Shenandoah Sweetwater Vacation Cottage

Sweetwater Vacation Properties consist of a Cottage situated on 6 secluded acres along the scenic Shennandoah River. The property is located approximately 10 miles down river (North) of Luray, VA (vicinity Mile 12) and offers excellent ultra-lite and fly-fishing for Small Mouth Bass, Brim, Red Eye Bass as well as baiting for old standbys like catfish and carp. Two canoes are included with the cottage rental. There are numerous scenic hiking and riding trails throughout the area and over 20 miles of canoeing water with public access that allows you to get close to all sorts of wildlife. If you are into plants and trees, there are a wide variety of both in the area. I also recommend a good book and a pair of binoculars for bird watching (Baltimore Orioles are nesting along the river in spring and early summer) or curl up by the campfire or laze int the hammock with that favorite novel you have been meaning to read. In any case, you will wind down to the speed of the river - slow and easy.
The Cottage has a full kitchen with dishes, silverware, pots and pans and a gourmet waffle iron; a full bath, and single bedroom, small dining/living room, picnic tables, fire pit, gas grill, and large screened-in side porch. Sleeping arrangements in the cottage includes a queen bed and two double futon beds in the living room. You will need to bring, your own linen, blankets or sleeping bags, towels, pillow with case, food and beverages.

We always look forward to vacationing at the cabin each summer! Being a short drive from the hustle and bustle of DC, we enjoy the serenity and beautiful surroundings of this property! The Shenandoah is literally at the doorstep of the cabin and provides numerous hours of relaxation and fun! Our fondest memories of the cabin are swimming and tubing in the river with friends and family, canoe-ing and kayaking, and even napping in the hammock with gorgeous views of the mountains – ultimate relaxation! Nights are spent hanging by the fire with s’mores and the stars. After the perfect weekend, we typically head into town to Buck’s for some great breakfast and head back home. We love coming to this location and look forward to many more visits!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Jan and I are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Sweetwater. The short distance from Northern Virginia makes Sweetwater a very economical destination; easy on travel time and gas. Laying out in the yard a night on a blanket and watching the beautiful stars is one of our favorite things to do. They seem so close when you are at the river. We look forward to your return this summer! Jan and John

My wife and I have had the pleasure of staying at the Sweetwater Cottage on a several occasions, and every time has been an absolute blast! The cottage has everything you need for a relaxing getaway, and it sits at an ideal spot on the river. The views are incredible, and there are so many fun activities at your disposal: canoeing, tubing, fishing, swimming, open spaces for games....the possibilities are endless. Of course if you'd just rather relax & take in the beautiful surroundings, there's ample opportunity for that too. We look forward to visiting Sweetwater every year, it's the highlight of our summer!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, people with disabilities, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Jason: So glad you have enjoyed your stays at Sweetwater. Sounds like the place accomplished our mission and that is to make each stay as memorable as possible. We love hosting you, your family and your K9 buddy at our little "Peace of Heaven". We look forward to having you back again soon Blessings - Jan and John

I come to the Cabin every summer and have been for the past 10 years or so. It's the summer getaway that I really feel like I'm away from the cares of the world and the hectic pace of city life. It has truly been the place I come to recharge my spirit with amazing scenery, the company of good friends, and a property that has become so much a part of my life that it feels like my home away from home. It's so refreshing to be able to walk right out in the river straight from the cabin and swim, fly-fish, tie-off an inflatable raft and float, or kayak/canoe for several miles and watch bald eagles and the like grace you with their presence. The property is in pristine condition and there's a massive amount of land to stretch out and enjoy. My border collie is exhausted by the time we leave and from all the running around and that's a difficult thing to do living in the city. He loves it just as much as I do. I extend an enormous thanks and toast of appreciation to the owners for creating such a magnificent getaway and I will continue to come here for many more years. I hope everyone out there looking for a serene escape finds this place and can experience the love I have for the Cabin!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Our appreciation for such a glowing assessment! As the owners of such a small little family business, out objective is to provide everyone who comes to Sweetwater with an opportunity to make memories that will last a lift time. We don't look at people who come to Sweetwater as customers as much as will look at them as "family". The Lord was so gracious to entrust us with the stewardship of this little piece of heaven right "gob smack" in the middle of a beautiful valley created by His hand. We feel it is our obligation to do our best to bless others as we have been so blessed. We love to see people enjoying themselves (along with their children, family and K9s) at Sweetwater and looking forward to showing you a continued good time as part of the future Sweetwater family. Blessing and love to all - Jan and John

Sweetwater offered our family a much needed escape from everyday life! We used the hammock and swing everyday, and also took the canoe out on the river a couple times. We fished each day (brought our own fishing gear) along the river bank. Also played baseball in the big yard- great times! The house is perfect- it's small and right on the river. There was a full moon during our visit and it was exceptionally beautiful looking out on the river at night. We used the raised fire pit to cook dinner one night, and of course smores! The home owners have a small but neat collection of DVDs, they have streaming Netflix, and high speed internet. We really enjoyed looking through their books as well, particularly the fishing and cooking books. Their location is perfect- a scenic 25 minute drive into Luray, where the Caverns and a really neat rescue zoo are located. Several grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations in town. We highly recommend Sweetwater, and can't wait to get back in the warmer weather!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: We are so glad that you had the kind of family getaway that you were hoping for. The fishing is what attracted us in the first place but the water was still a bit cold for you and prime time is usually late April and May. That said you can really get a good bonfire burning to enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful stars at night. Just having each other with no distractions makes for a good time. We are glad you plan to return.

What a great weekend with friends and family! If you want to experience the best Virginia has to offer, spend a few days at the Cottage. It truly is a beautiful place! There is plenty to do if you want to keep busy(kayaking, fishing, etc.) or you can simply relax in the shade and enjoy the sounds of nature. I hope to visit again sometime soon!!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thanks for your response. I am never at a loss for something to do at the cottage; all if it good. We have a saying that "a bad day at the cottage is better than a good day at work". I have yet to find a bad day at the cottage. We look forward to hosting you and your group again very soon! Blessings and warm regards to all!

My husband, dog, and I stayed here for a week during record-breaking heat in the region, and we didn't notice. The river was cool, and the cottage was air-conditioned. My husband said it was the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. The cottage is very well-equipped, the location is beautiful, and Jan was more than helpful. We look forward to our next visit!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: I know what you mean by the temperature, it seems 10 degrees cooler than at home and the breeze by the water is wonderful. The cottage is down river from the other cabins in the area giving it a secluded private feel to it. There is a good stand of trees between the main travel road and ours so there is no dust to disturb the atmosphere of the property. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay, we hope to have you down again soon, thank you for your kind words, Jan

This place is amazing! Beautiful location for relaxation or even some friendly competition. We enjoy canoeing, hiking, roasting S'mores, horse shoes, and so much more! The view from the river bank is spectacular and the air conditioing/fire place make it comfortable for all seasons! My husband likes to grill on the firepit but the gas grill is always a nice back up plan! Sweetwater is great if you're a veteran to the outdoors or if this is your first experience with nature.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank-you for a most gracious review. Lots of good family outdoor games to play that instill a good sense of family bonding and friendly competition. The outdoor cooking and grilling facilities are enough for any guy to "get back to the basics" and check a major block on "the man card". We have cooked as much as 20 lbs of chicken on the firepit at one time. So glad you liked it and looking forward to showing you a good time on your return!!

We have stayed in the cottage the last two years, and plan on going back this summer. We have a wonderful time, you are right on the river. You can float down on a tube, or kayak, or just sit in the river on a lawn chair. The cottage itself is very comfortable, with a full kitchen. The screened porch is great for dining, or just relaxing.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.

My boys and I, LOVE LOVE going to this cottage. We have gone two years in a row and plan on going again this year. Its awesome to be right on the river. It allows them to be able to fish first thing in the morning while I sit back and enjoy the view...I recommend this to everyone that I know!!!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: So glad you had such a wonderful time at the cottage!! It is a good place for kids, especially the one's that have a little "Tom Sawyer" in them. They have the freedom to explore, fish and snorkel the river and experience things they can't do in a classroom or in front of a "Game Boy". Also a good place for Mom to sit under the shade on the bank, read her book and watch the kids enjoy themselves.

We've been down camping on the property which has full electric, sewer an water hookup. Most wonderful place to camp and the most peaceful. I love listening to the river and the geeze on the river. We did have access to the cabin which has everything you need. They also have tubes and canoes which we got to use and had a wonerful time. Very relaxing whether you are just tubing or canoeing. My son loves it down there and loves also just swimming on the bank near the house. So many places we go camping there is just so much noise and so commercialized. Down there it's just back to nature and closer to God. Love sitting by the firepit at night cooking smores. I love this place and would come down every year. Jeanie & Ed BoggRecommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, people with disabilities, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thanks for a wonderful review and so glad you enjoyed your stay. Love having the whole family (Moms, Dads, Kids and Dogs) enjoying the freedom and relaxing atmosphere that Sweetwater has to offer. This is a great place to bring Fido and let him (or her) just have fun being a dog. It is a place where the dog and the kids can make wonderful memories together play near/in the river. You are correct that this place does not have all the entertainment (and the crowds) that are associated with the more commercial camp grounds and is more back to the basics/no frills, but it also offers what a lot of other places don't offer - peace and tranquility and being a part of the wonderful Shenandoah river. So glad you had a good time and i hope you return to continue making good memories. Jan and John

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1995
About the owner: Married in Washburn, WI, in 1974 and traveled to many different places while in the Army settling in Remington, VA (2004) with Bear (half lab and golden) Daisy (Pound Puppy) and Tigger the “Kat”! Jan is a highly successful domestic engineer and mother of Tim and Casey. John retired from the Army in 1995 and is still serving at PEO Soldier, Ft. Belvoir, VA. Jan and John enjoy fishing in both fresh and saltwater, being with our kids, and being of service to our Lord and Savior.
Why the Owner Chose Luray:
This place was love at first sight! We originally purchased it as a private retreat, but found that being able to show others what a relaxing time was all about was extremely gratifying and decided to start sharing it with others . Life here moves at the speed of the river - very slowly!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Love sitting out along the river bank on a cool spring morning listening to the songs of the Baltimore Orioles or the owls hooting on a warm summer night while sleeping on the screened in porch. The peace and tranquility of floating down the river on a warm summers day while laying on an air mattress with my face submerged under water with mask and snorkel watching the river bottom and all the associated critters pass by. Or the joy of a “gourmet” smore cooked to perfection over a campfire with friends and family. Being rewarded with a nice bass as a result of a not so perfect cast. Finally, marveling at all of the wonders that surround you and appreciating the beauty of God's creativity!
