Burnsville house description
We call our hideout Maple Camp because that's the bald we see from our deck. We're across the course from the trout stocked S Toe river, close enough to hear it's perpetual roar. Three levels, 3 full baths surrounded by trees with no view of street. Parking is level, paved and one step onto the deck will get Grandma and Grandpa easily into the main living area. Two bedrooms here with a full bath, 2 story greatroom with river rock fireplace and all glass on the front so you feel like you're outside the whole time!
It's 2 miles to the parkway and 20 minutes to Burnsville but, it's a world apart from the lifestyle most of us lead. The golf, fishing and hiking are the main interests here and with the opening of the ABC store, the casual dining spots in Burnsville have really kicked it up a notch. The seasonal restaurant at the clubhouse (Swiss chef Teo) has a variety of localized menu selections and a full service bar.
The golf course offers spectacular views of the numerous peaks surrounding it as it winds through numerous creeks and the river. The Charlotte Observer writes "If you want the full experience of N.C. mountain golf, you can get it here."
You can actually hike to the top of Mt Mitchell from a connector trail right in the community - it's a long way! One way or the other, you should see the new, handicap accessible 360 view platform at the pinnacle. Endless views with placards telling you what you're looking at.
We generally do some hiking and come home to a glass of wine on the deck followed by something on the grill. If TV is ever on, it's for classic oldie movies. Sleep with the windows open and let the river hush you goodnight.
Asheville's vibrant, art centered downtown is one hour by Hwy 19E or the Blue Ridge Parkway. The eclectic mix of craft shops, sidewalk cafes and live music venues make for an enjoyable day trip.
Penland School of Art is 40 minutes in the opposite direction. Here you'll find handcrafted art and jewelry to rival any original art made in our country today.
Meanwhile, back at Maple Camp, nothing is going on. In season, you'll hear someone swat at a golf ball once in a while but, mostly you'll hear our mountain-sized woodpeckers and songbirds using the S Toe for backup. No Starbucks, no chain franchises, no traffic and no cell phone connection til you get to the clubhouse!
If you're looking to relax and recharge by getting emersed in a really natural, quiet zone, our place is a good place to do it without breaking the bank.

This family actually took Grandma with themand found that our place was perfect for her. She had her own, private suite with sitting area, full bath and fully covered porch entrance on ground level. No steps for early morning walks or to sit outside listening to the river or summer rain. Two additional floors, with baths, gave everyone else their own space. Teo's Thursday night BBQ and beef brisket buffet works well when the cook wants a night off accompanied by a glass of Chardonay!

These folks used to live in the area so, they are very familiar with the most convenient locations to enjoy what they come up for. Located in a community with well kept, paved streets close to Hwy 80 doesn't create an adventure in getting your family to a mountain house! Having a casual dining restaurant within walking distance doesn't hurt on vacation either. October presents incredible golf and hiking weather at the highest point east of the Mississippi River.

Our Family Wedding Gathering
We had a wedding to attend at Eagle's Nest and decided to make a family getaway experience out of it too. Was able to get this lovely cabin that had so many beds and baths!! Everything you need, just like at home. I'm ready to go back in the fall--Beautiful view-on the golf course.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
WE spent two weeks here in June&July 2011. It is an excellent place for a Golf vacation. The house has three floors with bathrooms and sleeping accomodations on each floor. Although not air conditioned the first floor was always cool even at mid-day. We woke up mornings to 60 degrees and it never was too hot for comfort. Mt. Mitchell Golf Course reduces Greens fees for people staying in the immediate community. We played both Mt. Mitchell and Grassy Creek in Spruce Pine. Teos Restaurant at the golf course had excellent offerings close by and it's only a short drive to Little Switzerland,Spruce Pine or Burnsville for Meals and shopping. I am planning another trip for the fall.

About the owner: Tom & Dawn Alligoods' first visit together to Mt. Mitchell was a New Years Eve backpack in 1981. We fell in love in our tent while enjoying a foot of fresh snowfall that night. We love hiking the area with our four legged daughter and friends. If you'd like free guide service during your stay, call us!
Why the Owner Chose Burnsville:
We were married on a homesite that we own in the NC mountains but, have not built there yet. The Black Mtns trip was the first backpack Dawn ever experienced so, this area has always held special memories for us. It's exactly 2 hours door to door from our home and year round access is good because of the well kept paved roads. Several families live here fulltime so, snow is removed when necessary and that was important to us because we love the wintertime up here. Just off Hwy 80, we don't have to struggle up a steep, curvy road to get to our hiding place.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love to take our daughter down to the river before sun up. It's a magical place that time of day and we almost always get extended visits with small families of deer and wild turkeys. The cart path doubles as a walk/jog path mornings and evenings (anytime out of season) with multiple loop tie ins allowing flexibility in how far you'd like to go.
