About the owner: Ginny and I are retired and have homes in Pennsylvania and Cape May. I am a retired owner of an advertising agency and Ginny served 42 years as an R.N. before retiring in 2006. We spend about one-third of our time renovating and fixing up our Cape May home. I enjoy bicycling around the streets of Cape May and often ride around the entire 15-mile perimeter of the Cape May 'island'. Ginny loves to shop in the Washington Street Mall which is only one block away. We enjoy having our extended families visit since we have six bedrooms and a front parlor with beds for 16. Family dining is always a hoot with folks from infants to old guys like us. Relaxing on our front porch is one of the best things we do. The quiet street makes it easy to read or chat with friends and relatives. The front porch has seating for 12 so it accommodates a crowd. We love to come from the beach and use our outdoor shower. It is quite large and can accommodate team cleaning of children. Our back porch is where we most often have our morning coffee and pastries. It faces east so we enjoy the morning sun. A glass-top table and four chairs allow for comfortable space for early risers. Half of the back porch is covered with an awning so you can hide from the sun or rain and still enjoy the seashore breeze. Since we often have several families, the two parking spaces on the gravel covered back yard, plus 3 or 4 alongside the house make it easy to park. We are smack dab in the middle of the historic district featuring beautifully painted Victorian homes. In fact, many people say our street (Hughes) is the most beautiful one in Cape May. The horse-drawn carriages regularly pass by the front porch and the little ones are entranced every time one goes by. Ginny and I both enjoy birding and nature walks and the state park around the Cape May lighthouse is great for both. Ginny spots the birds with her binoculars and I set up to take photos. Even the younger children enjoy the nature walks.
Why the Owner Chose Cape May: We searched from Maine to Florida for a second home. We chose Cape May because it has EVERYTHING. Our home at 514 Hughes Street is about as convenient a place as you can imagine. We can walk the two short blocks to the beach in about five minutes. That is with me carrying two beach chairs, an umbrella, and my sack of reading materials. The beach is never crowded. There are enough folks to enjoy people watching, but no one is right on top of you.
This past summer our oldest grandson, Alex, was a member of the beach patrol in Cape May. We have separate living quarters in the basement of the house so he had a place to collapse after fending off the beach beauties all day.
The Unique Benefits at this House: We love to eat out and we have several favorite restaurants within a short stroll. Then our kids have their own favorites so we get to enjoy them too. Ginny and I enjoy the Back Bay Nature Cruise which opens your eyes to how important the marshes are to the environment. Children often get off the boat on a little island to see the little creatures identified by the ship's captain and crew. Some of our regular outings are the Cape May County Zoo (it is just wonderful), walking along the beach at Cape May Point to search for seashells, strolling up and down the streets in the Historic District, eating dinner outdoors at a restaurant on the mall, and walking the long beach promenade both early in the morning or just at sunset. We always take visitors to see the sunken concrete ship and watch the fantastic sunsets over the bay. Most people do not know that Cape May is on a fairly large island. When you drive 'inland' you will pass many natural areas as well as farms. A regular stop for us is to buy fresh locally grown produce at the farm stands along the back roads. There are some great beaches along the bay side of the island. Another favorite is the Alpaca Farm which offers alpaca clothing as well as alpaca yarn. Ginny is an avid knitter and has made wonderful alpaca hats for our kids and their kids.
