Spanish Wells house description
Main Beach Cottage Description
This charming beach front cottage was built in 2005 with family activities in mind. The layout provides ample space for large family gatherings and, conversely, offers multiple areas for kids to play and adults to relax. A large portion of the first floor faces the beach and has an open design where the kitchen, dining area and family room flow together creating a spacious great room. The first floor also has a bedroom, full bathroom with shower and separate laundry area for added convenience. An extra wide staircase, leading to the upstairs, has hand rails positioned at two different heights for the safety of adults and small children.
A fun atmosphere abounds on the second floor. Kids love playing on the swing, the wall to wall suspended netting, and the rope ladder that leads to a 200 square foot loft that can be built into a formidable fortress. The second floor also has a master bedroom and a bunkroom, each opening to a balcony deck with incredible views of the ocean. Both bedrooms have a private bathroom with double pedestal sinks and a deep soaker tub. The master bedroom has a king size bed and the bunk room has two sets of built-in bunk beds. Also on the second floor are two semi private sleeping areas. One area is situated with two twin beds and the other area has a twin bed with a DVD player.
Much of the furniture in the cottage was hand crafted out of salvaged material from local ship wrecks and the artwork throughout was done by Michael Cashmore Hingley, whose artwork is featured on numerous buildings throughout Spanish Wells. The cottage is appointed with all of the needed amenities; broad band wireless internet access, Vonage phone service for free calls to/from the US, cable TV, DVD player, flat screen TVs, base station marine radio, washer, dryer, microwave, dishwasher, stove, oven, refrigerator with ice dispenser/water and six- zone climate control for ultimate comfort throughout the entire cottage.
Comfort and convenience continues in the outdoor living areas. The covered, ocean side deck, running the entire width of the cottage, has Adirondack chairs and indirect lighting that is perfect for nighttime viewing of passing cruise ships and star gazing. Steps from the ocean side deck and a wooden walkway lead to an outdoor shower on the side of the cottage. This is the first stop for most guests returning from the beach where they can enjoy a clean rinse with welcoming hot and cold water. The covered porch on the inland side also runs the entire width of the cottage. A barbeque grill is located on this porch, which is convenient to the kitchen and assures untimely afternoon showers won’t interrupt dinner preparation. The adjacent lower level deck, with chaise lounges, is a nice, protected alternative if the wind is blowing hard out of the North or East.
The property spills onto a spectacular sandy beach with crystal clear, shallow, safe, warm water. The beach is protected by beautiful barrier coral reefs which tame large waves and prevent dangerous rip tides. The warm, calm water provides endless hours of entertainment for the whole family, to include snorkeling and fishing. There is a fish cleaning table with running water near the water’s edge, making it convenient to quickly clean any fish that are caught. If just hanging out and relaxing is your thing you will enjoy the hammock that is shaded by palm trees and cooled by ocean breezes.
Situated on 12th Street, the cottage location on Spanish Wells is ideal and is within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, churches and grocery stores.
Optional Guest Cottage
A recently added guest cottage on the property is now available for rent in conjunction with main beach house rental. This nicely appointed two-level guest cottage offers an additional bedroom with king-size bed plus two bathrooms (one with an indoor shower and the other with a private outdoor shower). The guest cottage also includes a kitchen, dining room and living room and would be perfect for grandparents, aunts, uncles or friends of your family. The cottage is for adults only with a max of two occupants. The nightly charge for the guest cottage is $150 per night and it is only available to those renting the main beach house or the property owners.

It's just what we were looking for. Out of the way, no nightlife, beautiful views and the best beach on the island. The house is comfortable and everything works well. Rent a boat and cart from Johnny Underwood. If you are not familiar with using a boat in these shallow waters,,,be very cautious around the NorthWest and NorthEast parts of the island. It can be very shallow at low tide and areas that appear to be deep water are in fact grass. Use caution until you get used to the lay of the land,,keep the lower end trimmed up if in doubt. Sound often. Drink the water out of the 5 gallon containers. Water is cheap. About $1.00/gallon. The city water that comes out of the tap,,taste brackish . Food is expensive. Fish for your food. Be careful of the Cuda's around the abandoned fish farm at the end of Russle island. They will steal your Snapper. Bring #2 hooks and good steel leaders. Use Squid or cut-bait. Berr is expensive. See Budda . There isn't any local phone service. I don't know why. No big deal. I would go back in a minute. If you want night life,,,go on a cruise. If you want to fish or read a book, come here.

Owner response: Mark - Thanks for the great review and helpful boating/fishing tips. I'm glad you and your party enjoyed our property and the island. Your comments about the water on the island are accurate. The tap water doesn't taste good but is suitable for cooking, washing, showers and laundry. Thankfully, Spanish Wells has services that use reverse osmosis systems to produce high quality drinking water at a very reasonable price. ($5 for a 5 gallon jug) For our guest's convenience we have a pump system that automatically supplies the refrigerator with water from the jug. This enables the refrigerator to dispense chilled drinking water and ice. Regarding phone service on the island - there is local land line phone service available throughout the island, however, as you experienced, we don't have a local phone in the cottage and most public phone booths on the island are disconnected. As we discussed while you were there, the Vonage phone in the cottage is available to guests for free calls to and from the US. Local calls on the Vonage phone are actually long distance so we encourage our guests to limit those - but if the need arises we understand and accept use of the phone for those circumstances. I'm glad you would "come back in a minute" and look forward to your return in the future. Sincerely, Joe B
Exceeded all expectations!!"
Exceeded all expectations!!"
Our experience in Spanish Wells and this house exceeded my entire family’s expectations and that is saying a lot when you have four kids ranging from 10-23. The island itself is memorable for many reasons -- the sheer beauty of the sand and water, the laid back feeling of the island, the friendly locals, the lack of crowds and this wonderful home - What a fantastic place! The house is spacious and comfortable, great little touches like books and tips and clean, clean, clean! We immediately felt at home and then some. In addition we had a great welcome and helpful information from the property manager. • The location is unreal!! I know there are many pictures on the website and lots of great reviews but regardless word and picture cannot do it justice. I can’t recall the last trip I went on that by the end I wasn’t ready to go home, but in Spanish Wells I could have stayed for weeks and not be ready to leave. Will we return? We booked next year before we left! Go and enjoy, but promise not to share this wonderful little secret with too many people…

Owner response: Keith - thank you for the positive review. I'm glad you were pleased with the condition of the property. My caretaker, Johnny, and I appreciate that vacation time is precious and we do everything possible to ensure that you and your family have what is needed for an enjoyable vacation. I have children, nephews and nieces that span your children's ages. They too really enjoy the fun and freedom that Spanish Wells offers and they always are eager to return to the island for our next vacation. Thank you for choosing our beach cottage again for your family vacation next summer - we really appreciate and value our repeat guests!
Perfect Beachfront Property
Perfect Beachfront Property
Everything about our visit to Spanish Wells was perfect - the house, the location, the island, everything! The house and beach are exactly as pictured on the web site - picture perfect! The house is just steps from the beach and is equipped with everything you need. The house has tons of charm and is very well maintained and was very clean when we arrived. While there we enjoyed snorkeling, fishing, swimming, boating and cruising around the island on a golf cart. We visited the new restaurant, the Ship Yard several times. It is in a great location to sit outside and have dinner and the food was delicious. The islanders were all very nice and helpful. Spanish Wells was the perfect place to relax. I would most definetely recommend it to anyone.

Owner response: Tim and Margaret - thank you for the positive review. My caretaker deserves much of the credit for the condition of the cottage. As you know Johnny was born and raised on the island. He takes much pride in maintaining the property and tending to the needs of our guests so that everyone that visits enjoys his beautiful island. I have heard from many that the new restaurant, The Shipyard, is a hit. I checked it out before it open this summer and agree that it's location and outdoor dining options are ideal. I'm very excited to go there myself on my next visit. I hope you are able to come back to our cottage again in the near future. Sincerely, Joe

Thanks for great time!
Gents - we just arrived back in Toronto. I wanted to thank you both for helping create a memorable holiday for our family. The house provided an authentic beach cottage experience with all the great amenities. Our girls loved the bunk bed setup and spent countless hours playing on the netting. I hope to come back soon! The highlights of our trip in no particular order: - Johnny's fresh Wahoo steak - best fish ever - sand bar at low tide and amazing shells - location of house couldn't be better (best part of beach) - Bernards fish shack at 4:00 - Glass bridge - Gaulding Cay - driving a golf cart everywhere and not requiring a car -renting a 22ft seapro and having lunch on egg island on a deserted beach Feel free to post this review to your site. Sincerely, Tom

Relaxing vacation in Spanish Wells
Relaxing vacation in Spanish Wells
We just had a lovely relaxing week. We were a family of 5, my husband and I, our two teenage children (14 and 18) and my father. The house was perfect - lots of charm, clean and plenty of space to spread out. My Dad had his own bedroom and bathroom downstairs. Outside shower is great! I recommend that people bring food. We froze up dinners, burgers, chicken, etc and had no problem bringing it onto the island in cooler bags - we checked the luggage in Boston and it was still frozen solid in Eleuthra. The Food Fair had all the staples but the meat is much better from the US and the restaurants are limited. We have been to many islands but the beach in front of the house is the nicest we have seen and the water was heavenly - clear and warm. Johnny (the caretaker) was terrific. We rented a 6 person golf cart from him for the week which gave us lots of freedom to explore Spanish Wells and Russell Island. We also rented a boat for three days (again from Johnny) - a highlight of the trip. We took it to Egg Island and to reefs off of Eleuthra for snorkeling and fishing. Definitely recommend exploring on the water but only if you have experience with boats as the waters can be tricky to navigate. The flats in front of the house are great for bonefishing, though it is apparently very difficult to land one! We had concerns that February might not be warm enough but it was plenty warm - 80-85 degrees all week. We had read on-line that the locals don't like tourists and are unfriendly. This is definitely not the case. Everyone was friendly and very helpful. The island is small enough that you quickly get to know everyone. All in all, a very enjoyable vacation and a great house. I would recommend this house/island for those who can make their own entertainment, like water activities, and are looking for a relaxing time with family.

Owner response: Thank you for the informative and positive review. I’m glad you and your family enjoyed the island and our beach cottage. My caretaker and I understand that vacation time is precious and we try to do all we can to ensure you have a good time. I think your recommendation to bring frozen meat and food items is good. Although, as you note, the Food Fair has all the staples you would likely need, it’s restocked just once a week so they may be sold out of the items your want. I have also found it is not difficult to transport food items through the Bahamas, with the exception of fresh fruit and vegetables; they are prohibited by Bahamas Customs. I appreciate your testimonial and recommendation to other travelers to stay at my beach cottage. I hope you are able to come back soon.
Wonderful Family Getaway
Wonderful Family Getaway
We spent a wonderful family vacation at Palm 22. It was the perfect spot for us right on the beach. The water was warm, calm and shallow enough for the 2 year olds to be able to walk out quite far. It was too shallow for adults to swim (unless you walked out quite far) but if you have small children it's a trade off I'm willing to make. The beach rarely had anyone else on it and we were able to walk the beach all the way to Russell Island. It was fun to take the kayak out, but if you're looking to see ocean creatures, you'll find plenty at low tide by heading right down the beach towards the point. We saw conch, sea stars, sponges, urchins, sand dollars, birds, sea anemones and an octopus. The house was great for our needs. We liked having the 3 bathrooms and the outdoor shower was an added bonus. I did let the owners know that it would be helpful to have some rails on the bunk beds and a rail on the balcony that wouldn't let children squeeze through, but we jsut kept the doors to the balcony locked. The swing and loft were great for indoor play and helped when we needed some inside time and on rainy days. The cottage has lots of books for young and old, great porches, a washer and dryer and it's rustic charm reminded us of our cottage in the north of Canada. The location is central to everything, but with small children we decided to rent a golf cart. It was helpful when getting groceries, exploring Spanish Wells and Russell Island, going for drives and when we spent the morning at the public beach. We rented the golf cart from Johnny Underwood who is the hard working caretaker for the property. He went out of his way to make our stay enjoyable. He got us life jackets for all 4 children, his wife brought us some sand toys and when the fridge quit on us, he was able to bring in a new one the next morning. He has lived on the island all his life and can tell you pretty much any thing you want to know. As others have said, Spanish Wells is not a place to find exciting night life (though sitting on the porch watching a thunder storm roll in, cruise ships go by or the stars come out are all pretty high up on my list of great night time entertaiment) it is a place to relax in a beautiful and warm tropical setting. Least fav thing - not a lot of fresh/healthy food. And expensive. We are considering returning and Palm 22 is the best rental choice for our family. Joe was also very responsive to all of our questions, suggestions and concerns.

We love this island and this rental...
We love this island and this rental...
"We love this island and this rental has got to be the best property on it. The house has a kazillion beds and is a kid's dream castle, but was perfect for we 4 adults. The house is very comfortable, but with fine decorations that take it a level well above the usual or bland rental. Lots of sofas on which to drouse after a long beach walk, tv, internet, great porches, immediate access to a stunningly beautiful beach. We could walk or bike everywhere; glad we didn't rent a golf cart. Local residents are invariably friendly and will go out of their way to be helpful. They aren't doing it for tips. Seems to be a genuine welcoming tradition where everyone knows everybody and it's not long before many of them know you. We were there in Jan-Feb for just a few days. We are coming back in June for 10 days to see if Northern executive types can really adjust to island serenity. We plan to try real hard. PS: Some specifics: Its a very clean, well appointed rental on a good sized lot with privacy that really is on the beach, with a property manager who met us at the dock when we landed, took us to the house, and checked back several times to see how we were doing. No hesitation: this is a really fine rental. As to life on the island, come here to decompress. No amusement parks, no casinos, few restaurants, no nightlife. It's beach and water, fish and reefs. Better than BVI or US VI, or Turks and Caicos, or Sanabel, or Outer Banks, or even the Jersey Shore. We ate fresh seafood or grilled steaks, eating out just a couple of times. The kitchen is well stocked with dishware, utensils, basic condiments, spices, olive oil, etc.. (And has a dishwasher.) We packed as much food into our suitcases as we could (coffee, cereal, crackers, pasta, etc.) because island prices are high. There is a Food Fair (I think that's the name) grocery store that stocks what you're likely to want, except for fresh produce, which was pretty awful. On balance, we might not bring so much food next time, although bringing as much as you can with you seems to be the prevalent strategy. Airlines make this harder with stringent overweight charges. On the other hand, about all you need for clothes are shorts, sandals, and some sun coverings. It's not dressy there, so you should have room left in the suitcase for some food. Bottom line: We had an outstanding time."

What a wonderful location and island. Great house and the island is full of friendly people. We were there 10 days and never got island fever, and are already planning to go back. It is NOT a tourist trap and was a wonderful place to relax and walk on the beach.

Third time at 22 Palms -
Over the last three years our family has rented this wonderful cottage, first for a large family vacation and twice more with a few friends..you cannot find a better island to visit and this is the perfect place to enjoy the most of Spanish Wells. The house is large and airy and very clean with lots of space to spread out if a large group. Even for two people it is great. The write up and pictures do a good job of explaining but you will not believe your eyes when you visit in person. Thank you to the owners for a fantastic experience.

Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: Family man with a beautiful wife and 3 wonderful children, avid outdoors man, loving anything to do with water, 30+ years in the technology field in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US. Picture above was taken in Spanish Wells in 2010. I was holding dinner for 5.
Why the Owner Chose Spanish Wells:
A long time friend invited me and my family to stay at his beach house in Spanish Wells. We went in April, 2010 and had a wonderful time snorkeling, fishing, beachcombing, building sand castles, riding bikes, watching the sunset, having ice cream, grilling what we caught spear fishing and relaxing. It was incredible and my kids still tell others that it was the BEST vacation ever. I've challenged them on their declaration but they say the trip to Spanish Wells was better than the Atlantis, Disney World, Caribbean Cruises and all of our beach trips on the east coast. I know it's hard to believe but it's the truth! As a family we were not in a rush to get to nor distracted by any of the commercial offerings that are typical of vacation destinations. Spanish Wells is not commercialized at all; rather it is beautiful, safe, and the islanders are very accommodating. I too enjoyed this vacation immensely so I spent the last day of our vacation looking at real estate. When my friend learned that I was interested in buying a place on the island he offered me part ownership of the beach house. We have closed the deal and are now offering a limited number of rentals to help offset expenses.
