the house was large & comfortable for our family of 9 for 3 weeks. it had 2 glaring faults- all fixable for a small amount of money. 1) it was NOT clean....stove & oven sticky with baked-on grease & grime from weeks earlier - showers & shower curtains full of mildew - mouse droppings all over the house, especially in the kitchen area & upstairs rooms. we had to do a full cleaning before we could begin to relax. 2) many windows were painted shut & others had no screens, so they could not be opened. several days the temperature made open windows vital, especially upstairs. that said, we loved castine & hope to return to the area next year.

Manager response: Jacqueline, First let me apologize that our home was not up to your standards of cleanliness and that you had issues with windows not opening. Let me assure you that we have all ready shared this issue with our property manager and are putting in place safeguards to prevent this from happening in the future. Our number one priority is to provide our guests with a clean, comfortable and economical place to stay as they enjoy everything Maine has to offer. Further more, our property manager will work with our local "handy man" to ensure that screens are installed on those windows that can be opened. Unfortunately, due to the age of the house not every window is operable. We would love to have you back next year and we look forward to ensuring you have a pleasant stay. As always, please know that our local property manager and I are available to address any issues that may arise before, during or after your stay. Sincerely, The Wheeler Family.

About: The George A. Wheeler home has been owned by the family for 150 years. George Wheeler came to Castine as the town's doctor and surgeon after the Civil War . This house served as his home and office for the remainder of his life. Since then, his family has maintained the home as a full time residence, a summer home and as a vacation home. George Wheeler was also an historian and authored several books about the history of Castine. These manuscripts can be found in the homes book cases today. The family still lovingly maintains the home today. Castine offers breathtaking water views and a great location for exploring Down East Maine.
