We stayed at the Chestnut House last week and had a wonderful time. During our stay we were visited by deer almost every morning and, one morning, by a group of chickens. The house is so very quiet and peaceful at night. All you can hear are the wonderful 'honks' of the Canadian geese flying over head to land in the creek behind the house. We left just a day before Hurricane Sandy was hitting the coast. Hopefully, your family and farm are safe from the ravages of the storm. Thank you for allowing us to stay on your lovely farm. We look forward to revisting in the future.

What a wonderful time we had. The photos do not really do justice to the Chestnut House. It is immaculate, perfectly furnished, a real treasure. My 92 year old mother, husband, our 2 1/2 year old collie and I spent 10 days here. Both bedrooms are upstairs, so you do need to be able to walk stairs, which was not a problem for us. The location is perfect, downtown Annapolis less then 10 minutes away. We went to Annapolis Seafood, purchased fresh steamed crabs and clams and heated them in the kitchen, which has everything needed to fix a complete meal. With a washer and dryer, we didn't have to pack as much as usual, which was a real pleasure. Cantrel's Crab House is minutes away, for great Maryland seafood. DC and Baltimore are easy day trips from the Chestnut House, so there is no lack of sightseeing in the area. The Seznac's are wonderful hosts. Along with Clare, our collie, we loved walking the trails through the woods, seeing (and Clare chasing) the many deer that visit the property, watching the Chesapeake Bay. Because of its location, we were able to allow Clare to run/walk without a lead and didn't have to worry about her getting hit by a car. We could not have found a more perfect spot for our fall vacation. The Bay Bridge is only a couple of miles from the house, connecting you to wonderful islands - St. Michael's is a favorite place, only 1 1/2 hours at most away (and there is a large outlet mall on the way). The Crab Claw is our favorite spot there, easily a day trip with all the wonderful small stores to browse through. We loved staying at Chestnut House and hope we may be able to visit again in the future. This is the perfect spot for a peaceful, restful, beautiful vacation.

Our visit to Chestnut House was outstanding. There is something for everyone. We rented a double kayak at the place suggested in the helpful recreation notes supplied by the owners and left it tied at the creek edge. That is about 100 yards from the house where you can see the water through a small stand of trees. Early morning and dusk was the perfect time to float and circle around to watch blue herons and an osprey nest with babies! We walked in the woods at all times of day and stopped at different vantage points for total serenity since there is a large parcel of land to enjoy. My husband took his daily run on the dirt roads of the farm because he doesn’t like to use hard surfaces. We were able to recharge with total privacy yet have all technology amenities including an ipod doc and FIOS and access to all that Annapolis has to offer- fine dining, great grocery store nearby and quick access to Washington DC. The space is comfortable for three couples and/or various nooks for children to sleep or play. The house design is outstanding and it is in “like new” condition. We happened to book the week of the terrible storms, heat and electricity outage in July 2012. Thackeray was on the phone 2 and 3 times a day with us to figure out when we should come to the house and how to make it livable ASAP. We received a more than generous refund for our missed days. That is the beauty of having owners nearby and support services available for any contingency. We recommend it wholeheartedly and we will be back also.

This is the very first time that we have used VRBO although we had checked out the vacation places regularly. If every property is as spectacular as this one we most definately will use them exclusively. We wanted to be in the Chesapeake Bay area for a weekend. I found this great listing on VRBO. We were a little sceptable at first because of the price. What an unbelievable property. The house was huge and in perfect condition. Every room was spotless! The beds were very comfortable and we all slept well. The place was so phenomenal we almost wanted to shuck the trip and just stay on property. We felt right at home and the area is so relaxing. Although it rained most of the weekend, so we could not take advantage of the great back porch, grill and hammock, the interior of the house was spectacular. My friends wanted to build a house just like this in Ohio for their vacation house. I still am pinching myself to see if we were dreaming. Thackeray was very helpful both with the property and the surrounding area. There were numerous print-outs as to what to see, what was expected during the stay and how to use all of the facilities. I cannot say enought about this amazing house. Thank you so much! We were so pleased, we have told everyone we know. We are travel agents so hopefully this will generate more business for them. This definately rates a 10 out of 10.

What a treasure. We stayed over Labor Day Weekend and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The home and outside amenities left one wanting for nothing. We live in the country and enjoy this same environment when we travel. The Chestnut House offered the quiet and serenity of the country, and we were only a few minutes to grocery stores and the Annapolis area. The property owners are extremely considerate but respect your privacy; however, they are there if you need them. We will definitely make a return trip.

All we were looking for was some time out of town, but we fell in love with Chestnut House. The house is bigger than it looks in the photos. It was just the two of us, but we are already planning to come back with friends. The house could easily accommodate three couples. The location has the perfect mix of convenience and solitude. We had a great dinner a 12 minute drive away in historic downtown Annapolis, and came home to what feels like a woodland cottage. The house is in incredible shape. They claim it is a couple years old, but it still feels brand new. I am used to having to put up with second rate facilities to be this close to nature, but the amenities were actually a good deal nicer than those at my urban apartment. Unfortunately we had rain when we were there, but we enjoyed our brief hike by the river, and loved watching the weather roll across the field. We are looking forward to coming back!

We rented this lovely cottage for a week in July 2010. Our kitchen was getting remodeled in DC and our famiy of 5 needed to relocate. What a lucky find! It was comfortable, cozy, green, fresh open space and a wonderful home to share a vacation. Our littlest child slept well in a packn-play in the upstairs hallway cove. Our boys shared the second bedroom, in two twin beds. They loved playing in the closets that are more like small playrooms. There is a ton of green all around, lots of space and tall trees. Deer roam the property. The air is fresh and cooler than the city. We enjoyed the big backyard, the enormous back porch, hammock and grill for cooking out. After spending lots of time outside, we appreciated having the option of central air on warmer days or nights. Our boys (and us adults too) loved to swim in the creek. My husband commuted on a regular commuter bus between Annapolis and DC everyday - quick, easy and afforable travel arrangement which allowed for me to keep our car for the days with the children. We took advantage of the MANY things to do in Annapolis during the summer (concerts, great food, ice cream, Naval Academy). We found the cottage to be perfect. I see there have been even more updates since we were there last year. This is a very special place. It is loved and cared for by its owners.

              Year Purchased: 2008

About the owner: Our family has been in Annapolis for four generations.

              Why the Owner Chose Annapolis:
This farm has been in our family for years. It's a peaceful place to relax, but so close to our jobs and schools in the city. We've enjoyed making the cottage into a cozy but spacious place for getaways and holidays. The gorgeous wood flooring is made from trees that fell on the property. We love to explore the woods and see the deer and other amazing wildlife, go running on the roads and trails, play in the huge yard, and in the summer, go swimming, fishing and crabbing in the creek. In the winter, we go on walks and come back to hot chocolate and make a lovely fire in the fireplace.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
By renting this cottage, which is placed on a one acre plot quite separate and private from other houses, you are also given access to the surrounding farm and woods owned by our family. While we need renters to be respectful of this property and the wildlife on it, it is an amazing and unique place that we'd love to share with you.
