South Thomaston house description
This architect-designed passive-solar, Cape style home sits on a private, waterfront lot that offers a wide and unobstructed view of a vastly interesting saltwater estuary. Inside, the furnishings are an elegant blend of antique English and comfortable modern furniture. Downstairs is oak hardwood flooring with oriental rugs, the second is mostly carpeted. The downstairs master bedroom is extremely spacious, has a King-sized bed, sitting room, large closets and high speed internet access. The adjacent full bath also contains a stacked front load washer/dryer for your convenience. The Great Room has Living at one end and Dining on the other, with a handsomely crafted gas fireplace placed between. Large windows and sliding glass doors provide uncluttered and wide views across the deck and to the ocean across the lawns. The adjacent, spacious kitchen with high-end stainless steel appliances, has a dramatic tray ceiling for increased height, a skylight, French doors and tiled floors
The immediate area...
As the owners of the house, we are glad to give you the benefit of our extensive local knowledge. We can guide you to sight see around the coastal villages nearby, such as Owl's Head where there are many small, almost private and isolated coves to enjoy and a dramatic light house to marvel at. Port Clyde is full of interest for trips to Monhegan Island or just to browse the marvellous general store and feast on a Haddock Sandwich at the Dip Net. There's a great lighthouse and museum in Port Clyde. Rockland has become a destination in its own right recently, having endlessly fascinating shops, world class restaurants, the astonishing mile long walk right into the ocean along the Break-Water and the Farnsworth Museum with Wyeth and Winslow Homer masterpieces. Spruce Head is a part of the South Thomaston township and offers a sweet village, coves from which to launch a kayak, and a variety of places to walk and marvel at the sparkling blue water we locals take too much for granted.
Some day trips...
Depending on your interests, we would encourage you to drive to the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden down in East Boothbay where it's easy to spend a day appreciating the plants and shrubs that thrive in our coastal climate when encouraged by the skill and artistry of the world class landscapers there.
You could take a day ferry to Vinalhaven from Rockland and spend some fascinating hours browsing around some parts of that island.
A trip to Maine isn't complete until you've been to Acadia National Park, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours north of South Thomaston.
Something quite remarkable about the taste of fresh lobster. The closer you can get to the fishermen the lower the price you have to pay and the better the quality. We can tell you where to go to make some good deals. And right in the South Thomaston area are two fine outdoor Lobster/Crabmeat Restaurants, tantalizingly located right at the water's edge.
There are an infinite number of really good restaurants in our area:- Primo's, Amalfi's, Cafe Miranda, The Craignair at Clark Island, The Thomaston Cafe, Brown Bag, Second Read and then there's Dorman's for the essential Ice Cream.

- This house sits on Hayden Point, a peninsula surrounded by the salt-water estuary of the Keag River. The river is a Kayaker's Heaven, with a gentle current and an amazing variety of Sea-life from harbor seals to endangered Bald Eagles. Almost four years old, this traditional Cape Cod house will provide you an easy embarcation point from which to slide our 2 ocean kayaks, that are included in the rent, into the estuary to explore the natural beauty of the river. Set on lush lawns, 50' back from its own sea-wall, the house enjoys wide, private and unobstructed views of the ocean. There are two decks, one perched on the edge of the sea-wall that's great for cocktails and one off the rear of the house. Across the cove there is a public boat ramp, also a favorite place for locals to try their luck at catching Stripers. Rockland is a 5 minute drive and offers world class restaurants and art galleries, including the famous Farnsworth Museum offering many Wyeth and Winslow Homer works. ...moreless

Wow! Having stayed at many rentals, this is home has the top spot for us! Quiet out of the way neighborhood. It has a safe secure feel. Lovely grounds with incredible views of the river. Very close to town. LARGE beautiful rooms from kitchen to bedrooms. Lots of glass. Comfortable beds. Big spacious bathrooms. The kitchen has everything we could possibly want for cooking meals and baking. Never have I seen such a well stocked kitchen in a rental. We stayed with another couple and never felt crowded. A beautiful place made for relaxing. We absolutely loved it! The owners are wonderful people who went out of their way to ensure we had all the local knowledge printed out for us as to places to eat and visit. I really hated to leave. I smiled all the time. Well done owners! You didn't miss a trick with this fabulous rental on the mid-coast. Your attention to detail is second to none. Should you choose to rent this fabulous home, you will not regret your choice. Thanks guys, we can't wait to come back!

Owner response: What a wonderful review. Thank you very much, John and Kate
We have been vacationing in ME for the last 6 years. This was by far our most perfect stay. John and Kate were excellent hosts.. In fact they were extremely helpful in planning our kayaking trips. Their home is clean, comfortable and relaxing. The layout of the house makes it perfect for 2 couples to share. The kitchen was a joy to cook in. We are avid kayakers and the location of this home close to the Muscle Ridge Islands made it our favorite place in ME!

This was our first trip to Maine and had an amazing vacation during our weeklong stay. We were minutes from Rockland, and a short drive to Camden, public beaches, hiking and vineyards; there certainly was no shortage of things to do. We spent several days just relaxing at the beautiful home, while reading a book or lounging on the hammock. Our group consisted of 4 adults and 7 month old baby, and the house was more than accomodating. John and Kate greeted us at the house on our arrival to ensure our stay was as comfortable as if we were in our own home. They were very kind and we look forward to visiting south thomaston again in the future.

This is our first time using HomeAway, and I hope that every owner is as wonderful as John and Kate! The house was amazing! We loved it. My husband and I brought our 11 year old and the house and location could not have been more perfect. So many fun things to do only minutes away, as well as, right there at the house. We thank you both for giving us a lifetime of memories in beautiful Maine!

We have been vacationing in Maine since the children(who now have children of their own) were very young. Having rented a variety of places to stay, we have a good idea of what to expect in a vacation rental. The setting, the owners attention to our comfort, spotlessness and lovely decor far exceeded any expectations we had of our week here. We even decided to spend more time relaxing in this peaceful place and not attend several of the many activities of the Rockland/Thomaston area. Thank you Kate and John. We hope to return in the future!

A perfect week in Maine!
A perfect week in Maine!
We returned to Maine after a week of sailing off the coast because we had a wedding to attend in the area. My husband and I came with our grown daughter and we had more than enough space. The house was clean, well-maintained, open, airy, and was decorated simply but tastefully. Kate's beautiful gardens surround the house. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed and it felt large and lovely to cook in. The friendly and helpful owners provided invaluable information about typical things like restaurants but also where to gather the freshest, most delicious mussels! They were especially kind to leave 5 lobsters from their own traps for us when we arrived. We made great use of the two sea kayaks they had, a real plus for anyone who likes paddling along the Maine coast - an experience both invigorating and peaceful beyond words. The house has two decks, one immediately in back of the house perfect for relaxing and eating, and another very small one perched right on the edge of property overlooking the inlet - sublime for cocktails. We had a mix of weather but enjoyed all of it. The recommended restaurants were excellent. We had a wonderful outing to Owl's Head where there are spectacular views and our daughter could indulge her love of photography. We'd recommend this house to just about anyone with confidence.

Spotless, Comfortable and Beautiful
Hi Kate and John, Your house is wonderful, most important is that it was spotless, I felt comfortable as soon as I walked in. The kitchen is well equipped and it was nice to have the spices, those are hard to buy for a week and are helpful to have when you don't want to eat out every meal. The layout of the house is great and I loved all the windows although the shades and I didn't get along so well. For some the small TV might be an issue, but it was too beautiful outside to watch TV, we didn't turn it on all week. Overall your house is very nice and comfortable and clean and the help and suggestions for things to do and places to see were great!
