Vacation and relaxation begin on the 8 minute ferry ride to a magical island where a third of the land is a nature preserve. The house-- incredibly comfortable and relaxed --is located on West Neck Harbor. There are 6 bikes (plus 3 children's bikes), 2 kayaks, a Sunfish for sailing, a rowboat and a paddleboat --as well as hammocks and chaises longues and a large deck and outdoor dining area.
The main floor is designed for openness and easy circulation between kitchen, dining room, living room and vaulted porch--all with gorgeous views of the water and beautiful sunsets. A wood burning fireplace is a joy on cooler nights and fall weekends.
On the main floor there is a bathroom and a bedroom with a queen size bed. On the second floor is the Master Suite with a queen size bed, multiple reading nooks, a wood burning fireplace, dressing room/office and a bathroom with a deep steeping tub overlooking the water, a large shower and double sinks. There are two additional bedrooms (one with queen size bed and one with twin beds) and another bathroom.
There is a washer and dryer and children's playroom in the basement.
10 feet away is an amazing double height studio with its own bathroom, kitchenette and sleeping loft with a queen size bed and in the living room a queen size sofa bed.
When you want to tear yourself away from the house there are great restaurants--Vine Street Cafe and Sunset Beach, Cinemas in Sag Harbor and Greenport, fantastic walks on Wades Beach and Mishomak Nature Preserve and astonishing music at the Perleman Music Camp with frequent concerts by some of the most gifted young musicians in the world.

Many places are charming but this home is a rare breed. We stayed one week over the winter holidays and enjoyed the quiet, going for walks in Mashomack Preserve or in Hither Hills, and the beautiful light at the end of every day. The house is decorated with great taste and comfort, with the multi-space living area spacious enough for our extended family to each have his or her own area for their alone time. Bob & Sylvie are extremely considerate and attentive, and made us feel truly welcome in their home.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, girls getaway, families with teenagers.

We spent a long weekend at this wonderful home with 6 people, 3 dogs and a baby and never got in each other's way! What a perfect setting right on the water with a yard full of well manicured plantings. The rear deck was beautiful and provided us with an opportunity to watch the sunset while enjoying a cocktail and cooking dinner on the BBQ. The master bedroom affords you the opportunity to sleep peacefully and enjoy the scenery. The bedrooms are of decent size, the beds are very comfortable and the owners Robert and Sylvie are some of the nicest people I have dealt with (thanks for being so accomodating). Thanks so much for being part of our 3rd annual November getaway by allowing us to rent your beautiful home. We definitely will be back soon!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, girls getaway.

This house was beyond our expectations. It offered us a wonderful combination of a high level of comfort in a tranquil and bucolic setting. The house is furnished with a charming and sophisticated touch that complements and frames the natural beauty outside… displayed through every window (particularly the romantic master bedroom/bath and the main living area). But outside is where the real fun begins with your own dock to swim off of, or to paddle around in a kayak, or to ride a bike along the pastoral roads of the island. All in all, quite a divine time.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

About the owner: We are a couple in our 60's, deeply involved in the arts, multilingual and multicultural. We divide our time between New York and Paris. Our passions are music, particularly opera, contemporary art and architecture, theatre, sailing and skiing.
Why the Owner Chose Shelter Island:
It is close to the Hamptons but far more relaxed. Life on the island has a different rhythm. It is a welcoming place where our children, grandchildren, dogs, friends and happy strangers want to come. There is a sense of well being that is very different from the faster paced life in New York or Paris.

A chance to look at interesting contemporary art, an opportunity to hear young music prodigies from around the world, the joy of walking on beaches and through nature preserves, the possibility of swimming in Fresh Pond or the Bay or jumping in the Ocean.
