This was my first ever attempt at renting anything on line and it turned out to be a great experience. The pictures were accurate and there were no surprises. The home was perfect for our family of 5 sons, 3 daughter-in-laws and 5 grand children. The largest area was big enough for all of us to gather and the individual living areas made it possible for the married sons and their families to have their own space when needed The porch and lawn space was perfect for picnic dinners, botchi, football, and just chasing the younger ones around. The availability of the kayaks and dingy were a hit - even in the drizzle everyone had a time to paddle around. The home and all it's areas were spotless. Linens were plentiful, and we found that the kitchen had everything we needed. Boothbay was charming and we found public conservation land for family hikes / walks that everyone enjoyed. Osprey and a seal were spotted and the rocky coast with the inlets are always scenic. The roads were hilly with virtually no shoulders so I would not recommend planning on biking in the immediate area with younger ones. The owner was friendly and receptive to my many inquires - it felt as if I was talking to my neighbor, or a friend. He was extremely helpful and was quickly available to answer our questions when we first arrived. We all felt welcomed and that his home was ours during our time there. This was our first attempt at gathering the whole grown family under one roof and everyone agreed it was a success.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

We rented this house with three families, including four children, ages 2-8. The house itself is great as it is set up in four separate apartments, so we could be together, but still have our own space. The kids loved the maze-like atmosphere of the house. The yard is great for sitting out and playing yard games. However, when we arrived, we were very disappointed to see that the house is on a very busy road which was a concern with the young kids. The road is in between the house and the cove so even though the view is great, the fast-moving cars are noisy and disrupt the view. The traffic noise was also an issue at night with the windows open. Southport is a fantastic place to visit and we loved spending every day at Hendrick's Head Beach and visiting Boothbay and the Botanical Gardens. I recommend this location for the unique house set up and attentive owner, just be prepared to hear the cars!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers.
Owner response: In the 12 years that we have been renting , no one has raised the issues that appear in this review. The VRBO website contains an aerial view of the location that clearly shows the relative proximity of the house, the road, and the cove. Therefore this should not have been a surprise. Additional photos on the website show the large garden area that is bounded on the road side by a fence, thus providing a safe and expansive playing area which has always been utilized by renters and their children, as has also been acknowledged in the review. The concern about traffic and associated noise is a surprise. Southport Island ( 6 mi by 2 mi ) is a rural coastal community whose population grows in the summer time as all Maine coastal communities do. This is a residential community with one general store, a couple of Inns, a couple of restaurants, no entertainment centers, a single ring road, and a traffic pattern that ebbs and flows through the course of the day with very little activity after 5 pm. Additionally, the bridge that connects the Island to the mainland, opens for boats on the half hour, which results in car waiting lines, which when released would give the uninitiated the impression that wow ! there is a lot of traffic on Southport....this is not the case. In summary, Southport is not in the back of beyond, remote and inactive. Neither is it I-95. It is simply an area that takes on a new life in the summer, active and alive, and people still keep their windows open at night.

We had four adults in our party and stayed for a week. The property was spacious, clean, well furnished, modern and comfy. It was truly home away from home. The yard is incredibly beautiful and the water view is awesome. There is a large parking area, and great gas grills in the picnic area. The location was excellent--easy access to restaurants and shopping. We had a great time exploring the area by bike and car. The house has easy internet access. This is an excellent rental central to everything and quiet too. I highly recommend it!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children.

We have stayed at this home for two seasons and will return. It is an excellent place to rest and relax, and close to many wonderful sights and venues to enjoy. The access to wifi, TV enable guests to stay connected and enjoy their favorite entertainments. It is clean and comfortable. The owners Inder and Jane are a delight to know and personally interact with their guests making you welcome from the beginning to the end of your stay. We give it the highest recommendation possible in every way. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we have.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing.

We found the accomodations very suited to our neeeds. Each unit was self sufficient & unit ! was big enough to have a party for 30 people when weather dictated it had to be held indoors. The Cheema's are excellent landlords.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

Between the character, accommodations, cleanliness, location, hospitality, and the amenities; this place is PERFECT! The owners take great pride in their property and go above and beyond making the guests feel at home! The views from the wrap around porch, skylights and balconies are breath taking. The use of the kayaks and the private dock were a bonus! This property made the Maine experience authentic and cozy. Our extended family occupied the entire house and it was so wonderful to be together, nevertheless, the privacy of the separate units were a nice balance and boundary to our overall peace and happiness during our vacation. The owners are from the area and live near by. Their suggestions for favorite local "hot spots" were right on and they were always available for questions by means of email, a phone call, or face to face. Our family visited Boothbay for a wedding, and as I visited friends staying in and around town, I felt bad that our living situation was so far superior to theirs, not to mention less expensive! Not only would I recommend this property to my friends and relatives, I would return myself!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

We've had the absolute pleasure at staying at Coveside twice. Once we rented the house for our wedding guests and the other time we rented the house for a family reunion. Both times worked out perfectly. The house itself is incredibly comfortable in a wonderful location. It has a great view and has lobster dinner waiting for you at Robinsons walking distance away. Inder and Jane, the owners, are very welcoming and accommodating. Southport Island might just be one of the best places on earth with Boothbay playing a supporting role. If you're looking for a no-hassle, relaxing vacation spot, Coveside is perfect!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, people with disabilities.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: We are Jane and Inder Cheema, retired from ExxonMobil in 2000, and settled in Southport because when we were working we lived mostly overseas, so needed a home base which was found on Southport in 1978; it has been our home ever since. We are both immigrants...Jane from Canada, and Inder from Kashmir, India.
Why the Owner Chose Southport:
Close to where we live on Southport, and seemed a good retirement project.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Away from the hustle and bustle of Boothbay Harbor, but close enough to enjoy what it has to offer if desired. Situated by a cove which affords safe boating/kayaking, but also access to variety of adjoining interior and open ocean waterways.
