We stayed at Hale Honu for one week for a family wedding taking place on the island. The view from the Master bedroom was simply magical and transfixing. The house was stocked full of everything one might need to get by. The house fit our entire family very comfortably. My 85 year old mother was in the smallest room but was quite comfortable the entire trip. Everything was clean and there were many personal touches that added to the color & character of the house. We had a wonderful time simply sitting and watching the waves, snorkeling, and scouting for sea turtles. Would highly recommend a stay here and we would definately stay again!

The house was absolutely amazing. From the moment we walked in everything was just perfect. Peter and Darla thought of everything. The house was very well stocked with everything we needed. There was plenty of gear for snorkeling and body boarding. There were binoculars for whale, dolphin and sea turtle watching. Some day we hope to return to the big island and would definately book Peter & Darla's home again for a wonderful vacation. Thanks Peter & Darla

We arrived late Wed. evening and walked into a very welcoming home on the ocean. There were 7 of us and we loved everything about the house. We also rented the studio below the home and that too was perfect. Everything was as Peter & Darla had described. We were put to sleep with the sound of the ocean every evening, made wonderful meals on the gas grill and ate on the lani while watching the sun set. Many mornings we watched as the whales played for hours outside our house. Many large windows and lani's with views that were breathtaking. On a few occassions we also saw dolphins playing and almost every morning there were sea turtles right below our house on the rocks eating and basking in the sun. We had our 3 adult children as well as our two daughters boyfriends with us and the consensus by all was "it's the best vacation I've ever been on"! Would recommend this vacation rental property to everyone. Some day we hope to return to the big island and hope that we will be able to stay at Hale Honu once again. Peter & Darla were awesome and took very good care of us and all our needs.

The photo listings told the visual story, plus the description of this listing & its location told the storybook side of this great VROB. The owner, management & cleaning crew did everything to make our stay as comfortable & enjoyable as possible. "Thumbs up" for recommending it or for a return visit. Kona was close for shopping & a meal. The White Sands Beach was walkable from house.

Our family stayed at this vacation rental for 5 lovely nights in April, our last stay after several weeks on the Big Island. On our arrival at the Turtle House, we felt as though we had saved the best for last. The value here is in its location, private yet with access next door to a public beach, and comfort, the owners have thought of everything to maximize your enjoyment. The new accordion windows in the bedrooms are fabulous, allowing you to sleep as though you are out on the ocean. The kitchen is spacious, extremely well equipped, and there is a gas barbecue (not charcoal!). There are plenty of comfortable conversation / viewing areas on the property, and you can easily move from one to the next as your mood allows. All the rooms are screened (not all vacation homes are - we found out!) for bugs, a necessity in the evening. Parking is secure, bathrooms updated and spacious, and the beds are comfortable. The little extras in the home such as the stereo with numerous Hawaiian music CDs illistrate the care put into this property. I am reluctant to recommend vacation properties without a disclaimer as every family is unique in thier needs and preferences, but I can recommend this property without reserve - you and your family will be happy here. The only complaint I have is we were so comfortable, it took a great deal of effort to mobilize ourselves for any day trips! Don't miss the night dive/ snorkel trip with the Manta Rays - magical! Finally, the cleaning lady was cheerful and helpful, both on our arrival and departure.
Owner response:Mahalo Carolin for the opportunity to be a memorable part of your family's vacation to the Big Island. Our joy is in sharing the Aloha of Kona and Hale Honu with our guests. Thank you for appreiciating our efforts to make our home in the islands YOUR home in the islands. Aloha! Peter & Dar

What a BEAUTIFUL home. Can't say enough about it. Our family of 7 vacationed here in April. The house was well stocked, very comfortable, clean and just perfect. The location was ideal. We enjoyed the hot tub, the view, and the beaches right outside the gate. Peter and Darla were very nice to deal with. Great communication and very accomodating. We had a late flight and they allowed us to stay an extra 5 hours. The "charge" for the extra time...simple..."Would you please start the laundry (linens, beddding, etc.) for us". That was it. We not only started all the laundry but happily finished the laundry. If we ever travel to Kona again this is where we will stay. THANKS AGAIN! It was a wonderful trip.
Owner response:Mahalo Michelle! We are honored that you chose Hale Honu for this very special family trip! Peter and Darla

We brought the entire family to Kona for Christmas this year (kids, spouses and grandchild) and it was by far our best vacation ever! We let our son, his wife and baby have the studio which worked out perfectly. They had the privacy and quiet (for naps) that they needed while the rest of us took over the upstairs. Can't say enough about the view and the sound of crashing waves 24-7, it's enough to make you want to rush home from shopping/sightseeing just to sit on the deck and soak it in. Peter and Darla are wonderful to deal with, be it special requests, dinner suggestions, whatever you can think of. We had Christmas Eve dinner at Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill on their recommendation and it was something we will remember for a long time. Definitely will go back when we visit Kona again (hopefully soon)!! The house has everything you could possibly need while you are there, it is just lovely. Thank you very much Peter & Darla, hope to be in touch with you again in the future.

Thank you Peter and Darla!! We had a fantastic time and much of that time was spent in your fantastic Hale Honu home! The view from the lanai alone is worth the price of the rental fee. The privacy this house affords is just what the doctor ordered. Private but close enough to downtown and shopping . We lost count of the number of turtles and tropical fish that can be seen right from the lanai. The lanai can also be a downfall for this property because it's hard to tear yourself away from the view when it's time to go out for dinner!! We used your snorkeling gear, beach chairs, towels and boogie board so we didn't have to rent any of that. Between my wife and I, we have been to Hawaii 8 times. This is our 3rd time on the Big Island (my favorite island). We have stayed in a hotel, a condo, a private home and a resort (Waikoloa Hilton) and your Hale Honu house was by far the most enjoyable place to stay!! We'll be contacting you in the future to stay there again!! Thanks again!!

Hard to screw it up, but they definitely went above and beyond. Had some snorkel gear, towels galore, kitchen supplies, and detailed welcome packet. Gate didn't work, but not a big deal.
Owner response:Glad you had a great time! The gate failed three repair calls...so getting a new system and changing the gate alignment to allow for an oceanfront 6 person hot tub (purchased 8/18/10).

Beautiful spot with tropical fish and sea turtles in your backyard, a beach as your neighbor, and wonderful ocean views as an alarm clock. There aren't many places in Hawaii nice enough to make you want to just stay home and sit around, but as long as you have some beer and a few friends, this is one of them.

Truth in advertising was certainly the case for our vacation at Hale Honu. Very centrally located to all of the Kona coast, but private and removed from the hustle and bustle, the little that exists, on the Big Island, Kona coast. Very functional, well organized, clean, and fully furnished for a casual, yet comfortable residence away from home. Very convenient to two wonderful beaches, with great snorkeling right at your fingertips. Definately recommended.
Owner response:Aloha Pat, Mahalo! The location of Hale Honu has always been one of it's greatest assets. Next to Pahoehoe Beach Park and a short stroll to White Sands Beach, even that great snorkeling reef in front of the house. Hard to beat!! We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us, and hope to see you again!

We recently (March 26-Apr 2, 2010) stayed in the full Hale Honu house with two families (7 people) and thoroughly enjoyed the house, the area, and the island (drove nearly 700 miles sight seeing!). Peter and Darla have put together a very good place to stay that puts you in close touch with the sights and sounds of the Big Island. This home is close enough to Kailua-Kona to easily be there when you want but not so close that you have to deal with crowds or traffic (at least we did not).We saw many turtles, fish, and crab playing/foraging in front of the house (literally a few feet away!) and enjoyed watching whales, surfers, fishing, sailing, and a cruise ship all from the house. Just a short walk away are three different places to swim, snorkel, body surf, long board surf, or sun bathe to your desire.A good place that has given us very good memories. We rented the entire house from Dec. 21-26 and the location is glorious! One of my sons staked out the lanai as his bedroom, and the other took the little twin room and loved it. The two grandmas had their own rooms with fabulous views of the ocean and the sound of the waves to lull them to sleep. We took the "honeymoon suite" and enjoyed having our own space. We watched turtles in the waves and visited them on the adjacent beach. We did a bit of sight seeing - snorkeling with the Manta rays and visited the Volcano park, and it was great! We found we most enjoyed just relaxing at the house being mesmerized by the seascape and crashing waves. The owners are very helpful in providing suggestions for dining and gear for snorkeling and even guidebooks on site. We loved the Farmer's market up the road - yummy pineapple banana macadamia nut bread! The house could be improved by replacing dated carpeting with wood or tile floors in the common area upstairs, but all in all it's very comfortable and has everything you need for a week away from home - wish we could have stayed longer!!

Peter and Darla, At the risk of repeating things that you have probably heard a billion times, our stay was amazing. The wedding, and sharing of such treasured memories by both families will never be forgotten. For some, it will probably be the last trip of it's kind, for others it will inspire the motivation to broaden their traveling experiences. On the last day that we were all together on the patio, whales displayed their entire body from the water, followed by several tail slapping maneuvers, unlike any that our visitors had seen, even on the boat tours. My nephews and nieces keep comparing this vacation to other trips that they have since taken, "It was fun, but no Hawaii!" We can not say enough in thanks for the opportunity to stay at your home for such a special time in our lives. Mahalo, Ryan & Marie Polito
Owner response:Mahalo Marie and Ryan! We are most happy that you experienced the wonder of Kona and Hale Honu. Thank you for the photo of the Humpback breeching a few hundred feet in front of the lanai! A hui ho ("until next time") ~ Aloha! Peter and Darla

We recently stayed at Hale Honu for one week in July with our family of five. Peter and Darla kindly rented their spectacular paradise complete with its live ocean surround sound and unbelievable views 24/7 from the widest open windows we've ever seen. Peter and Darla's attention to detail (both before, during, and after our stay) was evident in their prompt e-mails, labeled cupboards, comfortable beds, soft beach towels, stylish turtle artwork, and unique island accents in every room. They also offered all of those simple comforts of home like a blender for those strawberry banana morning smoothies, coffee maker for fresh brewed Kona coffee, 2 copies of The Big Island Revealed, blow dryer, huge refrigerator, water shoes, beach mats, first aid kit, ice packs, laundry detergent and more. Peter and Darla also provided a notebook filled with personal recommendations for nearby restaurants and all of their favorite beaches. Hale Honu has a lovely beach next door and we especially enjoyed watching the local surfers at Magic Sands Beach just a bit farther down the road. Every snorkeling spot they recommended was perfect and we all certainly saw our share of sea turtles. Our youngest son counted 27 of them during our stay! Not sure how Peter and Darla managed this but they also provided us with the clearest blue ocean waves below and the blackest night sky filled with zillions of stars above. This vacation was also our 25th wedding anniversary and we could not have imagined a more peaceful or breathtaking place to celebrate! We left a list of our Top 10 Favorite Things about Hale Honu in the Guestbook there. You'll just have to visit to read it and to see it to believe it! We've already returned to Hale Honu often in our minds and family conversations but we do hope to visit again. Mahalo and Aloha!
Owner response:Mahalo John and Myra for your sharing your experience with us. Knowing your family had such a wonderful time makes all of our extra efforts more than worthwhile. Aloha, Peter and Darla

We got married at St. Peter's church in July 2009. We rented the entire property so that our close friends and family could stay with us during the wedding. The house did not disappoint us!! In fact, I wish we were able to stay longer. The location was so ideal..it was very close to our church! We liked that it was far enough from the crowds but close enough to "go into town" and explore. Everything you need is close by...the grocery store, the little shops for gifts and such, restaurants and of course..the beach. A personal tip for the beach though...you will need water shoes. They have some at the house but we ended up buying a pair while we were there because we stayed on the Big Island for almost 3 weeks and took them with us to the Hilo side. But, it was great to hop over the wall and there you are...the beach! We LOVED LOVED LOVED the windows in the rooms, the way they opened completely so you can hear and see the water day or night. We often all sat around watching the sunset together chatting and laughing..it was such a special time for us. Hale Honu is a real gem. And thank you Peter..working with you was a breeze..no problems and very helpful. Mahalo..we look forward to staying at Hale Honu again!

I would highly recommend this property for anyone who is wanting to be right on the ocean, the crashing waves are visible and audible from each room. I literally did NOT want to sleep because the sound was so awesome, although the beds were more comfortable than my bed at home. The house is all windows so you don't miss an inch of the spectacular views and the sunsets are stunning. I will remember this vacation forever. Would also like to add that these owners answer all emails and phone calls promptly, it was a pleasure to deal with them. I will definitely stay here again!

Dear Peter & Darla, Two words describe Hale Honu: causal elegance. We're a couple of travel professionals (writer & hotelier) who have seen it all, but we both agreed that Hale Honu was the best place we've ever stayed in Hawaii. In fact, during our stay, we spent one night at the ritzy Fairmont Orchid after their wonderful luau, but couldn't wait to get back to Hale Honu the next day. We're already looking forward to our next visit! Thanks again Peter & Darla.

With the help of Darla and Peter, our visit to Hale Honu was perfect. Once we decided to go to Hale Honu making the booking was very straightforward. Darla and Peter were able to accommodate our needs and even gave us tips on where to go for dinner and places to visit. Thank Darla and Peter for making our stay so wonderful. We stayed in the studio on the property, which is located just outside of the main tourist area of Kona. It is well situated and literally next door to a small sandy beach. It is only a few minutes drive to the heart of Kona and a 5 minute drive to a small shopping mall where you can find a grocery store, post office and other stores. The studio was well laid out and had wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean. Waking up to this view each morning was a magnificent way to start each day during our stay in Kona. The studio was well appointed in terms of conveniences. The kitchen was sufficient that it enabled us to prepare meals on days we did not wish to leave our beautiful surroundings. Darla and Peter make beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel equipment and a cooler available to their guests. These items certainly helped to make our stay more enjoyable. It’s not very often that you can go on vacation and have access to all the conveniences of home. The lanai for the studio was a wonderful place to eat breakfast, or any meal for that matter. It was also a place where we were able to lounge, read or just relax if we didn’t feel like setting off for a destination. Beyond the lanai is nothing but the blue perfection of the ocean. What more could one ask for than to sit and watch turtles float just beneath the cool surface of the ocean. Our visit to Hale Honu was certainly one of the most relaxing vacations we’ve ever had and we plan to return at the earliest possible opportunity. August 2008Jayne & Rob

All I can say is WOW! What an amazing experience, location and several days that I did not want to end. Had planned to visit the island more, but the home was so nice, we hardly left. The amenities, accommodations and location are one I definitely plan to visit again. Without a date. If you get a chance, definitely request this breath taking paradise. This was my first time to the Big Island and now don't have any interest in going back to any of the other islands. Just falling asleep to the sound of the ocean is the best medicine there is. Let alone the sunsets, turtles, the great beach steps away and being able to relax with a beer in the hammock. Aloha! Wendy

We like to think that we know Hawai'i,since we've been returning every winter since 1985, and have visited 7 separate isands. We've tried every possible location, including oceanfront, downtown, high rise, mountain-top, upcountry farmhouse, coffee plantation etc., and Hale Honu remains our favorite We have never found a better place to relax than the master bedroom at Hale Honu. The extreme proximity to the water, and the careful placement of the bedrooms, & bedroom windows, make this the only place where you can simply lie in bed all day, and have a perfect view of waves breaking over the lava outcroppings. We have bad backs, and spend much time in bed, and we believe that no bed anywhere else in the islands, can match the upstairs master bed for view, and convenience. Thats why we keep returning. We recommend it highly.!

We have really enjoyed your place. Have seen volcano, whales, dolphins, turtles, etc. Mostly great weather and a fantastic location on the island. Home could not be better located--and the views are unmatched. Ocean access is superb. We hosted our daughter and her family for a week in March--we were here almost a month-- and they were wowed by the proximity to the ocean. We watched the sunset every evening from the lanais downstairs. The home and studio are well furnished with everything you could possibly need for cooking, eating, playing on the beach or just relaxing. Being right next to a small park is a real plus Glad we found this place and would not stay anywhere else on this island.

Hi Peter and Darla, Thanks so much for your "love home." It is readily apparent to all that come here, there is love in this house - every amenity, every nick-nack, every comfort. "The Bad Boys of Kona" (tiger sharks) came through yesterday, but the real treat was the turtles that didn't leave the cove. We swam with them every day. We lost our waists at Fujimamas! And for all seven of us, it is about the laughter and blessing of family. Mahalo! Pam and Vince Cardinale

Gosh, where to begin. Stayed here with several friends in February 2006 and this place is absolutely fantastic! Literally steps from the shoreline where on sunny days you can see tons of reef fish (yellow tangs, etc) from the 2nd level porch as well as Honu and the occasional whale. Great waves in the beach park right next door. Very convenient to everything in Kailua-Kona as well. Will definately be a repeat renter here - the entire experience was worth it and truly made for the most memorable trip to Hawai'i yet!

The Hale Honu is a treasure! We enjoyed seeing whales breach from the home, along with being entertained by some spinner dolphins. The home is very comfortable and the views of the ocean are spectacular. Let the waves lull you to sleep! We also enjoyed the hammock as we listened to the waves crash in. I'll be thinking of this vacation for many years to come:)
