We stayed at Casa Zen for four days and had a wonderful time. The house is incredibly beautiful and was very clean and well taken care of. While it is intended for a larger party of guests, the two of us had a great time with the house all to ourselves. The back yard is very welcoming. We sat on the chairs and listened to the waterfall in the pool and used the binoculars to bird-watch. There is a book at the house of birds of Costa Rica as well and we had fun researching the birds we saw. The proximity to the beach is wonderful! We walked down the road for about three minutes and hit the beach of Playa Granda. The waves were perfect and we jumped on the surfboards we had rented and had a wonderful time! For a beach that is recommended in all the books and websites on Costa Rica, we were pleasantly surprised by how few people were on the beach. Hotel Bula Bula is within easy biking distance. A walk may take about ten-fifteen minutes. The kitchen at Bula Bula is fantastic. The menu is great (as is their happy hour), the staff is friendly, and if you talk to Todd (one of the owners) he will give you great advice about places to go and things to do while you're in the country. If you walk back to Casa Zen after dinner and it's dark, be prepared to do part of the walk/bike ride in pitch black as there are no lights along part of the road as you approach Casa Zen. Bring a flashlight! If you don't it's fine. We felt very safe. If you look up, you can see a sky FULL of stars. It was so beautiful. With a twenty minute walk or so (you can go through the woods or along the beach) you come to the estuary. If you'd like to go into Tamarindo -- a great little city for food, markets and ATMs -- you will need to take a water taxi. They will be there by 730 or so in the morning and run until about 430. We befriended one of the water taxi drivers -- Juan -- and we paid him to take us on an estuary tour. We saw monkeys, crocodiles and all kinds of birds! It's amazing how close this house is to so many wonderful things to do, but while you're at the house it seems so isolated. What a great combination! We had a wonderful time and I would recommend this house to anyone looking to enjoy the beaches of Costa Rica.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers.
