The house was perfect for a 3-generation family getaway (3 couples, single uncle and 2 kids). Plenty of room and amenities such as pingpong table. Kids loved the hot tub and the hike down to the creek (trail is steep and not immediately visible -- go downhill into forest just to the right of the tobacco barn). Whole party also hiked the Max Patch loop, definitely recommended. Trails at nearby Rocky Bluff campground along Spring Creek and swimming site along French Broad in Hot Springs (on spa grounds) were also good options for kids. A great outing for both children & adults was a trip to the Western Carolina Nature Center in Asheville (live cougars, gray wolves, coyotes, snakes, etc.) followed by lunch at White Duck Taco Shop in Asheville. Consider driving at least one way via NC 209 and 63 east to Asheville: beautiful drive. But just hanging out at the house was also a treat. As others have noted, there are no sounds of civilization, just the birds and the creek, plus katydids & owls at night. We enjoyed every minute of it. If you are coming from Tennessee and the detour between Newport and Hot Springs is still in effect (due to bridge repair), be sure and find out how to negotiate the detour that is used by the locals (Fugate Rd. at Del Rio). It makes the trip 1/2 hour shorter than if you follow the official detour signs. One tip -- we were glad we brought plenty of food with us, since grocery shopping involves driving some distance. Small market with fresh produce and meat in Hot Springs closes early, large supermarkets are further away.Recommended for: Girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, families with young children.

The ppty worked beautifully for 6 adults and 5 children under age 8. We had a grand time, the house was stocked with equipment so it was easy to cook. The beds and linens were nice and the deck was fabulous under the stars. The 3 ring binder with where to go and what to do was great, we found Max Patch 3 x! A cafe in Hot springs provided a consistent internet service and the library, the children loved the library. Thank you so much for your hospitality.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, people with disabilities.

Mountain Wind was exactly what my family needed for a summer retreat. After a brief withdrawal from cell phones, cable television, and internet, we fell into the rhythm of hiking, dinners together, playing games (remember monopoly), reading, talking, and wonderful, peaceful sleep. The property is serene and isolated, yet only five miles from the town of Hot Springs and adjacent to the Pisgah National Forest. It is tastefully decorated, clean, spacious and comfortable with a great kitchen and wrap-around porch complete with gas grill, table and chairs for outdoor dining. There are not many places in the WORLD (none in Europe), that an entire 20 minutes passes, during the day, without the sound of the modern world. There are definitely 20-minute stretches of such silence at Mountain Wind; well, not silence but the music that planes, trains, and automobiles often drown out: the chirping of crickets, the songs of frogs and birds, the rustling of wind in the leaves, and the distant sound of falling water emanating from Spring Creek. Sitting on the scenic porch in the evening, in addition to hearing these songs of nature, we saw 1000’s of fireflies made even more visible by the welcome absence of artificial light. Mountain Wind is an outdoor lover’s paradise. There are several trails directly on the property and several hiking trails within a short driving distance. Spring Creek, a short walk through the property on a rugged trail near the house, is breath taking. This was our favorite spot and we made several trips there during our stay. The creek is pristine and we had fun skimming stones, climbing on rocks, wading, swimming, and hiking up and down the river bank. On the way to the creek, you can’t miss a historical building, a tobacco barn, that is quite impressive and a huge part of North Carolina’s history. Everywhere you look throughout the entire area, there is an abundance of beautiful ground moss, plants, flowers, trees, wild berries, and wildlife. Any direction you travel, by foot or by car or motorcycle, there are picturesque views: creeks, waterfalls and scenic driving tours. Max Patch and Lover’s Leap were two of our favorite hikes and both just a short drive from Mountain Wind. The Rocky Bluff Campground and entrance to the Pisgah National Forest is only about two miles away and has a nice hiking trail as well. We found a wonderful golf course in Greeneville, TN (home of Andrew Johnson, 17th US President). I have been coming to Hot Springs to visit family for the past 10 years. I have stayed in romantic getaways, rustic cabins, riverside retreats and in town family homes. In fact, there are very few rentals that I have not checked out! This home is the winner- hands down. Well equipped kitchen, spacious rooms and wonderful fireplace. It is clean and kept 'up to date'. Additionally, the property is complete with frontage on Spring Creek which you can hear from the first floor master. I would definitely recommend this home and we will be back. Many Thanks!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, families with young children, people with disabilities.

My family and I have stayed here several times and we are always awed by the beauty of the house, land and surrounding area. The house is huge and sleeps many people comfortably. There is a large main room with a kitchen off of it. The kitchen is easy to use and well equipped. There is a nice porch off the kitchen where it is fun to sit and have a meal in an outdoor dining room. There is a master downstairs with a bathroom. The master has a beautiful view outside. Upstairs, there are several bedrooms and a nook. We always hike through the woods and I love the walk down to the creek to explore. It's a very peaceful place to be. It is an easy drive to Max Patch (breathtaking!), to neighboring towns, and the hiking in the area is great. There is a cute little restaurant nearby that serves an awesome pie. Great place to stay! I'm sure you'll love it too!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, people with disabilities.
