You will not forget a weekend spent at Windbeam House, 6 miles from charming Red Wing, Minnesota. Floor-to-ceiling living room windows offer spectacular views of not only Goose Lake but also the bluffs of historic Red Wing across the river. This tree-lined panorama provides breath-taking year round scenery, including miles of the Mississippi's famous fall foliage and ever changing waters. Because the house sits on the edge of the bluff above the lake, it is a perfect spot to sit and relax, watching a wide array of birds and animals, including eagles and flocks of migratory swans and pelicans in season, not to mention trains passing silently along the edge of the lake below.
This four bedroom rambler sleeps 12 with one full bath and two half baths, a family room, full kitchen and dining room. Only one hour from Minneapolis/St.Paul or Rochester, Minnesota, this home offers a retreat for groups from 2-12. And while it is hard not to be mesmerized by the view, it is also within a few miles of shopping, hiking, fishing, golf, snowshoeing and skiing. Not to mention an extensive arts community, restaurants, antique dealers, the Sheldon Theater and Treasure Island Casino.
This peaceful house is pet friendly and comfortably furnished in southwestern style. The master bedroom is equipped with a queen size bed and includes a private half bath. The other three bedrooms have double beds. Downstairs, the family room offers two full futon sofas.
Four generations of our family have come together in this home and we look forward to sharing it with you.

We enjoyed our stay at Windbeam house! We had anticipated a more rustic home/setting, but the home was clean, quiet and very welcoming. The rooms were clean and the beds very comfortable! It was very basic, but we have done VRBO before and have learned to bend to things we need or want. This home is close to great shopping, hiking, the beautiful Mississippi River and I would suspect summer/fall would have been a more enjoyable stay. It was really cold the weekend we stayed and too icy to ski/snow shoe. Trudi, the owner was very nice and welcoming and showed us around and made us feel comfortable. All in all, very pleasant place to have a family gathering -- don't go to a hotel!!

Early Thanksgiving Gathering
Early Thanksgiving Gathering
Our family enjoyed a long weekend together at Windbeam House. The hands down highlight of this house is the view from the living room. Eagles really do love the water and woods of this area and the train tracks along the water's edge offered frequent train traffic to the absolute delight of our 3 year old grandson. You don't need to worry about train noise, it gently rumbles by, no whistles and no problems with sleeping. It is an older home giving it a feeling of Grandma's house. We were happy to have 4 generous sized bedrooms. A large table in the dining room seated our family of 10 together where we gathered for meals, including a homemade traditional Thanksgiving meal. We were grateful for a large refrigerator and a user friendly kitchen. We enjoyed the spacious living room, basement and even the large porch in November since Saturday temps were in the 60's. Our grandkids loved Colvill Park in Red Wing, it must have the biggest playground ever! We took a short drive to Bay City to the Flat Pennies Ice Cream shop. Great ice cream, a friendly owner and even a caboose to play on. The adults in our group enjoyed hiking Barn Bluff, the Smokin' Oak Restaraunt in Red Wing and The Falconer Vineyard in Red Wing -- a picturesque vineyard serving woodfired pizza and wine -- we recommend their Maple Red Wine. They do have limited hours. If you love historical buildings and Sunday morning worship, don't miss going to church in downtown Red Wing! This is a beautiful area and Windbeam House provides a comfortable home that embraces this outdoor beauty.

This was a great home for our adult children and their young families to have time to play together. We did outings to Bay City Beach on the Mississippi River, Flat Pennies Ice Cream, Little House in the Big Woods in Pepin, the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, lots of swimming & playgrounds in Red Wing. The owners are very helpful. This midwest family reunion was delightful.

Great large sitting room with couch and chairs overlooking the Mississippi River Valley through large picture windows... highlight was sitting in this room after a long day with a frosty beverage. Plenty of sleeping and living room for 5 adults and 5 children, ages 3 to 10! Very clean! Hope to stay here again!

Owner response: That was a hot stay, even for people from Arizona! I know the house stays cool and I'm glad you all had a good time. 5 children can be a challenge and the house didn't have a mark on it, thanks for being so thoughtful. Hope to see you again.
Great place for families

We came upon Windbeam House while searching for a place our whole family could be located at, there were 9 of us! The house sleeps 12, and there is plenty of bathroom space for all to get ready. We were in town for two days playing in a baseball tournament. When we arrived the house was a bit musty smelling but lots of rain had fallen the night before. A humidifier was in the house and seemed to take care of that. The house is so clean we had no problem letting our 9 month old granddaughter crawl around. Plenty of space and nothing had to be moved. Lovely bedrooms and sun room as well. Full kitchen was awesome, we never had to eat out, saving us lots of money. We did have one glitch tho, and that was the clothes dryer did not work. We found this out after we had washed uniforms, the guys had to wear them wet. It did not stop us from having fun, even tho we lost both of our games. The house was big enough for us to have some of the team come over and picnic with us...it was really a great time of making memories, and we hope to visit Windbeam House again some day! Trudi was very nice and allowed us to come early, very easy to work with and also very professional. I've already referred two familes here. And the view was really beautiful, we spent most of our time in front of the huge living room windows!

Owner response: Glad you enjoyed your stay. I am sorry about the dryer, who knew? Now I know how to re-attach a dryer belt. I learn something every day. Hope to see you at Windbeam House again soon.

We had an excellent time renting this property. It was very roomy and had enough space to let everyone have their own. The view of the bluffs out the living room window is beuatiful. Watching the eagles soaring overhead was a treat. All the essentials are there and the owners are very cordial. We spent some time with them going over the layout and they were very friendly and willing to help in all aspects of our stay.

Owner response: Thanks guys! We love having groups of fishermen stay at Windbeam House. Who knew? They consistently love the house and leave it spotless at the end of their stay. We've never found so much as a fish scale left behind. Having four bedrooms and additional sleeping space in the family room makes it ideal for these kinds of groups. We hope they come again soon.
We spent 4 nights in late October. Six fishermen used to staying up the river at Everts the last 10 years. We plan on staying the next 10 years at Windbeam House. It provided for all our needs and wants. Trudi was very accomodating and easy to work with. The house had everything we could have needed. Trudi even provided bath soap and shampoo all natural great quality. This is a older home with great views and a lot of character. We highly recommend giving Windbeam House a try.

Owner response: Thanks so much for your kind words Steve. At first we weren't sure how we felt about a bunch of guys with smelly fish but it turns out that fishermen are some of our favorite groups. Great guests! Someone has even left a huge jar of breading for fish in the pantry. Guess they plan to come back and we hope they do.
Stayed here for our girls weekend. Spent the first night cleaning the kitchen, removing a dead mouse from under the kitchen sink. There were mouse dropping in the kitchen drawers, on the counters and in the downstairs shower. Washed the kitchen floor. It was dirty and had something sticky on it. Removed everything from the fridge and scrubbed it down. It was so dirty. Dining room table had old tablecloth with dried food on it. The carpeting had dead and live ladybugs all over it. Planned on grilling for one meal but could not because the grill grate was rusted. Baked our chicken instead. Suggestion, hot water heater could be turned up. Showers were luke warm. In spite of this, the views were great and time with friends was wonderful.

Owner response: Wow! We are, of course, very embarassed by this review. Windbeam House is a lovely home that is generally in top shape. Evidently the cleaning for these visitors was not up to their, or our, standards. I'm sorry that they were the ones to catch the mouse but it seems to have cleared up the problem and the drawers have all been cleaned out and we have gone over the whole house to make sure some of the other things mentioned are taken care of. Rest assured, aa review like this one has us on our best behavior.

Owner response: Thanks Harald and thanks also for the great note you left in the guest book. As I mentioned, keep us in mind another time and you may find we have added cable TV and even more entertainment equipment!! Trudi
My sisters, mother and I take a yearly shopping trip along Highway 61 in the fall. This past Oct. we did something different and decided to look for rental property instead of doing the hotel thing. We were so fortunate that my husband found the Windbeam Home. As much as I do not want to have the word get out about what a great house this is and the location is incredible, I also want to make sure that Trudi continues to be able to rent this out.: ) The home is very clean, well equpped and the setting is just priceless! We really felt very comfortable and at home here. All of the artwork around the house is awesome. This is one of those hidden gems that I am so happy to have found. Thank You

Owner response: I think "girls weekends" are one of my favorite visitor categories for Windbeam House. I picture all of them lounging out in the family room watching favorite movies and eating popcorn with a fire in the fireplace. Hope to see you all again next year and thanks so much for the review Dawn.

About the owner: We live on a small farm just 6 miles from Windbeam House. We purchased our farm in 1976 when the farmhouse was about to be demolished. Much of our time since then has been spent renovating the house and outbuildings and creating the many gardens that surround Windbeam Farm.
Why the Owner Chose Red Wing:
We inherited this property from Paul's parents in 2010. Immediately, we saw the potential for furnishing it as a guest house for the many friends and families who visit the Red Wing area. Womens Weekends Away and Fishing tournaments are two of the groups who find Windbeam House the perfect place to stay.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Practically every person that comes through the front door of Windbeam House is awed by the lovely view of the Mississippi River and the bluffs of Red Wing that greet them through the wall-to-wall windows of the living room. People tell us they sit in that room for many peaceful hours, watching the river, the birds but especially the eagles who perch in the trees below the house.
