Welcome to HALE HONU (House of the Sea Turtle) an amazing vacation home right on the water just 3 miles from Kailua-Kona! **** SPECTACULAR LOCATION!! UNSURPASSED VIEWS!! FABULOUS HOME!! We have a 95% perfect 5-star rating by previous guests!
If you are looking for a unique private, oceanfront home, where the unobstructed ocean view and sounds of the waves will lull you away from all your cares, offered by experienced owners, LOOK NO FURTHER! YOU'VE FOUND HALE HONU!
Hale Honu is a two-story, four bedroom, three bath, truly OCEANFRONT home with extraordinary views of the ocean from all rooms of the home. The home is designed with an upstairs 3 bedroom/2 bath main house, and a large 1 bedroom/1 bath studio/suite with a separate entrance. In July of 2007 we completed a major remodel upstairs, including all the windows, both bedrooms and baths, and the kitchen, and exterior. The bedrooms each boast a 4 X 10 foot retractable window...it's like sleeping on the bow of an ocean liner! The master bath has a new jetted bathtub and a custom Mango wood vanity and vessel sink!
You can rent the entire home or either portion! SEE EXCLUSIVE SUITE RENTAL, MORE PICTURES & CCALENDAR at vrbo listing # 46951.
This gated property is surrounded by a beautiful lava rock wall and borders Pahoehoe Beach Park (an oceanfront beach park with shaded sitting areas, grass and a small keiki (child) friendly beach). A two minute walk takes you to MAGIC SANDS BEACH, the best white sand beach in Kailua-Kona, and famous for body surfing & boogie boarding.
Our home is located just four miles south of the heart of Kailua-Kona village, and two miles north of the Keauhou shopping and cinema complex. Hale Honu is close to everything but is in a world of it's own!
The grounds of the property are nicely landscaped and totally private, enclosed within 6 foot lava stone walls. There are many comfortable places to sit and bask outside in the sun, or relax in the shade of the palms and tropical greenery, including many varieties of orchids. A hammock for two sways in a romantic shaded garden area at the ocean's edge.
When the sea is calm, there is excellent snorkeling at the abundant reef and arches directly in front of the house; the ocean can be entered from the property when the surf is low. You can also easily enter the ocean from the always sheltered small beach at Pahoehoe Beach Park just nextdoor. We swim with Honu (turtles) almost every time! A large lava shelf has excellent tidal pools for exploring at low tide.
The main living area of Hale Honu ("the house") is upstairs, where there are two nicely appointed large bedrooms, plus a 6X10 foot sleeping quarters with a single bed, two full baths, and a sunny, open kitchen and living area, leading to the covered tiled lanai. The kitchen is a gourmet's delight with a 5-Star range, french-door refrigerator, and lots of workspace. The 180 degree views of the Kona coastline are breathtaking from the living area. You may never want to leave this spot!
Throughout the home there are open beam cathedral ceilings and nearly floor to ceiling windows making the home light and airy, with full ocean views everywhere. The sound and energy of the ocean is present in every room. Decorated with Balinese antiques, fine art work and elegant tropical furnishings, you will feel like ali'i (royalty) in this home.
Our favorite lounging spot is the queen sized futon on the upstairs lanai-perfect for a shaded nap or sleeping over the ocean!
On the garden/ground level is the fourth bedroom, the "honeymoon suite". It has been designed as a complete PRIVATE STUDIO/SUITE with a separate, secured entrance, outdoor garden, dining and relaxing areas. This large (650+ square feet) space includes a king-size bed romatically draped in privacy sheers, and a comfortable sitting area with tropical decor, perfect for entertaining or snuggling (!).
The suite has a complete kitchen with cook-top and refrigerator. The bathroom was luxuriously designed with marble tile and glass block, and a large shower containing dual shower heads, (for sharing of course!). Windows and sliders encompass all of the makai (ocean side) walls, so you can simply let the ocean air in, or step out and be right at the ocean’s edge.
Spend your evenings on the tiled tropically decorated ground-floor covered lanai in the Kama'aina (Local) way...barbequeing and talking story. This 400+ outdoor living area if filled with the sound of waves, trade winds, and Hawaiian ambience.
When rented in it's entirety, Hale Honu would be a PERFECT SITE FOR A FAMILY EVENT (reunion, celebration). The beautiful outdoor areas will accomodate a large party, with room for outdoor cooking/reception areas, seating, and spectacular ocean views.
We strive to make our homes and your experience in them unique and filled with the spirit of aloha. You’ll find the home tastefully decorated, carefully maintained, and filled with lots of little extras (CD collection of Hawaiian music, binoculars, books on local history and cultural sites, etc.)
This home imbues a special feeling of Peace and Aloha to everyone who visits it, and it is with that Aloha that we welcome you!

Private Oceanfront 3-4 BR, Spa, on Turtle Cove! Walk to Beach!
Year Purchased: 2004
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes
You'll know the first thirty seconds that you stand on the sea wall and gaze over the ocean. Amazing. Paradise. Perfect... were our first thoughts. It continues to feel the same every day even after seven years.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Peacefulness. With the constant pulse of the ocean, palm fronds swaying and clacking in the off shore breezes, laying in a hammock or soaking in the spa under star studded skies a few feet from the breaking waves is "just what the doctor ordered" for your "cares of the world" to vanish for a while. We all need "down-time" in which we can just breathe and let our bodies and minds relax and rejuvinate. If that is what you want in a real Hawaiian Vacation, you need look no further, you'll find it here, and more, at Hale Honu.
Hale Honu, right on the water! USE HYBRID SETTING FOR BEST MAP AND ORIENTATION TO THE ISLAND!!
This little family friendly beach offers safe access to the ocean excellent snorkeling, swimming, tide pooling, and shelling. Hale Honu borders the north edge of this park.
Want a sugar white sand beach? Boogie boarding? Getting a great tan? Snorkeling? Showers? Lifeguard? Magic Sands is for you. About 100 yards from Hale Honu!
This is "Kona-town," the heart of food, entertainment and shopping. Hale Honu is 3 miles from the village. Farmer's Market here!
The world's most premium coffee, Kona Coffee, is grown in this area. Visit a plantation!
This beach is where Captain Cook met his end on February 14, 1779. This bay is a favorite for kayaking among dolphins (rentals available)and the Capt. Cook monument. Nice place for a day of snorkeli
Owner's Map of Private Homes
This is us, Peter and Darla, relaxing with friends and a "Pint of Liquid Aloha" at the Kona Brewing Company! We bought our first oceanfront condo (KKSR # 186) in 2002, on our first visit to the Big Island. (The Big Island definitely hooked us after several trips to the other islands!) We have been blessed to now offer four homes in Kona, including Hale Honu which we purchased in 2004. There is something about this particular spot on the ocean that everyone feels when they first walk on the site...maybe the turtles living in the cove, the spinner dolphins swimming by daily, or the calving humpbacks off shore every winter, but for us it was totally love at first sight. We have been improving Hale Honu every year, with major remodeling completed in 2008. We have a semi-permanent presence on the Big Island managing our Bed and Breakfast in Kona, The Hawaiian Oasis. Both of us are physicians, with continuing practices in California. We have a large extended family (everyone loves each other!) and three grown children...a fine arts painter, a photographer/film maker, and a fashion designer. We employ a handy man full time on the island to take care of all maintenance issues when we are on the mainland.

The photo listings told the visual story, plus the description of this listing & its location told the storybook side of this great VROB. The owner, management & cleaning crew did everything to make our stay as comfortable & enjoyable as possible. "Thumbs up" for recommending it or for a return visit. Kona was close for shopping & a meal. The White Sands Beach was walkable from house.

Truth in advertising was certainly the case for our vacation at Hale Honu. Very centrally located to all of the Kona coast, but private and removed from the hustle and bustle, the little that exists, on the Big Island, Kona coast. Very functional, well organized, clean, and fully furnished for a casual, yet comfortable residence away from home. Very convenient to two wonderful beaches, with great snorkeling right at your fingertips. Definately recommended.
Owner response:Aloha Pat, Mahalo! The location of Hale Honu has always been one of it's greatest assets. Next to Pahoehoe Beach Park and a short stroll to White Sands Beach, even that great snorkeling reef in front of the house. Hard to beat!! We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us, and hope to see you again!

What a BEAUTIFUL home. Can't say enough about it. Our family of 7 vacationed here in April. The house was well stocked, very comfortable, clean and just perfect. The location was ideal. We enjoyed the hot tub, the view, and the beaches right outside the gate. Peter and Darla were very nice to deal with. Great communication and very accomodating. We had a late flight and they allowed us to stay an extra 5 hours. The "charge" for the extra time...simple..."Would you please start the laundry (linens, beddding, etc.) for us". That was it. We not only started all the laundry but happily finished the laundry. If we ever travel to Kona again this is where we will stay. THANKS AGAIN! It was a wonderful trip.
Owner response:Mahalo Michelle! We are honored that you chose Hale Honu for this very special family trip! Peter and Darla

Our family stayed at this vacation rental for 5 lovely nights in April, our last stay after several weeks on the Big Island. On our arrival at the Turtle House, we felt as though we had saved the best for last. The value here is in its location, private yet with access next door to a public beach, and comfort, the owners have thought of everything to maximize your enjoyment. The new accordion windows in the bedrooms are fabulous, allowing you to sleep as though you are out on the ocean. The kitchen is spacious, extremely well equipped, and there is a gas barbecue (not charcoal!). There are plenty of comfortable conversation / viewing areas on the property, and you can easily move from one to the next as your mood allows. All the rooms are screened (not all vacation homes are - we found out!) for bugs, a necessity in the evening. Parking is secure, bathrooms updated and spacious, and the beds are comfortable. The little extras in the home such as the stereo with numerous Hawaiian music CDs illistrate the care put into this property. I am reluctant to recommend vacation properties without a disclaimer as every family is unique in thier needs and preferences, but I can recommend this property without reserve - you and your family will be happy here. The only complaint I have is we were so comfortable, it took a great deal of effort to mobilize ourselves for any day trips! Don't miss the night dive/ snorkel trip with the Manta Rays - magical! Finally, the cleaning lady was cheerful and helpful, both on our arrival and departure.
Owner response:Mahalo Carolin for the opportunity to be a memorable part of your family's vacation to the Big Island. Our joy is in sharing the Aloha of Kona and Hale Honu with our guests. Thank you for appreiciating our efforts to make our home in the islands YOUR home in the islands. Aloha! Peter & Dar

We brought the entire family to Kona for Christmas this year (kids, spouses and grandchild) and it was by far our best vacation ever! We let our son, his wife and baby have the studio which worked out perfectly. They had the privacy and quiet (for naps) that they needed while the rest of us took over the upstairs. Can't say enough about the view and the sound of crashing waves 24-7, it's enough to make you want to rush home from shopping/sightseeing just to sit on the deck and soak it in. Peter and Darla are wonderful to deal with, be it special requests, dinner suggestions, whatever you can think of. We had Christmas Eve dinner at Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill on their recommendation and it was something we will remember for a long time. Definitely will go back when we visit Kona again (hopefully soon)!! The house has everything you could possibly need while you are there, it is just lovely. Thank you very much Peter & Darla, hope to be in touch with you again in the future.

Thank you Peter and Darla!! We had a fantastic time and much of that time was spent in your fantastic Hale Honu home! The view from the lanai alone is worth the price of the rental fee. The privacy this house affords is just what the doctor ordered. Private but close enough to downtown and shopping . We lost count of the number of turtles and tropical fish that can be seen right from the lanai. The lanai can also be a downfall for this property because it's hard to tear yourself away from the view when it's time to go out for dinner!! We used your snorkeling gear, beach chairs, towels and boogie board so we didn't have to rent any of that. Between my wife and I, we have been to Hawaii 8 times. This is our 3rd time on the Big Island (my favorite island). We have stayed in a hotel, a condo, a private home and a resort (Waikoloa Hilton) and your Hale Honu house was by far the most enjoyable place to stay!! We'll be contacting you in the future to stay there again!! Thanks again!!

Hard to screw it up, but they definitely went above and beyond. Had some snorkel gear, towels galore, kitchen supplies, and detailed welcome packet. Gate didn't work, but not a big deal.
Owner response:Glad you had a great time! The gate failed three repair calls...so getting a new system and changing the gate alignment to allow for an oceanfront 6 person hot tub (purchased 8/18/10).

Beautiful spot with tropical fish and sea turtles in your backyard, a beach as your neighbor, and wonderful ocean views as an alarm clock. There aren't many places in Hawaii nice enough to make you want to just stay home and sit around, but as long as you have some beer and a few friends, this is one of them.

We recently (March 26-Apr 2, 2010) stayed in the full Hale Honu house with two families (7 people) and thoroughly enjoyed the house, the area, and the island (drove nearly 700 miles sight seeing!). Peter and Darla have put together a very good place to stay that puts you in close touch with the sights and sounds of the Big Island. This home is close enough to Kailua-Kona to easily be there when you want but not so close that you have to deal with crowds or traffic (at least we did not).We saw many turtles, fish, and crab playing/foraging in front of the house (literally a few feet away!) and enjoyed watching whales, surfers, fishing, sailing, and a cruise ship all from the house. Just a short walk away are three different places to swim, snorkel, body surf, long board surf, or sun bathe to your desire.A good place that has given us very good memories. We rented the entire house from Dec. 21-26 and the location is glorious! One of my sons staked out the lanai as his bedroom, and the other took the little twin room and loved it. The two grandmas had their own rooms with fabulous views of the ocean and the sound of the waves to lull them to sleep. We took the "honeymoon suite" and enjoyed having our own space. We watched turtles in the waves and visited them on the adjacent beach. We did a bit of sight seeing - snorkeling with the Manta rays and visited the Volcano park, and it was great! We found we most enjoyed just relaxing at the house being mesmerized by the seascape and crashing waves. The owners are very helpful in providing suggestions for dining and gear for snorkeling and even guidebooks on site. We loved the Farmer's market up the road - yummy pineapple banana macadamia nut bread! The house could be improved by replacing dated carpeting with wood or tile floors in the common area upstairs, but all in all it's very comfortable and has everything you need for a week away from home - wish we could have stayed longer!!
