Three story home boasting 2 Master Suites & 3.5 baths sleeps 12

Experience living in the Historic District in one of the oldest, stately private residences erected in 1819. Built originally for John and Elizabeth Haupt in 1791, construction was halted due to the untimely death of John in 1794. Elizabeth, along with her nine children, remarried Thomas Dowell 1.5 years later and bore another 13 children raising all 22 in this home.

The house has undergone many changes in the last 190+ years! The house was formerly an art gallery prior to being restored to its natural, historic grandeur in 2008. A labor of love for 1.5 years the house maintains its historic charm while embracing the comforts of the 21st century. Original heart-of-pine floors, six coal-burning fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows with original glass panes, Venetian glass chandeliers, an 800 lb. Carrara marble mantle and a bronze fountain in the courtyard are a few of this home's highlights! Custom wood blinds throughout, hand-painted anaglyptas, slate & brick flooring, travertine & glass tile, exposed wooden beams, hand-painted wood graining throughout library, modern gourmet kitchen, plenty of closets and two master suites all make this historic home PERFECT for your special occasion!

One of two Master Suites located on street level, second master suite located on third floor along with two (2) other bedrooms. Master Suite #1 is a private garden flat turned into a decadent Master Suite. A one bedroom, one bath with sitting area and kitchenette are perfect for the bride & groom, older guests wishing to limit the climbing of stairs or anyone who wishes extra privacy. Master Suite #1 with original brick flooring & exposed original wooden beams boasts a romantic, queen-size 4 poster mahogany bed with lavish bedding, coal-burning fireplace, TV and 'His' and 'Her' closets. The bathroom features travertine and glass tile throughout, a double-stall shower, 100% cotton towels and spa products. This suite, formally an art studio, offers access to the home's private courtyard as well as a front door accessing the street, Oglethorpe Avenue. Also includes a spacious sitting area with TV which can accommodate a queen-size air mattress. Adjacent is the kitchenette offering a side-by-side refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, dish/glassware, stacked washer & dryer and coffee bar. Master Suite #2 boasts 14-foot ceilings, a masculine king-size bed, coal-burning fireplace, a Venetian chandelier, TV and private access to upper veranda. True to historic homes, the Master Bath is located across the hall from the Master Suite. Enter through a double set of French doors and the amenities are bountiful: a double vanity with raised sinks, double stall, glass enclosed shower, private commode with mirrored pocket door and separate master closet. Closet has plenty of built-ins to make you feel right at home! Laundry closet is adjacent to master closet and offers stacked washer & dryer. Bedroom #3 offers guests a set of twin beds, a french-style Venetian chandelier, 14-foot ceilings, and breathtaking views with floor-to-ceiling windows. Bedroom #4 offers private access to the veranda, 14-foot ceilings and a queen size bed with luxurious linens. Bedrooms 3 & 4 share a full bath with tub/shower combo and skylight for added natural light.

The second story of the house is where you'll find the main living area. The gourmet kitchen was recently added a few years back and offers modern convenience for the kitchen enthusiasts. Fully furnished with side-by-side refrigerator, electric range/oven combo, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, blender, pots and pans along with dishware. An intimate seating area is offered in the kitchen and a larger area can be found in the formal dining room. A Venetian chandelier, exposed wooden beams, and gold leaf accents make for a splendid dining experience. The family room's piece de resistance is the 800 lb. Carrara marble mantle. Floor-to-ceiling windows, 12 inch heart-of-pine panel floors and hand-painted plaster walls make this one breathtaking & relaxing experience. A flat panel TV along with over-sized seating are bonus features to this stately room. Adjacent is a library offering a plethora of novels for the guests...but please leave them behind so future guests can enjoy the reading material. The library alone took nearly 6 months during the renovation. Note the wood grain has been hand-painted using various types of wood found in homes of this era, floor-to-ceiling built-in bookcases throughout, french doors and a hand-painted ceiling to reflect aged leather. In addition to catching up on your favorite novel, this room offers a private escape for two guests who would utilize an auto inflate/deflate queen-sized air mattress. The air mattress sits at the same height as a bed on a frame and are quite comfortable with deluxe linens provided.

The home offers breathtaking views from the covered wraparound porches and veranda. Enjoy breakfast on the veranda, listen to the church bells, the clippy clap of horse-drawn carriages & horns blown from cargo ships in the nearby Savannah River. Fireworks can be seen from the wraparound porches during the summer months too!

Outdoor dining is plentiful with a newly added covered veranda off the gourmet kitchen. Overlook your private courtyard, enjoy views of church steeples, majestic oaks and magnolia trees as it offers a secure, grassed area for children to play. The focal point of the courtyard is a toad fountain cast in bronze. Our west coast treasure calls Savannah home now as he carefully balances himself on a lily pad while spurting water from a calla lily. A paved brick walk behind locked gate, adjacent to our paved brick driveway, allows for easy access into the home. Covered storage for bicycles, strollers, wagons, golf clubs, kayaks and much more is available behind the home.

Our private brick drive offers parking for two (2) cars or for a vehicle should you rent the main home (minus the garden flat). Should you require additional parking the home is surrounded with metered parking (10-hr metered in the lane & 2-hr metered out front). Metered parking is complimentary on the weekends and 5pm - 8am on weekdays.

This is a beautiful home, within walking distance to everything, and terribly lovely. There was plenty of room for 11 women, and the porches are perfection. I hope to return.

We (party of nine) rented the entire house for a long weekend. There was plenty of room for everybody and we especially enjoyed spending time on the back porch. The beds were very comfortable and nearly everything you can think of is provided. The firehouse next door is sometime a little noisy, but you get used to it. The location is fantastic and I can't recommend this high enough. Thanks Kathleen for a wonderful stay!

Great location with a lot of charm and character to house. Clean, well kept. Would have been nice if there was a grill to use.

We recently rented the entire property for a Girls-Getaway-Reunion-Bachelorette-Weekend with twelve women aged 25 to 35 and had a wonderful time. There was plenty of space (and bathrooms) for a dozen girls to get ready and find quiet time when necessary. More than adequate street parking for the additional cars (three). Conveniently located. Walked to everything. Recommend stopping by the owners' District Cafe and getting a chamoozie (champagne smoothie) while you are in town. Would recommend to others.

Our group of mothers and 10yo girl scouts had a blast. Perfect accommodations with plenty of room in the library for air mattresses for the girls. Located just a few doors down from the Juliette Gordon Low house. Centralized for everything you want to see in Savannah. We walked to City Market, the Cathedrals, River Walk, Lady & Sons, etc. The kitchen, pots/pans, and eating areas were plenty large for our group of 8 moms plus little girls. Of course we rented the attached garden apt as well for the 4th bedroom. I highly recommend this lovely historic home.

If location is king, then this property is the supreme ruler. My family ( 2 grown children) were fortunate enough to stay here for the New Year's holidays. The property is every bit as fantastic as the description. It is very evident that Kathleen and her husband lovingly restored this historic home and updating thoughtfully with modern conveniences. The house was charming, roomy, clean and well-equipped. Kathleen was kind, efficient and provided one of the best welcoming packages I've seen. We are frequent users of VRBO and Homeaway and this property will rank amongst the best. Love, love, love Savannah the this beautiful house. Would come back in a minute. Restaurants visited: Sapphire Grill; Alligator Soul; Elizabeth's; Local11Ten; Blowin' Smoke BBQ; Sandfly BBQ; 22 Square; Vic's On the River; A'Lure; The Public (great sandwiches); Zunzi's (even better sandwiches, but only take out, can sit outside on a warm day). All fabulous. Parker's market right behind house most convenient. Have a lavendar iced tea at the Paris Market and an ice cream at Leopold's. All less than a 5 minute walk. Thank you Kathleen. We have a wonderful time.

We stayed in this lovely historic Savannah house for our family Christmas vacation. It is charming with lots of room for a large family to enjoy a visit together. Felt like we got to walk back in time... Also wonderfully helpful was a small deli/bakery market that stays open 24/7 even on Christmas Day located only a 1/2 block from the back porch. The owners were available and attentive to all of our questions and needs. If you are wanting a historical feel to your vacation, we highly recommend it!

Used the entire house for our group & had a wonderful time. Walking distance to riverfront & in the historical district was just terrific. Well stock kitchen, although we could have used a large, tall pot to brine the turkey. It was a great gift to have sharp knives! Bed were comfortable & the house was cool during the day & warm in the evening. The porch on the 2nd floor was well used. We were a combined family getting together & the location gave all of us a chance to explore on our own. We loved all the interior touches that reminded us of just how well kept this place is. The fireplace in the family room was breath taking. We hope to be out in Savannah again and when we do, we'll be contacting you to see if the house is available. Thank you for the use of your beautiful home..

Being from Savannah, I knew that this location was the perfect home base from which to navigate all that is wonderful about this lovely city. Add to that the most comfortable accomodations, fully stocked kitchen, beautiful courtyard and balconies - like being at home. Lovely.

Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2008

About the owner: An avid lover of historic homes and a huge fan of the Historic District, my husband and I purchased this home and made it a labor of love restoring it to its original state. A mere 1.5 years and a small army of designers and contractors helped make our dream a reality. We lived in the home as our personal residence for a few years and enjoyed the convenience offered by downtown living. Our family has grown and we needed a home that afforded us an opportunity to spread out so we now want to share our pride and joy with you! Please take good care of it so we may continue to rent it for years to come!

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Have you always wanted to own a historic home? We did! Our children enjoyed growing up in the 'city' and experiencing city life. The ease of walking anywhere, playing hide and seek in the Colonial Cemetery, joining ghost tours in front of our home, the sounds of steam ships, church bells, horse-drawn carriages and so much more. Being adjacent to the country's oldest operating firehouse was phenomenal. Take a tour of the station, don't miss the photo with our home in the background and enjoy the hospitality of the men and women firefighters! These are just a few of our favorite memories of our home!
