Flirting With Disaster
Flirting With Disaster
We booked 5 nights at the Lake Front Cabin in early August. When we arrived late on a Monday afternoon, after a long drive, we were excited. The cabin is in a lovely, secluded spot on Vallecito Lake. Although the reservoir water was down to an alarmingly low level -- so low that the cabin can hardly be described as "lakefront" any longer -- the owner had warned us in advance and we were prepared for it. However, we were not prepared for the second cabin under construction adjacent to ours (not pictured in the photos). Although there was nobody there when we arrived, the site was littered with sawdust and power tools, leading us to worry that the peaceful stillness would soon be shattered by a screaming buzz saw. We explored the surroundings, finding an odd assortment of stuff scattered about, including a broken arcade game ("Frogger"), a non-working fire pit, and a couple of gas grills that have definitely seen better days. But the cabin itself was charming (from the outside). Undeterred, we went in. Things went quickly downhill. My 10-year-old son wrinkled his nose and said, "It smells funny in here." It did. The cabin was chock full of knick-knacks and curios, and there was a dusty, musty odor permeating every room. My wife inspected the kitchen and pronounced it too dirty to cook in. The bathroom was no better -- not the level of cleanliness one expects at this price level. Thanks to the dust, my allergies went into overdrive and I began what would become a non-stop sneeze-fest. As it was getting late, and we had come such a long way, we decided to stay the night. My wife cooked outside on the grill to avoid using the kitchen. As the sky darkened, we discovered that the owner was something of a tinkerer. There were many electrical "improvements" around the place, with lights everywhere. Unfortunately, many of them did not work. Yes, there are five TVs, but we could only get two of them to work, and we only found one remote. The WiFi network password didn't work, either. The next morning, after a dismal shower in the tiny shower stall, I declared our cabin experience over. We packed up and left. I emailed the owner, and left a phone message, to tell her we were leaving. We didn't hear back for two days. In the meantime, we found a much nicer, larger and cleaner place on a lake in Pagosa Springs for 2/3 the price. We had to eat the cost of the 4 nights we didn't stay in the cabin, but in the end it was worth it. Our vacation was saved.

Secluded Lake Cabin
Secluded Lake Cabin
We are an active senior couple, looking to escape Albuquerque heat and explore southern Colorado. The lakeside location and amenities were most attractive. We found the cabin clean and as described .Due to the ongoing drought, the lake level has dropped but still provides excellent kayaking and fishing. The owner disclosed this prior to rental. There was very little traffic on the lake during the week and we had the place to ourselves. The cabin is exactly adjacent to a National Forest campground, but is mostly enclosed by trees and shrubbery. It was quiet during our stay, though you are aware of nearby campsites. The hot tub was a treat - water was crystal clear. We took our own food as we like to cook. Great restaurants in Durango (18 mi the back way) and enough supplies at the local stores for odds and ends. We did not try the Schank House, although it was recommended. We highly recommend the drive on the San Juan Skyway north, through the southern Rockies, and various mining towns It is quite spectacular. Owners provided contact #'s and the rental confirmation and stay went very smoothly. We would recommend this property as a quiet getaway, with access to great outdoor activities and scenery.

Search no more, this place is the best you'll find in Lake Vallecito! (And I did my homework with days of searching websites.) The location is ideal for a quiet remote getaway, but still only a 1/2 hour drive to Durango. We loved having a private beach just steps away and the hot tub was a plus on those chilly mountain evenings. The views are breathtaking and the outdoor space has tons of seating so you can enjoy the lake from several areas in the yard. The bed and furnishings were all very comfortable with lots of outdoor seating to enjoy the views. The owners were extra accomodating and attentive to our needs. They have furnished their cabin with all the amenities you need plus lots of cool extras - a heated, bidet toilet seat, TV's in every room, paddleboat, grill, gas firepits, etc. Be sure to visit Ska Brewery in Durango - free tours at 4 PM (We are big fans)! Also take a drive out to Mesa Verde and up to Silverton (or ride the train.) Lots of fun things to do in this area for families. Wish we could have stayed longer!

The cabin was cozy and stocked with the necessities. The property was just incredible! Privacy, views and perfect weather. We even met the owner and ended up inviting him to stay for dinner. Great vacation, great place to unwind - we will be back.

The views from this cabin are exceptional and the trees on the property are amazing. The cabin is small, but the outside living areas, decks, etc are large and private so it makes everything seem more spacious. Loved the friendly Chipmunks :) and would stay here again in the future.

About the owner: Hi My name is Connie If you have any Questions, please do not hesitate to call me.
Why the Owner Chose Vallecito Lake:
After camping around Lake Vallecito for many years, and staring at this historical cabin next to Graham Creek Campground. I knew that place could be my heaven here on earth. Back when it was just a bunk house for the ranch hands working the cattle ranch where Lake Vallecito exists today. In the years that followed rooms were added, including a kitchen. You can still look around and see some original walls and décor. The property is a half-acre however completely surround by BLM and National Forests . The most spectecular view of the Needle Mountains and the Lake.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
A good friend of ours owns and operates the ONLY Marina on Lake Vallecito. His name is Stan and mention your staying at Connie's and Brad's cabin and he'll give you a 20% discount on a boat rental.
