Our family used this beautiful home for a family reunion early in the 2012 season. 3 families with small children plus grandparents fit easily and comfortably in this beautiful home. The rooms are very spacious and provide for a nice sense of privacy - if that's what you're looking for. But the communal spaces also allow for everyone to be together at once comfortably. You can tell the owners have spent a lot of time and energy taking care of this home. It is so charming and it's location to the shops (1 block) and to the beach (2 blocks) cannot be matched. The owners are an absolute pleasure to work with and responded to every question quickly. We have been to numerous houses in Cape May over the years but for all the above reasons, this is our favorite by far.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, families with teenagers.

"Wonderful family vacation" This is the fifth year we are renting this house in Cape May for our family vacation. It is a lovely house on a quiet street within easy walking distance to the beach and the shops. The house is large enough to accomadate a large family. We always have a great time. We especially love the front porch. We sit there every evening watching the trolleys and the horse and buggies go by.

"Outstanding accommodations Minutes away from the Beach" My family and I rented this property for one week in July for two consecutive years. The quality of the accomodations are accurately reflected in the detailed pictures. The residence was spacious and provided ample room and amenities for 5 adults, 4 energetic children and one toddler. Not only were the rooms clean, the kitchen large and fully-stocked, and the two and ½ baths fully functional, but it was evident that the property was well-maintained and affectionately cared for. The proximity to the beach was an added bonus. It a short and pleasant walk to and from the beach - a huge consideration given the scarcity of parking along the boardwalk. Close enough to walk, yet far enough that the street is peaceful, quiet, and avioded by the more boisterous vacation crowd. The backyard provided ample room for outdoors activities if when we chose to remain at home. We couldn't ask for more considerate and attentive landlords who responded immediately to any request and who weren't averse to a nice chat. Cape May is a wonderful place for to vacation, for families and couples alike. For fun, there are nature walks, rented bikes, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the arts, a zoo, and a local theatre. There's even a vegetarian restaurant a short drive away. There are many great places to stay in Cape May but for large families, this residence is hard to top!

"Repeat Renters of This Wonderful House" We have had the fortunate experience of renting this property for several years. It was perfect for our three families - adults and children. This is the perfect rental home in an ideal location - a quiet one-way street, easy walk to beach and to shopping and grocery store. It has all of the amenities we needed for a very comfortable vacation. We rented this house for three consecutive years and the only reason we aren't renting again is that we have a larger group vacationing there in 2011 so needed a bigger home. Enjoy the horse-drawn carriages pass by as you sit on the front porch. You won't be disappointed with this charming, comfortable home!

"Amazing vacatime time at 514 Hughes St Cape May NJ" Wonderful vacation time in 2010. We were two family with 2 kids each for a total of 8. The house is huge, 3 floors, plenty of rooms and space to relax. Perfect location, 30 seconds from Washington St where all the boutiques and cafe are located. 5 minutes walk to the beach. Probably the most beautiful little street in Cape May. Very large front patio where you can relax with your coffee in the morning or after dinner, really nice. We have nothing to complain. The owners make everything possible to help and make your vacation time an unforgetable experience. We are going back in 2011 with the same group! Simon.

"A great place to get the family together" Our whole family has stayed here for the past six summers, and we keep coming back! The house is perfect. It is in a beautiful tree-lined neighborhood close to the beach, well stocked, and the horses clip-clop by in the evening as we sit on the porch. We have enjoyed many good vacations here that our children will remember forever.

"Great rental for large families" This is a great rental for large families - great price, location and size. We have rented this home for many years and love the location - 1 block from shops and restaurants, 1.5 blocks to great beach and boardwalk. Kids absolutely love this house and adults love sitting on the front porch - where we have spent many hours! Owners are lovely to deal with.

          Owner info

          Year Purchased: 1998

About the owner: Ginny and I are retired and have homes in Pennsylvania and Cape May. I am a retired owner of an advertising agency and Ginny served 42 years as an R.N. before retiring in 2006. We spend about one-third of our time renovating and fixing up our Cape May home. I enjoy bicycling around the streets of Cape May and often ride around the entire 15-mile perimeter of the Cape May "island". Ginny loves to shop in the Washington Street Mall which is only one block away. We enjoy having our extended families visit since we have six bedrooms and a front parlor with beds for 16. Family dining is always a hoot with folks from infants to old guys like us. Relaxing on our front porch is one of the best things we do. The quiet street makes it easy to read or chat with friends and relatives. The front porch has seating for 12 so it accommodates a crowd. We love to come from the beach and use our outdoor shower. It is quite large and can accommodate team cleaning of children. Our back porch is where we most often have our morning coffee and pastries. It faces east so we enjoy the morning sun. A glass-top table and four chairs allow for comfortable space for early risers. Half of the back porch is covered with an awning so you can hide from the sun or rain and still enjoy the seashore breeze. Since we often have several families, the two parking spaces on the gravel covered back yard, plus 3 or 4 alongside the house make it easy to park. We are smack dab in the middle of the historic district featuring beautifully painted Victorian homes. In fact, many people say our street (Hughes) is the most beautiful one in Cape May. The horse-drawn carriages regularly pass by the front porch and the little ones are entranced every time one goes by. Ginny and I both enjoy birding and nature walks and the state park around the Cape May lighthouse is great for both. Ginny spots the birds with her binoculars and I set up to take photos. Even the younger children enjoy the nature walks.

Why the Owner Chose Cape May:
We searched from Maine to Florida for a second home. We chose Cape May because it has EVERYTHING. Our home at 514 Hughes Street is about as convenient a place as you can imagine. We can walk the two short blocks to the beach in about five minutes. That is with me carrying two beach chairs, an umbrella, and my sack of reading materials. The beach is never crowded. There are enough folks to enjoy people watching, but no one is right on top of you. This past summer our oldest grandson, Alex, was a member of the beach patrol in Cape May. We have separate living quarters in the basement of the house so he had a place to collapse after fending off the beach beauties all day.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love to eat out and we have several favorite restaurants within a short stroll. Then our kids have their own favorites so we get to enjoy them too. Ginny and I enjoy the Back Bay Nature Cruise which opens your eyes to how important the marshes are to the environment. Children often get off the boat on a little island to see the little creatures identified by the ship's captain and crew. Some of our regular outings are the Cape May County Zoo (it is just wonderful), walking along the beach at Cape May Point to search for seashells, strolling up and down the streets in the Historic District, eating dinner outdoors at a restaurant on the mall, and walking the long beach promenade both early in the morning or just at sunset. We always take visitors to see the sunken concrete ship and watch the fantastic sunsets over the bay. Most people do not know that Cape May is on a fairly large island. When you drive "inland" you will pass many natural areas as well as farms. A regular stop for us is to buy fresh locally grown produce at the farm stands along the back roads. There are some great beaches along the bay side of the island. Another favorite is the Alpaca Farm which offers alpaca clothing as well as alpaca yarn. Ginny is an avid knitter and has made wonderful alpaca hats for our kids and their kids.
