Paris Arrondissement 11 apartment description

Pamper yourself in this spacious (771 sq ft /67 sq m), well-appointed, one bedroom apartment! It is located in a beautifully-preserved 19th century building in the historic Bastille neighborhood, close to the Marais, the Seine and the Canal St. Martin, in the up-and-coming 11th arrondissement.

THE APARTMENT
Our apartment is located on the second floor (third floor American), and after you climb up the recently renovated, broad stairwell, you’ll be met by our English-speaking manager. He will give you the keys, show you around your temporary home and demonstrate how to operate all appliances. If you have any problems during your stay, you can contact him.

(He will be fully available if anything comes up--but of course you are welcome to contact us if needed).

Our kitchen is to the left at the end of the short hallway. It is fully equipped with carefully chosen appliances and cooking utensils, and laid out with generous counter space. Just off the kitchen, the spacious, marble-walled bathroom reveals a level of luxury truly unique in a Paris apartment. There is a large shower as well a beautifully-large bathtub, just the thing for soaking those tired limbs after a vigorous day of sight-seeing. A heated towel rack keeps your towels cozy and warm for you after your bath or shower. A mirrored vanity with ample counter and storage space is spacious enough for more than one person to get ready in the morning. Also, you will also find tucked away here a top-of-the-line, full-sized Miele washer and dryer.

Next to the kitchen, the large dining room is just the place to enjoy what you brought home from the Richard Lenoir market, with elegant seating for four under an antique crystal chandelier. Original 19th century moldings are throughout the apartment, but note them particularly here above the chandelier. This room also features inlaid oak flooring, set in a herringbone pattern (point d' Hongrie in French).

Enjoy cozy seating in the salon or living room, which includes a red-wine colored velvet sofa facing its own marble fireplace and a comfy black leather club chair--above you will be another crystal chandelier. The comfortable sofa will fold out to provide a large bed with adequate space for two adults. You also have the ability to close off the living room and dining room if are using the sofabed, thus providing privacy and quiet for all guests.

Relax and watch mostly French TV (with some English channels) on a LCD television. Bring your laptop and enjoy free wifi. If you need to use the telephone, calls are free to the US, UK, continental Europe and Asia. This salon also features a newly added set of closets and desk, where a printer has been set-up for printing your boarding passes or Parisian itineraries.

The bedroom at the end of the hallway to the right features a marble fireplace as well as antique 19th century end tables that flank a custom, hand-made Treca mattress. The thick-paned, double-windows keep out street noise and the outside shutters can be closed if you need a totally dark and silent room for sleeping.

Finally, even what is usually the most ignored room in any Paris apartment has been given the luxury treatment: the W.C. is in marble, floor to ceiling.

LOCATION AND NEIGHBORHOOD
Our apartment is located in the historic Bastille neighborhood, just enough off the beaten tourist track to provide a calm respite, but still close enough to all those things that make this city indelibly Paris. Literally a block away is the incredible Richard Lenoir food market that no less an authority than David Lebovitz has pronounced one of the best in the city (don’t miss the rotisserie chickens and the incredible fresh fish stations). On the same esplanade where the market comes alive on Thursdays and Sundays can be found your local metro stop--the Breguet-Sabin station, a five-minute walk away.

But if you’ve slept in on market day and/or just need a few comestibles to tide you over, there is a new Carrefour City grocery store, conveniently situated literally around the corner. This store is a smaller version of the grand “hypermarché” chainstore found all over France but it still has fresh fruits, veggies, fish and meat, and carries an impressively sized and priced wine selection. If you want to comparison-shop your groceries and wine, there are two other grocery stories a few blocks away.

And if you don’t want to shop for groceries and would prefer a croissant, chausson de pomme or pain au chocolat to go with your morning coffee? Two blocks away is the Boulangerie Sedaine which our sweet tooth can personally vouch for, and in 2012 another boulangerie opened up even closer (Boulangerie Mardon). For more serious eating and drinking and just across from the boulangerie is the neighborhood favorite bar/restaurant, Café de l' Industrie, which takes up three corners of the intersection of rues Sedaine and Saint-Sabin.

Recently, the 11th arrondisement has become a mecca for what some have called 'the neo-bistro' movement: Restaurant Manger, which Kate Maxwell in CNNTraveler.Com called 'the best new restaurant in Paris' (June 4, 2013), is part of this scene and is only a five minute walk from the apartment.

But food and drink are certainly not the only attraction. Two blocks up is the famous pedestrian street Rue de la Roquette, which is a lively stroll past shops of every kind in the daytime and which features a vibrant, club/restaurant scene at night. Catch an opera or ballet at the the Bastille opera house, just ten minutes down Richard Lenoir boulevard. And for more leisurely strolls, go west to the Place des Vosges and Marais, or north to the Canal St. Martin. Or head south to the Seine and the Ile Saint Louis. All these Paris landmarks are reachable within an easy twenty minutes, with the Pere Lachaise cemetery and the famous Aligre market just a bit further away on foot. Of course, with the Breguet-Sabin metro station two blocks away and the Bastille metro station ten minutes away, you have a direct connection to the rest of Paris.

For my second trip to Paris, I couldn't think of anywhere I wanted to stay more that at this apartment. Just like my first visit, the apartment was a welcoming and inviting place to call home during my stay. Having a Metro stop just five minutes away is definitely convenient in the morning, but an even more appreciated after a long lay of sight seeing. With two markets near by as well as many restaurants, mealtime is not a problem. There are two newer restaurants that have opened since my visit last year and they seem quite popular and two doors down they were getting ready to open a new juice bar. As for the apartment, the full kitchen is great, the washer and dryer are something I could not do with out during an extended stay, and the sofa bed in the front room is the most comfortable bed of its type that I have ever slept in. If you want a place to call home during your stay in Paris, look no further.

We recently stayed in this apartment for 16 nights. Husband and two teenage children. It was just perfect for our needs. It was lovely having the two separate living areas - lounge and dining room, did not feel crowded at all. We ate in most evenings as it was so much fun going to the market at Richard Lenoir buying fresh produce, and on the days that market was not open going a little further afield to Marche d'Aligre. The kitchen was equipped so well. There was everything you could possibly need, baking dishes bowls, cooking equipment, made cooking very easy. The location was perfect within easy walking distance of many metro lines. The bathroom was fantastic, very roomy and was great having washing machine and dryer. Was very handy having the supermarket across the road which is open very long hours. Close a to a number of boulangeries and patisseries also, so could get fresh crosissants for breakfast very easily in morning. Was wonderful having access to the internet and being able to use the phone to ring (landlines) home on christmas day. Bruno met us at the apartment and he was so friendly and helpful showing us how to use everything. Cathy and Alan were so responsive to any questions we had. So all in all everything was perfect and I would highly recommend

Even with the high ratings, the apartment exceeded my expectations. I spent a week in the apartment with my mother. By Parisian standards, it is large and spacious (I have stayed in nice, but tiny places previously). The pullout bed was the most comfortable pullout I've ever experienced and it was in the family room with a door that can be closed to the hallway. This is really nice for parties using both sleeping areas, because people can use the bathroom, go to the kitchen, etc. without disturbing the person in the other area. The apartment location is fantastic--a couple streets away from the vibrant Bastille area, but not too close for nighttime noise. Bruno, the manager, was helpful, and the apartment was clean. We also found the owners' tips on local restaurants and sites to be very helpful. I highly recommend the place.

We recently had a 3 week stay in Paris, 2 weeks of which were spent in Cathy & Alan's apartment. It is very comfortable & well appointed & in an ideal central location. Even though Bastille is a vibrant & busy area, it is located in a quiet street & we were able to sleep every night with the windows open. There are many excellent restaurants within walking distance & all necessary conveniences are close by, including a good boulangerie only 50 metres down the street. Bruno, the apartment manager was very helpful, which made our arrival & departure very easy. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & highly recommend the apartment.

When this VRBO listing claims "Elegant, Luxurious Pied A Terre" it is certainly not an overstatement. In our experience all was as good if not better than advertised. This was our fifth trip to Paris and by far the best thanks in large part to the amenities of the apartment and its great location. Our favorite room--without doubt the bathroom. That is not to diminish any of the others--beautiful old fashioned chandeliers and wood floors etc. Also, anyone who loves to cook (or just eat well) will love the abundance and freshness of produce, fish, shellfish, cheese etc. available at the Bastille market just two blocks away. The Metro likewise just two blocks away. Many thanks for making our stay so enjoyable

This apartment is definitely as nice as advertised and in some ways more pleasant than expected. It was very clean, comfortable and well appointed. It was perfect for a two week stay with my teenage grandson. We each had privacy in our sleeping areas and enough space for music and quiet activities at the same time. We enjoyed cooking our meals and sitting down in the classic style apartment French dining room. The windows were easy to open for lots of sunlight and fresh air during the day and easy to close and cover for privacy and darkness at night. Cathy and Alan were helpful in answering questions. We would definitely recommend this apartment to friends. The only caution is that due to the season, 'fermeture annuelle', the August vacations, there were several businesses, including the closest bakery, that were closed. That said all the grocery stores, including a great health food store, and the famous marche Richard Lenoir, were open, easy to use and had friendly staff.

My wife and I recently spent a wonderful 9-day vacation in Paris. We loved the city, the neighborhood (Bastille), and Cathy and Alan's apartment. Most appreciated was the well equipped kitchen. We took advantage of the open air market and ate in most nights, and then splurged on a few extraordinary restaurants within walking distance. If I could give this review more that 5 stars, I certainly would!

This is our 8th visit to Paris and our 7th apartment rental. This apartment has been our very best experience, by far. The apartment is located in a typical Parisien neighbourhood away from the touristy sights but easily accessible to the Metro and many buses- another wonderful way to experience living in Paris. The apartment itself is beautifully renovatd with a very modern spacious kitchen, large bathroom with shower and soaker tub.Having a washer and dryer is one of our pre requisites when choosing an apartment- less clothes to pack on our trip! There is a separate toilet-a wonderful convenience! The size and the layout of the apartment is fantastic. If someone wants to have a nap or a sleep - in, the bedroom is situated away from the rest of the apartment and so, is very quiet.Having Dee the apartment manager meet us and show us how things worked was a bonus. She was most helpful The only caution I would add is that there are 30 steps to the apartment on the second floor. If you have any mobility issues , this may be a concern. Cathy and Alan were very helpful when making the booking and in providing wonderful tips and suggestions for the neighbourhood. It was a pleasure and an excellent experience for us. Thank you Cathy and Alan. We will return. PS Love the art work

For our first time in Paris, we wanted more than a stale hotel room, we wanted someplace that could feel like home, and this apartment did. Far enough away from the tourist areas that you can see real Parisiens going about their daily lives, but close enough so you are minutes away from the action. The nearest Metro station, the Bréguet-Sabin station on line 5 became our stop, and is literately five minutes from the apartment. When we arrived, we were met by the apartment manager, Dee and she was so delightful and helpful. The apartment building is beautiful and the apartment was clean and inviting. The pictures in the apartments listing were exactly what we found, though the side table in the bedroom now have lights, which was really nice. The fully equipped kitchen was wonderful to have, as were the washer and dryer. The beds were comfortable, there was nothing like falling into them after a hard day of sightseeing. The Carrefour City market, nearly across the street from the apartment, was a big help and we bought most of our groceries there. Around the corner there is an American Bar-B-Q restaurant that was very good and it was a nice way to ease ourselves into the world of Paris café/restaurant life. Communication with the owners went very smoothly and the information they sent us about the area was very helpful. We hope to return to Paris in the near future and would not think twice about returning to this apartment or recommending it to our friends and family. Thank you for everything.

We stayed at Cathy and Alan's Paris Apartment during the 2012 Winter Break. The apartment was lovely and we had a great time. My husband and I and our two boys ages 8 and 14 were very comfortable in the apartment, and the apartment was very clean with very nice furnishings. You will love the marble bath and the well equiped kitchen! Thanks to Cathy and Alan and to the apartment manager, Dee for making our trip to Paris so wonderful!

                      Year Purchased: 2010

About the owner: Some years ago, when our girls were younger, we spent a memorable year in France... in Aix-en-Provence. The girls became fluent in French. We made life-long friends. It was hard to leave. Finding this apartment in Paris was a way not to have to leave France for good. Alan and Cathy
