It is a special feeling to be able to step out onto the front porch and hear nothing but the wind through the trees or a ground squirrel chirping in the distance or the quail talking to each other as they go about their day. That is the experience you will have when you visit our ranch. You will feel as if you have stepped back in time to a way of life that was prevalent 150 years ago. We are surrounded by majestic oak trees, tall digger pines and acres of rolling hills and pastureland. We have a river that runs through the property during the rainy season (Nov. - March) that makes things especially beautiful. Wildlife is plentiful ! You may see a coyote, hawk, fox, bear or deer. Occasionally even a Tule elk wanders through the place. You may want to hike .... we have easy to more difficult hiking , you may want to bring a bike or you may just want to sit and read a book . It is entirely up to you!
If you want to do a little sight seeing...we have that too. Santa Margarita is only 24 miles west and there you will find 4 eating places, 2 wine tasting rooms and a feed store ! 10 minutes to the south of Santa Margarita is San Luis Obispo. This city was recently named 'the happiest place in the USA' by The New York Times best-seller 'Thrive'. They have shopping, eateries, movies and a mission. 10 minutes to the north of Santa Margarita is Atascadero. This is a small, quiet community with eateries, a movie theater and groceries. They also offer Atascadero Lake with a large picnic area and a zoo. Templeton is just north of Atascadero .Templeton has many wineries and wine tasting rooms. Maybe you want to go to the ocean. We have that too ! Morro Bay is about 1 hour away. There you will find shopping and lots of scrumptious fish and chips !
If you would like to go fishing we have a small lake on the property which has catfish, bass and crappie. If you are looking for something larger then Santa Margarita Lake is only 10 miles from your accommodations and it has boat rental, fishing and picnicking.
Your house, which we call 'The Bunkhouse' has been completely refurbished and done with a western motif. There are 2 bedrooms. One bedroom has a queen-size bed and the other bedroom has 2 twin beds. The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher , oven/stove and coffee maker. It has pots and pans for you to prepare your favorite meal. The living room has 2 love seats and a gas fireplace. A TV with DVD player is at your disposal along with a complete DVD catalog for you to choose your favorite movie. The bathroom is a shower/tub combination. The cupboards and shelves in the kitchen and bathroom are made from hand-planed wood.
Please email us with any question that you might have. We look forward to meeting you !

My husband and I had a wonderfully serene weekend at the bunkhouse. The location of the cabin is remote and all you hear are sound of nature. The kitchen was very well equipped, stocked not only with all kinds of cooking gear and dishes but also with lovely homemade bread and cookies and a welcoming bottle of wine. Our horses were quite happy with their accommodations, a nice size corral with a covered shelter. There was endless riding to be done out on the Shinn ranch and the national forest with plenty of wildlife spotting. For us, this was the perfect combination of getting away for some private time, doing lots of riding and coming back to a glass of wine and a nice bath. Thank you to our wonderful hosts, Dot and Alan!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

Came for a wedding in Santa Margarita and were lucky enough to stay at Dot and Alan's blissful retreat. They have thought of every amenity one could want but, the best part, is the total, amazing peace and quiet. Glad we brought our own provisions as cafe/market is a long drive. Hosts provided dozen eggs, homemade bread and cookies and a bottle of wine! No cell phone or internet reception for miles around. We walked, hiked, stargazed, slept late and marveled at the amount and variety of wildlife we were able to see. Don't book this place if you can't be without TV, etc. Do book this place as one of the most beautiful, quiet retreats on the central coast. Super clean, just lovely.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Very sad day for us to leave this wonderful house, ranch area and the Shinn family. Our kids loved it ! No electronics and no requests for DVD's. Plus my 7 year old cleared her plate at every dinner and said she did so as the food tasted better here! The Shinn's have their own little piece of paradise here and we are very grateful they shared it with us. Never truly appreciated the quiet ...and the dark!...until now!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful and serene ranch house. This was such a great getaway, a truly unique and special place away from it all. We very much enjoyed all the special treats and your warm and wonderful hospitality. You are right, this is not Disneyland, yet we are having difficulty prying our 4 year old away from this ranch!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My sister from New York City and I wanted to get away for a few days to reconnec. Our stay at the Shinn's wonderful " bunkhouse" was two of the most wonderful quiet and peaceful days we have had in a long time. The house, charming and accurately described and shown in the photos, is beautifully maintained; set in 300 acres of California grass- land dotted with oaks, pines and huge sycamores along the river bed( dry in the summer). We loved the openness of the land and the friendliness of Dot and Alan who greeted us with scrumptious goodies. They were on the spot if we had any concerns and knew so much about this land from its ecology and history to where to go and what to do. As two women solo we felt really safe and so peaceful. It was the perfect place for us took walks and sat on the porch and watched the quail and the cows while we reconnected. We loved all the birds, the deep beautiful quiet, the crickets who serenaded us and the night sky brilliant with stars. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, this is truly an wonderful place to be.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

My husband and I live in Northern California and wanted to get away from the big city and stay somewhere quiet, peaceful and away from everything. This place definitely provided just that. It's out in the middle of nowhere, just where we needed to be for some real R&R. Once you go inside this little bunkhouse, you will immeditely feel the comforts of home far away from home. We LOVED the western style of the place with all the amenities one could possibly need. We had such a quiet and relaxing stay and the owners are wonderful people. We recommend this vacation rental to those who just need to escape from the fast life into a world of beauty, real nature and tranquility.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1965
About the owner: The Shinn family has lived here since 1965. The ranch was purchased in order for Mom and Pop Shinn to move their children out of the city. All the children have grown up and moved on except for Alan. Alan is the ramrod of the ranch. He keeps the small cattle operation going while Dot works behind the scenes. We enjoy our lifestyle out in the country so much! The night sky is so full of bright, beautiful stars! The wildlife that we get to see on a daily basis are just awesome! We have chickens that lay fresh eggs everyday . We feel blessed that we are fortunate enough to live in God's country and want to be able to share this small piece of the earth with others. Along with the chickens, we have 2 dogs, several head of cattle, 2 horses and 5 cats. Oh, and several guinea pigs left here when our daughter moved out ! Come see and enjoy this unspoiled part of California!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
We are surrounded by open spaces ! We have no visible neighbors...our closest neighbor is 2 miles away. We are bordered on 3 sides by large ranches and on the fourth side by National Forest . We have a unique location in that we sit at the end of a one - lane county road. There is very little traffic . We believe that our biggest asset is the quietness. That may not sound like a big deal but if you stop whatever you are doing right now and listen... what do you hear? Probably the sounds of traffic , sirens or people talking. We have no noise out here except the sounds of nature ! The night sky is beautiful .... so full of stars and the sunrises and sunsets can be spectacular!
We encourage you to come try a way of life that has all but disappeared.
