Delightful Garden Hideaway with Lovely Views Over the Bay

Sapodilla is a charming stone clad cottage situated in a two acre garden on a hillside overlooking Falmouth & English Harbours. The owner built the original house 42 years ago and Sapodilla is her guest cottage set below the pool in a very private part of the garden. The garden is filled with indigenous trees and flowers with many palms and several fish ponds. The palm fringed pool, set away from the main house offers calm and privacy and lovely views. The garden is filled with birds, especially the three varieties of hummingbirds busy working away at the many flowers.
There are wonderful hikes right out of the garden gate. Hiking to Rendezvous Bay is one of Antigua’s five star adventures – from Springhill, you are already en route, and coming home to plunge in the pool and rinse off the salt and grabbing a cold rum punch in your cottage – makes it even more special. The hike takes between 30 – 40 minutes to one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, where you are often the only people on the beach! You can hike further to Carlisle bay or Wallings Dam in the rainforest. The owner can organize guides for these longer hikes.
A top class equestrian centre started by the owner is 3 minutes walk down the hill. The centre offers BHS (British Horse society) instruction and trails around the pretty valley and wild beaches. If you like riding and your partner is a sailor (or would like to learn) this is the ideal spot to stay. The owners are very keen sailors, and would be pleased to help organize this.
It is possible to spend a holiday at Sapodilla without a car, but we would recommend renting one. English Harbour is 7 minutes drive away with all its historical sites, great bars and restaurants, and a stunning beach. There are two good supermarkets nearby. Having a car gives you the freedom to explore the many beautiful beaches, and other hidden treasures. The owners would be pleased to help you with any information.
Previous guests have all loved the peace and tranquility, and yet the nearness of all the life in English and Falmouth Harbours.

My wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary here in this very intimate cottage setting overlooking Falmouth Bay. We are both city-seasoned, fairly hyper individuals when tackling our hectic daily routines in Boston—routines that can sometimes foster “chippy” exchanges between even the happiest of couples. The fact that we were in each others close company 24 hours every day for eight days—and never once entertained an argument or a “cross word”—is the best testament I can give to the refreshing, invigorating and sunny tonic that this bucolic setting delivered. Waking up to gorgeous panoramic sunrise views over the bay by simply propping our heads on our pillows; hearing the sing-song greetings and quizzical looks from the bananaquits, bullfinches and hummingbirds perched on the sun-splashed porch rails; breakfasting with these beauties and perhaps a gecko or two as they courted our favor—each day began spot-on perfect! Factor in all the rest, the incredible beaches (Half Moon Bay!), some fave eating spots (Katherine's Cafe), rum punch and the easy-going, friendly nature of our very charming hosts and it spells a no-brainer for what an R&R Caribbean getaway should be. Thank you Janie and Geoffrey! We shall return. Gordon and KathyRecommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

My husband and I stayed for 2 weeks to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We could not have found a more perfect place. The cottage was just as described and in fact exceeded our high expectations. The landscaping and view of the harbor is not to be missed. The sunrise greeted us on the porch every morning and we were lucky enough to view the New Years Eve fireworks in the harbor from the porch as well. We enjoyed predinner cocktails at the pool/gazebo most evenings. The view of Falmouth Harbor is even better from this vantage point. We used this time to access the wi-fi on the property. We found the people of Antigua (especially Janie and Jeffrey) to be very friendly and welcoming. In fact, when going to nearby restaurants by Antigua Yacht Club, we were greeted with hugs by the staff. There is so much to see on the island from all the ruins and beaches. We could not have found a better place to stay and would like to return in the future with our family to share this piece of paradise!Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Dear Friends, Thank you so much for your lovely comments. We really enjoy having guests like you who appreciate our little bit of paradise. We would love to see you both here again. Janie and Geoffrey

My husband and I actually stayed at one of the fancy resorts for a few days before we came to the cottage. We both agree we enjoyed our time at the cottage MUCH more than the resort. Soooo beautiful!! Words cannot express how much we enjoyed our stay... but I will try: It's the perfect amount of privacy: you have your own private entrance, a private cottage and yet super close to the English Harbor with lots of restaurants and a nearby grocery store and liquor store. The gardening is so lush, colorful and welcoming. The pool and gazebo are a little piece of heaven. We read books in the comfy gazebo, enjoyed the view of the harbor and then hopped in the pool to cool off. The beach close by is a must! We enjoyed eating our breakfast on the patio, birds chirping, hummingbirds whizzing by, flowers in bloom. The location is great. English Harbour has GREAT restaurants and nightlife. It was so nice to have a kitchenette where we could make a quick dinner if needed, but mostly we enjoyed the fabulous restaurants nearby. We are so thankful for Janie and her cottage. Janie, it was a delight and privilege to meet you!!!! Thank you for your helpfulness, kindness and welcoming spirit. We truly enjoyed chatting with you both!!! I would also highly recommend using Titi car rental. Janie connected us with them. They were very kind and had great customer service: escorted us to the cottage, shuttled us to the airport, and were all around kind people. I would also highly recommend investing in good bug spray for anyone visiting Antigua. My husband and I brought and used an organic bugspray every day and only got a few mosquito bites. A few of the other couples we met in Antigua didn't heed this warning and were eaten up by the mosquitoes. Don't scrimp on the bug spray!! Other than that, Antigua is MUST visit!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you for such a wonderful review!!! We really enjoyed meeting you both, and I am so happy you enjoyed Sapodilla cottage. You were ideal guests, and I hope to see you again one day.

My husband and I went to Antigua in late September to celebrate his birthday and we stayed at Janie's cottage in Falmouth Harbour. I could not have imagined a more perfect place to stay. The cottage was so cute and Janie's garden is gorgeous. The cottage is very private and secluded, which gave it a secret romantic hideaway feeling. We were not far from both Falmouth Harbour and English Harbour, which was perfect for when we wanted to head out at night (although the island is quite small, so we had easy access to anywhere we wanted to go). And Janie herself is wonderful. She helped me out with all of my planning, for which I am so grateful as it was a surprise trip for my husband and I wanted everything to be just right. Not only does she have an amazing place to stay, but she was able to give me tips on where we could eat, hike, rent a car, etc. She helped to make our trip flawless. Thank you so much Janie!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

This cottage was the perfect place to stay for our honeymoon. The grounds, pool, and cottage were absolutly lovely...so much better than a hotel or condo. You must rent a vehicle so you're able to reach all of the beautiful beaches around the island. We recommend a sailing trip out of the nearby harbor. Rendevous Bay is a must, we were the only people on the beach all afternoon! Shirley's Heights is a beautiful look out. Grab a drink or dinner in Nelson's Dockyard. Half Moon Bay is another beautiful beach to visit, we walked around the point and discovered a resort on the other bay! Janie is a wonderful hostess and has lots of great suggestions for you. We highly recommend this cottage and hope to return some day! Catherine and PhilipRecommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: dear Philip & Catherine, It was a pleasure to have you stay, and hope perhaps to see you on an anniversary in the future. Many good wishes for your new life together, Janie

We have just returned from this idyllic hideaway where the peace and beauty of this lovely spot will always be remembered. The garden is lush and beautiful and one of the best moments of the day was early in the morning watching the numerous birds coming to drink the sugar water on the balcony. The pool was wonderfully refreshing and sitting in the shade of the gazebo with distant views over Falmouth harbour was the perfect place to relax. The cottage has everything you need and we enjoyed many lovely barbecues using fresh fish and local vegetables. We'd also recommend (in season) Catherine's Cafe on Antigua Slipway, English Harbour. Thank you Janie for being such a gracious host - we can't think of anywhere else we would want to stay in Antigua! We hope we'll have the chance to return one day. Highly recommended.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.
Owner response: Dear Caroline & Steve, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay, you were very easy guests, and we hope that you might come back one day for another visit. Kind regards, Janie

We just returned from a wonderful week at Janie's cottage, and would stay with her again should we return to Antigua. The cottage is cute, cozy, and kept quite clean. The doors and windows are never really closed, giving you the impression you are sleeping in the wilderness (the songs of crickets and frogs and birds are nearly constant). You have a small view of English Harbor from the porch, and we spent many hours sitting at table outside enjoying the sights and sounds and smells. The pool area is gorgeous and the gazebo is beautiful and comfortable, and you can access the WiFi from there. The pool itself has saltwater, and no chlorine. The location is a tad remote, and Janie has 4 dogs that help patrol her property, so you feel quite safe. There is an outdoor shower, but it's very private and it felt liberating bathing that way! The kitchen has a small electric cooktop appliance, as well as a microwave and a mini-fridge which came stocked with a few essentials like bread, butter, milk and eggs. There is a small barbecue and a bag of coals outside for your use as well, should you feel like grilling. Janie also kept various other necessities in the cottage for our use-- insect repellant (which I'm afraid I nearly used up), bug spray, and a large bottle of rum! Janie was a lovely hostess, and we enjoyed chatting with her and getting recommendations on restaurants and beaches (which ended up being great!). Her library is extensive, and so is her wonderful hospitality! Some things to be aware of: you WILL want a jeep or another all-terrain type vehicle. The road to and from the house is fraught with deep potholes (this time of year). Also, if your blood normally attracts mosquitos, be prepared! not even the mosquito netting will keep you safe from the pests (i was told not everyone has this problem, but we left with MANY bites despite the use of DEET spray). Also, one of Janie's dogs is a puppy, and while all are friendly, this one had a propensity for stealing some of my *personal* things and leaving them on the lawn for Janie to later find. Keep your shoes and clothes in the chest of drawers or the closed closet when you are not at home! All in all we had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend the cottage to friends.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

Wonderful memory We went to antigua to see my son and his friend finish their row across the atlantic. We stayed in Janie's cottage which was in a beautiful quiet spot in her garden. It had fantastic views over Falmouth Harbour and glorious flowers in the garden. It was a delightful little studio cottage with everything you needed all in a small space with a super patio to sit out on to enjoy the view and sunshine. 10 mins drive from Falmouth/English harbour - a perfect spot with a wonderful, friendly caring cottage ownerDid you find this review helpful?
