My wife, 2 daughters, mother-in-law, and I stayed here for 5 nights in July 2012. Ayal's directions were very specific and we let ourselves in easily. There was free parking for our rental car. We reserved both rooms, so it was our own little suite. My wife, younger daughter, and I stayed in the Cypress room. My wife and I slept on the queen bed, which was very comfortable. We were afraid that our younger daughter was going to roll off her daybed, so we were happy that there is a pull out trundle bed under the daybed for the little one to use. The first 3 nights my older daughter slept on the twin bed and my mother-in-law slept on the queen bed in the Jasmine room. For a change of scenery on nights 4 and 5, my older daughter moved into the Cypress room with us and slept on the day bed. There was enough room for the four of us in the Cypress room. All the beds are comfy and both bedrooms and the bathroom are spotlessly clean. I enjoy drinking a cup of coffee in the mornings and that was provided (tea was also available). There is a Rite Aid one block away so we were able to pick cereal, milk, drinks, and detergent there. There is a coin operated laundry a few blocks away, so we were able to pack less clothes for our trip. There is a playground right across the street that our daughters greatly enjoyed. There is a small refrigerator with water in it you can purchase; we also put our milk and other cold drinks in there. The courtyard is spacious and gorgeous! Since this is a "Bed No Breakfast" meals are the guests' responsibility (hence the dining rating of 3 stars above). This was fine with us. Every morning we ate our cereal in the courtyard, in front of a beautiful fountain and nice wrought iron rocking chair. The hosts are very creative people. We enjoyed reading their books and admired their art. Finally, the price was very attractive compared to local alternatives! I highly recommend the Merhaven Bed No Breakfast. Matt and family

Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

My daughter and I visited Charleston for a long weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Merhaven. The accommodations were perfect for our needs, and our bathroom mates were very friendly (of course they were...they were 3 gals from NJ!!). The location was very convenient, just a few blocks from the beautiful university campus. We took in a couple of Spoleto events, and shopping and dining were great experiences. We intend to return for another visit; next time I would like to spend more time in the lovely garden at Merhaven!

We were so happy to find a bed (didn't need breakfast) available in a gracious, stately home to enhance our stay in Charleston. The BEST part was having the wonderful garden for early morning coffee (provided by our hosts) and late night moon-watching. You'll find yourself relaxing in the greenery after a stimulating day, and don't we all need more of that!

The room was comfortable, charming in decor and clean..everything you could want as well as very convenient to the main tourist spots. The outside garden area is so attractive, I photographed every inch of it! And it was a lovely place to unwind after a busy day of sight-seeing.

Located in a picturesque local neighborhood, but only a 15 minute walk from the downtown hubbub, the Merhaven Bed No Breakfast offers the comforts of home. This Arts & Crafts styled house -- one of the few in the area -- represents the definitive in Bohemian chic with a garden patio and art studio just a few steps away. Clean and charming to the max, this bed, no breakfast is close to all main road arteries, especially the beaches, which are less than a 15 minute drive across all nearby bridges. The owners respect the world that Charleston has to offer: grace, elegance, and the quiet dignity of a day gone by. (One caveat: The bathrooms are shared with the other room, so plan your morning and evening time accordingly.)

"My husband and I stayed at Merhaven for two nights and were delighted. The room was airy and attractive, our hosts were helpful, and the enclosed courtyard was a cool, delightful retreat. It is, as they state, a bed with no breakfast, but they provide a small refrigerator and you can make your own coffee. The price was also right, and we would stay there again in a heartbeat."

About the owner: Ayal Hurst is an artist, author, and holistic healer. She loves to stroll around the city taking in hidden side streets and sculpted architecture. She enjoys providing a nurturing place of beauty for visitors. Her husband, Hawk, is a professional storyteller, naturalist, and cultural arts educator who enjoys sharing his joy of Native American flute & drum-making and playing. He travels across the country performing and teaching children and adults how to create ancient musical instruments.

                              Why the Owner Chose Charleston:
After owning and directing an outdoor education and retreat center in the North Carolina mountains, it was time to celebrate all that a beautiful city near the ocean could offer. My husband and I both enjoy nurturing people, and having a vacation rental in downtown Charleston allows us to share what we love with others. Living here has offered us the opportunity to experience a place where the richness of history and culture matter, where what is beautiful and treasured is preserved, and blends into daily life - a place filled with art and music, plays, great restaurants, beautiful, stately homes, and blue harbors with shining boats anchored only a few blocks away. Charleston is a magical place surrounded by water. People here live with a deep understanding of the tides, with the power and greatness and vastness of the sea. Like the land, they are open hearted and easy going, yet there is a profound sense of community and creativity and aliveness here. A sense that we all value the things that are important. Downtown Charleston is a wonderful place. My husband and I love to be able to walk to dinner, or take a stroll along the Battery at sunset before heading off to enjoy the theater. We are constantly amazed by the outstanding architecture and beautiful gardens. We never seem to tire of walking down the same streets and looking at the amazing houses with fanciful gates, wide porches, and intricate iron work, or walking along the beach and looking for dolphins at play in the sea. It's a colorful and lovely lifestyle here - one that we value and are grateful to be a part of. When people come here, they too get a taste of it - of old world charm at its best, mixed with the fun of a city alive with life.

The Unique Benefits at this Bed And Breakfast:
Our home and property is a sanctuary to us and to all who visit. Our neighborhood is small with lovely, historic homes - only a block long. Everyone knows and cares about everyone else. If we walk in one direction, we come to the Ashley River and the City Marina. If we go in the other direction, we come to King street with all of the designer shops and gourmet restaurants and the French Quarter filled with art galleries. When we bought this wonderful and unique house - the only California-style bungalow of its kind on the peninsula - we decided to create a lush garden with different nooks and crannies in it - including a piazza area replete with a fountain made from old grist mill wheels - a garden with towering banana trees and bamboo, fig and loquat trees, Japanese maples, and a variety of tropical plants. It's lovely to drink a glass of wine under the old pecan tree in the courtyard on a warm summer night. Several species of birds call the garden their home, including cardinals, mockingbirds, purple finches, Carolina chickadees, bluejays, woodthrush, wrens, doves, and a family of Coopers Hawks. We enjoy crafting in our art studio - my husband making his rivercane flutes and drums and other intriguing items, and me creating my art/collage pieces. We are only a short walk, through other lovely, old neighborhoods, to the vibrant heart of downtown. Something interesting is always going on - whether it is the a the BB&T Food and Wine Festival, Spoleto, the Cooper River Bridge Run, or the Saturday Farmer's Market with delicious food booths and crafts.
