Welcome to HALE HONU (House of the Sea Turtle) an amazing vacation home right on the water just 3 miles from Kailua-Kona! **** SPECTACULAR LOCATION!! UNSURPASSED VIEWS!! FABULOUS HOME!! Our 31 reviews rank us 4.94 on the 5 star rating system 5 star (94% perfect score)! Read on, you'll see why everyone loves this home, the original Kona 'Hale Honu'!
If you are looking for a unique private, oceanfront home, where the unobstructed ocean view and sounds of the waves will lull you away from all your cares, offered by experienced owners, LOOK NO FURTHER! YOU'VE FOUND HALE HONU!
Hale Honu is a two-story, four bedroom, three bath, truly OCEANFRONT home with extraordinary views of the ocean from all rooms of the home. The home is designed with an upstairs 3 bedroom/2 bath main house, and a large 1 bedroom/1 bath studio/suite with a separate entrance. In July of 2007 we completed a major remodel upstairs, including all the windows, both bedrooms and baths, and the kitchen, and exterior. The bedrooms each boast a 4 X 10 foot retractable Nana window...it's like sleeping on the bow of an ocean liner! The master bath has a new jetted bathtub and a custom Mango wood vanity and vessel sink!
You can rent the entire home or either portion! FOR EXCLUSIVE STUDIO/SUITE RENTAL, MORE PICTURES & CALENDAR, see vrbo listing # 46951.
This gated property is surrounded by a beautiful lava rock wall and borders Pahoehoe Beach Park (an oceanfront beach park with shaded sitting areas, grass and a small keiki (child) friendly beach). A two minute walk takes you to MAGIC SANDS BEACH, the best white sand beach in Kailua-Kona, and famous for body surfing & boogie boarding.
Our home is located just four miles south of the heart of Kailua-Kona village, and two miles north of the Keauhou shopping and cinema complex. Hale Honu is close to everything but is in a world of it's own!
The grounds of the property are nicely landscaped and totally private, enclosed within 6 foot lava stone walls. There are many comfortable places to sit and bask outside in the sun, or relax in the shade of the palms and tropical greenery, including many varieties of orchids. A hammock for two sways in a romantic shaded garden area at the ocean's edge.
When the sea is calm, there is excellent snorkeling at the abundant reef and arches directly in front of the house; the ocean can be entered from the property when the surf is low. You can also easily enter the ocean from the always sheltered small beach at Pahoehoe Beach Park just nextdoor. We swim with Honu (turtles) almost every time! A large lava shelf has excellent tidal pools for exploring at low tide.
The main living area of Hale Honu ('the house') is upstairs, where there are two nicely appointed large bedrooms, plus a 6X10 foot sleeping quarters with a single bed, two full baths, and a sunny, open kitchen and living area, leading to the covered tiled lanai. The kitchen is a gourmet's delight with a 5-Star range, french-door refrigerator, and lots of workspace. The 180 degree views of the Kona coastline are breathtaking from the living area. You may never want to leave this spot!
Throughout the home there are open beam cathedral ceilings and nearly floor to ceiling windows making the home light and airy, with full ocean views everywhere. The sound and energy of the ocean is present in every room. Decorated with Balinese antiques, fine art work and elegant tropical furnishings, you will feel like ali'i (royalty) in this home.
Our favorite lounging spot is the queen sized futon on the upstairs lanai-perfect for a shaded nap or sleeping over the ocean!
On the garden/ground level is the fourth bedroom, the 'honeymoon suite'. It has been designed as a complete PRIVATE STUDIO/SUITE with a separate, secured entrance, outdoor garden, dining and relaxing areas. This large (650+ square feet) space includes a king-size bed romatically draped in privacy sheers, and a comfortable sitting area with tropical decor, perfect for entertaining or snuggling (!).
The suite has a complete kitchen with cook-top and refrigerator. The bathroom was luxuriously designed with marble tile and glass block, and a large shower containing dual shower heads, (for sharing of course!). Windows and sliders encompass all of the makai (ocean side) walls, so you can simply let the ocean air in, or step out and be right at the ocean’s edge.
Spend your evenings on the tiled tropically decorated ground-floor covered lanai in the Kama'aina (Local) way...barbequeing and talking story. This 400+ outdoor living area if filled with the sound of waves, trade winds, and Hawaiian ambience.
When rented in it's entirety, Hale Honu would be a PERFECT SITE FOR A FAMILY EVENT (reunion, celebration). The beautiful outdoor areas will accomodate a large party, with room for outdoor cooking/reception areas, seating, and spectacular ocean views.
We strive to make our homes and your experience in them unique and filled with the spirit of aloha. You’ll find the home tastefully decorated, carefully maintained, and filled with lots of little extras (CD collection of Hawaiian music, binoculars, books on local history and cultural sites, etc.)
This home imbues a special feeling of Peace and Aloha to everyone who visits it, and it is with that Aloha that we welcome you!
Please Note... We do offer this property for vacation rental in three different ways:
* Entire Home (including suite for a full three bedrooms and three baths)

Hale Honu, House of the Sea Turtle, was more than a home away from home. It was our home for nine glorious days. We rented the house and the honeymoon suite between three couples. The video and pictures do not do the home justice! It is even more beautiful. Hale Honu is perfectly situated on the beach, with a beautiful park on one side. The views are amazing! We were very close to the downtown area and all that it offers. It served as a great hub as we ventured out to the different parts of Kona by day and came home to our beautiful beach house at night. No matter when time we pulled into our home, we sat on the porch and watched the ocean do her thing. Always magnificent! We stocked the large refrigerator and pantry twice and prepared great meals often. The barbecue and jacuzzi were always available and easy to use. There were plenty of beach chairs, beach towels, beach umbrellas, boogie boards etc for us to use and we used them often. The premises is large enough our one could wander off and lose herself if she wanted to. I would highly recommend this home! We are already planning our next trip to Hale Honu, House of the Sea Turtle.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Expectations exceeded at Hale Honu! What a nice beginning. The lights were on, the gate was open and beautiful floral arrangements were being delivered. A large bowl of produce from the farmers market was there to be savored. The whole house was available for our 11 family members to enjoy for 2 weeks this Feb. 2013. The lani was a great place to start the day with a cup of Kona coffee. We watched for whales, dolphins, sea turtles, long out rigger canoes and bright yellow fish swimming below. The living room had plenty of space for family time and a good place to go over plans for the day. The kitchen had everything and more one could want for preparing meals, snacks, barbeques and picnics for the beach. There was no "bumping elbows" in this kitchen. Of course we did not pass up the opportunity to eat at many local establishments. Enjoying not only the food but the scenery and the people. Bongo Ben's was a favorite with the ocean across the street and everything from macaroni and cheese, brewed iced tea, fish and chips, to melt in your mouth macadamia encrusted fish of the day. Recycling of plastic bottles and aluminum cans was easy. We had plenty of solar heated water. It is nice to know Hale Honu is doing their part. Nice little Pahoehoe Beach adjoined the property and was a perfect place for treasure hunting, watching the green sea turtle sun herself and a great entry spot for our experienced snorkelers to head out for some great snorkeling including colorful coral, sea turtles, beautiful fish and even a ray. A short 2 block walk to White Sands Beach for boogie boarding and body surfing. Even some entertaining acrobatics in the waves:) Plenty of boards furnished at Hale Honu. Kahaluu beach about 1.5 miles south had easy entry, calm water and the fish are amazing in their variety and abundance. The perfect place for a first snorkel. My 11 year old grandson and I swam here for his first snorkel and we both came out with big smiles on our faces. Then off he went full speed with some of our clan. The farmers markets, shops and more shops kept us gleefully occupied. A visit to a chocolate farm, seeing lava flow, ocean fishing, spas, helicopter rides, a visit to Pearl Harbor one could be as busy or relaxed as you chose. Walking over the beautiful bamboo floor to open the wide 10 ft window, hearing the surf pound and lava boulders clunk was a perfect day's ending. Our next visit to Hale Honu is already in our dreamRecommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The wonderful beach home, Hale Honu, on Ali’i Drive south of Kona, lived up to, and exceeded, all of our families’ expectations. Hale Honu itself easily accommodated our extended family, providing plenty of gathering space for the eleven of us, but also some of our “own space” for each of the three individual families. Whales, spinner dolphins, and sea turtles were viewed from the house as well as beautiful sunsets. The large bedroom windows open wide to let the sound of the crashing surf fill the room and put you to sleep. The boys enjoyed sleeping outside on the lanai every night. Snorkeling was excellent right at the ocean in front of Hale Honu. Pahoehoe Beach, immediately adjacent to the house, made for an easy access point in which to enter the water. The rocky underwater ridge and coral attracted an amazing array of colorful fish. Sea turtles were also encountered during most every snorkeling outing. On one occasion, my two sons and I were thrilled to spend as long as we wanted watching a large manta ray. What an experience! For variety, there is a different place to snorkel just a short drive to the south (less than five minutes) at Kahaluu Beach, which our kids nicknamed “the aquarium”. It provides a shallow area of calm water with wonderful coral and fish. We even saw several varieties of eels while there and of course the turtles. It is an area suited well for the beginner, although there are areas for more advanced snorkelers as well. Pahoehoe Beach, adjacent to Hale Honu, was a favorite place to walk each morning after breakfast to see what “treasures” had washed ashore during the night. The little beach was also the site of two brief, beachside wedding ceremonies at sunset on two of the nights we were there. We were “uninvited guests” as we watched the ceremony off of the lanai (outdoor deck) of Hale Honu. I think the fact that the locals have their weddings right there, of all the places on the island, indicates how magically splendid is the location of Hale Honu. A particular sea turtle seemed to enjoy Pahoehoe Beach as well, as it liked to crawl onto the beach and take a short nap in the sun every morning and afternoon. We would also take the very short walk south on Ali’i Drive, (no more than a five minute walk) to White Sands Beach. There the adventurous ones enjoyed body surfing and using the wake boards (provided there at Hale Honu). Those not so ambitious enjoyed sitting back and watching all the action at the sand bRecommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

The house was amazing, everything was as described. All six of us (two older adults, two parents, and two kids) enjoyed the location. Close to town, but not in the middle of all the craziness of downtown Kona. It was so incredible to be able to sit on the lanai, watch the surf, and see the whales. The snorkeling around the reef in front of the house was also fantastic. We were sad to have to leave.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our family was lucky enough to spend 10 beautiful days in Hale Honu. There were 9 of us including three generations. My 80 year old parents, my brother, sister-in-law and their seven-year-old and twin toddlers took the upstairs main house, while me and my 23 year old daughter took the separate apartment downstairs. Both units were lovely, clean and comfortable, with everything you might need for a great vacation. The bookshelves were stocked with travel books and novels. My brother who is a professional cook loved the very well equipped kitchen. It had everything we needed. There was plenty towels, and beach gear to use (boogie boards, noodles, snorkels, fins, beach mats etc). We loved spotting whales, dolphins, fish and turtles right from the lanai or from the fantastic hot tub, we watched for the “green flash” at sunset, and actually saw it twice! The sun sets directly in front of the house! The winds and surf were quite strong the first couple of days (Late January) but we were quickly told about local protected beaches that the kids would enjoy. After that the surf calmed down and we were able to get into the water right in front of the house for amazing snorkeling. Swimming with turtles in front of the house was thrilling. The location is great, with Kona town right down the road. We enjoyed driving to different nearby beaches every day (great beaches very close by in all directions). We were able to take an exciting daytrip to Hilo and Volcano National Park on the other side of the island. We also loved watching the yoga classes in the little park next door from the lanai, and went down for a closer view of the local hula classes. The owners were very accessible and always helpful before and during our stay. We were informed a few days before arrival that there was a problem with the refrigerator in the main house. Peter kept me up to date and made sure that we were provided with ice chests and an alternative refrigerator until the repairman could arrive on Monday to sort everything out. We were also provided with lots of helpful information about directions, local eateries, shopping, nearby activities that really helped us to have a great time. Hale Honu is really an incredible slice of paradise and I would be thrilled to stay here again if we are lucky enough to be able to return. I would definitely recommend this house without reservation.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Stayed at Hale Honu for five nights with my family and some friends. We stayed in the upstairs unit which overlooked the waves. It was lovely to wake up to sun on the water. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean and pleasant. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook fantastic meals. The location is very convenient and several times we walked down to white sands beach to catch the sunset. The house is near town and the owners gave us lots of insider information that enhanced our stay on the island. After staying at a big resort this was a welcome change.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

I've been all over the world, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Bahamas, Jamaica, England, Poland, Korea... I could go on, but this review is not about my travels it's about the amazing stay that I had at the Hale Honu. I love to travel and this trip, mainly because of the accomodations, ranks up there among the best if not the best. For starters the house is right on the ocean. The waves breaking against the black rock with the sunset as a background each night is breath taking. It's right next to a beach where there are tidepools that you can see fish and sea turtles. The snorkeling is top notch, although it's a little calmer down the road 2 miles for weak swimmers. All 4 of the bedrooms have a full view of the ocean that makes you forget that you have a job. My guests and I enjoyed our stay so much we're going to try and make it an annual trip. I wouldn't stay anywhere else... the Hale Honu has it all.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

Our three families had a Wonderful time at Hale Honu. Property was clean and had all the extra toucces that make a place great. Owner was responsive, and answered all of questions and was very helpful. The hot tub was not working the week we were there but it was also very warm that week so this was not a problem for us. Owner did offer to push the repair man to fix it. The only thing that might make the property better would be air conditioning. We saw turtles daily below the patio and swam with them on occasion. Sunsets were wonderful.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

We stayed at Hale Honu for one week for a family wedding taking place on the island. The view from the Master bedroom was simply magical and transfixing. The house was stocked full of everything one might need to get by. The house fit our entire family very comfortably. My 85 year old mother was in the smallest room but was quite comfortable the entire trip. Everything was clean and there were many personal touches that added to the color & character of the house. We had a wonderful time simply sitting and watching the waves, snorkeling, and scouting for sea turtles. Would highly recommend a stay here and we would definately stay again!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: This is us, Peter and Darla, relaxing with friends and a 'Pint of Liquid Aloha' at the Kona Brewing Company! We bought our first oceanfront condo (KKSR # 186) in 2002, on our first visit to the Big Island. (The Big Island definitely hooked us after several trips to the other islands!) We have been blessed to now offer four homes in Kona, including Hale Honu which we purchased in 2004. There is something about this particular spot on the ocean that everyone feels when they first walk on the site...maybe the turtles living in the cove, the spinner dolphins swimming by daily, or the calving humpbacks off shore every winter, but for us it was totally love at first sight. We have been improving Hale Honu every year, with major remodeling completed in 2008. We have a semi-permanent presence on the Big Island managing our Bed and Breakfast in Kona, The Hawaiian Oasis. Both of us are physicians, with continuing practices in California. We have a large extended family (everyone loves each other!) and three grown children...a fine arts painter, a photographer/film maker, and a fashion designer. We employ a handy man full time on the island to take care of all maintenance issues when we are on the mainland.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes:
You'll know the first thirty seconds that you stand on the sea wall and gaze over the ocean. Amazing. Paradise. Perfect... were our first thoughts. It continues to feel the same every day even after seven years.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Peacefulness. With the constant pulse of the ocean, palm fronds swaying and clacking in the off shore breezes, laying in a hammock or soaking in the spa under star studded skies a few feet from the breaking waves is 'just what the doctor ordered' for your 'cares of the world' to vanish for a while. We all need 'down-time' in which we can just breathe and let our bodies and minds relax and rejuvinate. If that is what you want in a real Hawaiian Vacation, you need look no further, you'll find it here, and more, at Hale Honu.
