The Potter's Guesthouse
6211 Michillinda at Lamos Road
Whitehall, MI 49461
South of town 'in the country'
The Potter’s Guesthouse is located on the property of Terrestrial Forming Pottery Studio where Peter 'the Potter' Johnson has been creating art for over forty years.
The clean and comfortable, newly renovated two-story is a former 1800’s school house that was moved to this location in the early 1900's and joined to a farm house.
There are three fully furnished bedrooms, two up and one down; one full bath down and another up; a large fully equipped kitchen; a spacious living room; a breezeway with washer and dryer; and a deck with a charcoal grill. It will sleep six: one queen, one double, two twins, all with quality mattresses. Linens are included as well as cable TV, internet, microwave, and dishwasher, all the comforts of a home away from home.
There are acres of land to picnic or to take walks in the adjacent woods which lead you to Lake Michigan's white, sandy beaches and dunes. For a nominal fee, you can arrange time with the potter to work in the studio with clay.
This beautiful area of west Michigan has much to offer. Lake Michigan (Duck Lake State Park), White Lake, and Duck Lake are all less than one mile away. In addition, we are close to Michigan’s Adventure Park, bike trails (The Hart-Montague rails-to-trails paved path is now over 25 miles long.), White Lake Light Station (great walk from lighthouse to beach via the channel), art galleries, unique shops, a book store, yoga studio, candy shop, boating and fishing (free launch sites), canoeing, kayaking, dune rides, hiking and bird watching (Owassippi), free weekly outdoor concerts, numerous golf courses, antique stores, Howmet Theater, 1950's root beer drive-in, the state's oldest soda fountain, and the world's largest weathervane. (Or just relax under the shady maples or the millions of stars.)
It's a paradise!
We rent by the week with a refundable security deposit of $500 due at time of reservation. Check-in is Saturday at 3; check- out is Saturday at 11. Available June through October.

We had a wonderful stay at this house! It is in a great location; there are trees surrounding the whole area, it is private and very quiet, and it is close to lakes and town but also far away enough that you're not in the middle of tourists or the hussle and bussle of a town. Everything that you could possibly need would be there and more! The homeowners are available if ever you need anything and are incredibly friendly. Peter's pottery studio is fascinating, plus he's likely to tell you a fan story or two and take you around the shop is very enjoyable. This house is very comfortable, clean, and definitely top notch. We would love to come back!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the Potter's Guesthouse. We found the facilities to be as shown and described in the listing. In addition to the excellent facilities we found the overall location and neighborhood fine for a family retreat. We had our two sons and thei4r families with us for various times. This included a six year old and a 20mo. year old. The facility was most appropriate for our group even with the two little persons. The back deck and outdoor grill got lots of use and found it most pleasant in the evening. I would suggest that groceries in quantity be purchased at Plumb's in Whitehall. Fill ins can be purchased nearby at the Duck Inn (high priced but good selection, ice cream, etc.). Also newspapers available. If planning to stay for any time and using Duck Lake State Park and from out of state would recommend getting annual park pass rather than paying daily rate. Can also park by side of Scenic drive but often quite busy in Summer. Pottery Shop most interesting and owners are unobtrusive and most halpful for any questions. Some places to eat out at night are Crosswinds on the lake in Whitehalll (good selection, service, and view at marina), Michilinda Inn up the street for more "formal" evening out, and the Lakeside Inn to the end of the road and to the lake. Nearby Michigan Adventure Park for kids and certainly the beach at Duck Lake and Lake Michigan make for great relaxing times. Our family from Mozambique and those from Atlanta enjoyed thei4r stay. Having been born in Michigan and in business their for many y3ears we were familiar with the area. Having traveled extensivly and worked in Europe for 21 years we have used Home Away on numerous occasions. This description and the pictures are most descriptive of what you will find. The property was as represented and most comfortable. You will need a car as sights and facilities are not within walking distance. I would highly recommend it. We will certainly consider it if and when returning to the area.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

We stayed for a week with our two children and enjoyed our much needed vacation so much. We biked, took walks in the woods, swam in Lake Michigan (great waves!), ran around the dunes, had fires in the back yard, and ate dinner on the deck. And so much more! When it rained, we took Scenic Drive along the lake to Muskegon and enjoyed the museum there. And we hung out in the spacious, clean, and tastefully decorated house. The photos and description of Potter's Cottage are absolutely accurate. The place had everything we could have asked for, it's private and wonderfully located (on the edge of the State Park), and the owners are lovely people, welcoming, accommodating, and very generous. We will definitely come back. Thank you for a wonderful time.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Our family rented the house for a week, and loved every minute of it. The quiet grounds peeked out of a clearing in the forest. And all around were Peter the Potter's unique glazed one-of-a-kind pottery. It is a 15 - 20 minute walk to White Lake and the State Park. Clear water with wonderful sand ripples at the bottom. Lots of sight seeing in Whitehall and the towns about the area. And the sane dunes are amazing. Peter and Jan are great hosts. The house was quite charming and wonderfully clean. We were even able to have a bonfire at night and sing camp songs!! We all recommend this charming house and their owners to anyone. Enjoy!Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, sightseeing, families with young children.

My stay at the guesthouse was a wonderful experience. The house was neat, comfortable, and well-maintained (loved that handmade tile floor!). The desk out back was a special place, as was the sun-flooded kitchen. Since I love Duck Lake for its privacy and simplicity, the proximity of the guesthouse could not be better. There are bicycles available for use, and the area is perfect for riding (especially for a twilight ice cream treat at the White Duck). I really enjoyed the pottery studio and the outdoor "museum"- the pieces are beautiful, useful and really do seem to spring from the earth. Without a doubt, I will be back.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway, families with young children.

What a great cottage --well appointed, spacious, organized, and clean. The kitchen in particular is absolutely lovely--lots of light. The cottage is located within easy bike or short car ride to Lake Michigan and Duck Lake, as well as to fun things to do in Whitehall and Montague. The owners and caretaker are very warm and friendly, and very responsive if you need anything. If you want a relaxing vacation at a reasonable price, this is a great place.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children.

The Potter's guesthouse is exactly as described. We were pleasantly surprised with the size of the rooms and amenities in this home. There was plenty of room for tents for the kids. The house is located between White Lake and Lake Michigan/Duck Lake. We enjoyed the the channel at Duck Lake on the days Lake Michigan was a bit too cool, plus Duck Lake is shallow making it great for the little ones. Michillinda Rd has a bike path for walkers, runners and bikers and leads to nearby bike paths. The walk to the beach is through the woods and very enjoyable. Our favorite ice cream store was located in Montague, I believe it was called Twisters. Good prices large scoops :). Also the Java Book Store in Montague is very quaint. Only 6 minutes to Michigan Adventure. What more could you want?Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, girls getaway, families with young children.

This is a great place to stay. The house is comfortable, with plenty of room and then some! The kids liked it better than home. Jan, Peter and Russ are incredibly welcoming and helpful. The location is tucked away but close to the beach so you can hang out in the quiet woods or head down to play on the beach. Definitely go play with clay at the pottery studio! It's a great experience and Peter is an amazing teacher. Montegue is a cute little town to explore. We loved staying here - hope you do too!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children.

This is a beautifully renovated, newly remodeled cottage, clean and really could sleep more than 6. Although it is more like a house than a cottage! Very close to Lake Michigan, state parks, bike trails, White Lake, and Duck Lake. Great place to rent if you want a good rate, don't need to be right on the water, and like to deal with wonderful hosts! I recommended this cottage to my Mother-in-law for her summer vacation, and she rented it for two weeks and was happy with her time spent there. Thanks to owners, Peter and Jan!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children.
