Location: Trastevere, Rome, Latium (Lazio), Italy, Europe (Best part of TRASTEVERE - minutes walk to all major sights)

Accommodations:  Flat/Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)

IN A NUTSHELL: There may be less expensive properties available but probably few that can rival the decor and ambiance of this jewel of a Roman abode. Never conceived to be a rental, this is the actual very-lived in home of an American ex-patriot art collector and world traveler. It is decorated with sheer luxury - marble floors and Venetian stucco - and decorated with the finest high-design furnishings and museum-quality art and antiques. Suitable for celebrating a special occasion or a very memorable holiday in which IT DOES MATTER where you lay your weary head, this home will certainly form a major highlight of the more discriminating traveler's journey.

LOCATION: The apartment is located on one of the most charming streets of the Artist's Quarter of TRASTEVERE. The major thoroughfare of the district, Viale Trastevere, is just 200 yards away. Along this road run major bus and tram lines connecting to all points of the city. The most colorful fruit and vegetable market of the district lies just a couple of yards from the front door. The heart of the Quarter - Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is one minute's walk away.

The important historical sites of Trastevere are all within a five-minute walk including the Bernini masterpiece of Beata Ludovica Albertoni in the Church of San Francesco a Ripa, Bramante's magnificent Renaissance chapel in San Pietro in Montorio, the frescoes of Raffaello in the Villa Farnese and the panoramic lookout point of the Janiculum Hill.

In the immediate vicinity there are pharmacies, convenience shops, banks, English-language cinemas and an American-style grocery. The nearest hospital is just 800 yards away. The best nightlife of the city is concentrated in the immediate vicinity including world-famous restaurants like Sabbatini, Galeassi, and Da Meo Pattaca.

THE BUILDING: Constructed in 1797 as part of Napoleon's first public works project in the city, this palazzo was created as one of the very first condominiums designated for the local populace under the French administration in what was then known as VIA VERDIRAME - a thoroughfare dating to Roman times.

Today's population is an interesting mix of locals and permanent foreign residents of the city involved in the arts and design. The inner courtyard and main facade - as well as the public foyers and stairwells - have all undergone a recent renovation and are in pristine state. The facade is in Neo-Classical style and the building is listed as a national historical monument.

THE APARTMENT: Located, with easy access, on the second floor of a very quiet interior courtyard, the apartment is a very spacious, 950 square feet and consists of one bedroom, sitting room, full kitchen, studio, bathroom, and balcony terrace. There is ample closet space. Furnishings are of the very highest quality including rare antiques and an impressive painting collection.

    • I recently stayed in this apartment. Very comfortable and incredibly convenient to all the major attractions. Public transportation just a short distance from the door but more importantly a wonderful neighborhood that gives one the feeling of being a true Roman. I recommend it highly.

    • If you want location and tasteful surroundings, this is it! My family (husband, two children, and myself)stayed here in July of 2006 for 9 nights. It was an ideal place to be during the hot and crowded month of July. We ventured out on foot across the river to Rome's main sights by day and very happily retreated to our Trastevere apartment at night. Trastevere's restaurants and nightlife (highly recommend evening walks along the river) were highlights of our trip. The apartment is peaceful, chicly decorated, and easily accessible to all - cafes, markets, transport. There's even a hospital emergency room around the corner. My only caution: the air conditioning in the bedroom is rather weak; we just turned it off and used a fan -- and had no trouble sleeping. We were very happy with this apartment and its courteous, communicative owners.

    • The Trastevere Apt. was a terrific! We stayed for 9 days in Dec.2004 - Jan.2005. New Year's Eve in Rome was exquisite! Buon Ano! The place was comfortable and secure. We spent many an evening there drinking wine, playing cards, and listening to C.D.s. We cooked most of our breakfasts and Dinners there. Sleeping arrangements were quite comfortable. I was in the bedroom, my 20 year old daughter and her friend(s) were on the sofas. We also greatly enjoyed reading books and magazines from the bookshelves in the hallway. There were tomes on a myriad of topics. There was tons of very helpful Roman history and tour-guide-type stuff.I often came "home" from a day of climbing about the city and couldn't wait to look up something I'd seen that day in one of Vincenzo's many books on Rome. There were plenty of novels, some literature, some not. We were even able to get clothes washed and dried at the apt. When it was time to venture out it was lovely to step from the beautiful, quiet apt. to the marble landing and stairs, cruise down to the courtyard, through the huge door and right onto the sidewalk. There, the ancient cobblestone streets of Trastevere provide immediate outdoor ambiance of Rome's people, sounds and fragrances. These will forever stay in my heart, mind and spirit. It was easy and convenient to use the apt. as home base for day after day of exploration of the "Eternal City". We found our way around easily after the first day there by taking advantage of the Roman Holiday private walking tour of the city. Once our "guardian angel" showed us around for 4 hours, we got the feel of which direction matched which landmark and nothing could hold us back. We found everything they described in the online "brochure" and more and more! This is definately the way to see Rome! I'd go back in a heartbeat! Catherine & Jolie Colby.

    • My wife,Toni, and I spent three weeks in this apartment during March and early April, 2004. It was our home and our base for daily walking excursions throughout Rome. We did about five miles a day. I love to cook and around the corner in Piazza di S. Cosimato is the daily outdoor vegetable, meat, fish and flower market. The neighborhood shops have everything needed to prepare fine meals and the apartment's kitchen has all the necessary utensils. Take along an Italian cookbook. There are many yummy pizza and spaghetti places near the apartment if you don't want to cook. Higher end fare is easy to find. We both love parks and to the west about one mile, past Piazzale Garibaldi with its great views of Rome, is Villa Doria Pamphili, an expansive and gorgeous public countryside in the city. Trastevere, as well as the other older parts of Rome, has many piazzas and each is overseen by a chuch. The churches house treasures of religious artifacts, paintings and sculpture. The Church of San Francesco A Ripa, a short walk from the apartment, contains a beautiful sculpture by Bernini of a saint in rapture. I went to see it several times. The piazzas are social center for friends, tourists, kids and craft vendors. Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is a favorite gathering place and is less thana quarter mile straight north from the apartment. It is usually filled with people and performers: magicians, actors, musicians. The cafes that ring the piazza make it especially inviting. Wherever we went, it was always nice to come "home" in the afternoon during "siesta" or after a dinner out or a movie. The marble floor in the living room would be warm from some mysterious radiant heat source and it kept the apartment cozy. We would lay down on the sofas to read and nap. We used the limo service offered by the owners to get from the airport to the apartment. It was a good choice. We were plenty tired after 15 hours on airplanes from San Francisco and wanted to get to the apartment quickly. Our "guardian angel" was there waiting with the keys, last minute instuctions and answers to our questions. She was available throughout the three weeks and came to see us off on the last day. The limo took us to the airport.
