As former frequent visitors to the FL keys, we spent a lot of time looking for the perfect house to re-start a yearly Keys vacation tradition. We wanted a place large enough to accommodate a couple of families at the same time, that would allow us to dock a couple boats (mine is a 28' Contender) and provide access to all our previous fishing and diving spots, and features to keep the kids occupied. We found all of this and more in the Tarpon House. Jim and Elizabeth, the owners, are not only great rental managers, but excellent hosts as well. They made sure everything in the place was as good or better than expected. They were also available for local advice and help with any questions. Thanks Jim and Elizabeth! The area is very quiet and relaxing. The house itself is set up very nicely for multiple families vacationing together with enough room and space for some privacy. The pool area and tiki bar provides a resort-like atmosphere. Night fishing on the dock provided hours and hours of entertainment for the kids. The underwater light attracts unbelievable amounts of fish at night The keys are known for shallow water and low bridges and I spent a lot of time researching the area to make sure we wouldn’t have problems with our boat. Some Information for boat owners that may save you some time if you are doing the same research: The main canal opens to both the bay and the ocean and we navigated both with our 28’ Contender. I wouldn’t bring a boat too much bigger than ours as the low tides leave only about 2 feet of water at the canal entrance on the bay side (which is the deeper end) and the canal is fairly narrow in places. The ocean side provides quicker access to open water but outside the canal is tricky and very shallow at low tides. There is a bridge on the ocean side but plenty of clearance (12+ ft.) even at high tide. The bay is no problem to run on a plane but you definitely want to stay in the channel and spend some time learning the area at high tide. The fishing was spectacular. We caught plenty of dolphin and even got our first sailfish. Looe Key is an easy run and we lucked into some of the clearest water I have ever seen in the keys. There is a Marina on Sugarloaf but it is on the west side of the highway and bridge clearance is only 7-8 feet. We bought our bait there, but for gas there are two marinas on Cudjoe key nearby. In summary, this is a really great place and we’ll be back!

Awesome Family Vacation
Awesome Family Vacation
Our family of six stayed at the Tarpon House over Easter Break this year and had an absolute blast. Our four teenagers were constantly occupied either kayaking, snorkeling in the canal, swimming in the pool, laying out on the rooftop sundeck, or fishing right off the dock. The home was very clean and well laid out for a family our size. A second couple with kids could have easily fit with plenty of space leftover. The downtairs apartment is a very nice asset for couples traveling with parents, or in our case, teenage daughters quarters. The well-maintained property appears to sit on a double lot, so there was plenty of space. The property is very private as it sits on a corner lot overlooking native vegetation and the view from the rooftop deck is spectacular. In the evening, the house has an underwater light in the canal that attracts many snapper and tarpon. My 13 year old son caught his first Tarpon right off the dock the first night. Over the course of the week, we continued to catch Tarpon up to 45lbs. right off the dock, as well as more mangrove snapper than we could count. We also rented a boat for the week and were also able to catch a few Tarpon right out along the oceanfront. The house is the last house on the canal before you get to the ocean. While the boys were fishing during the day, the girls took day trips to Key West, shopping, parasailing, shopping, and visiting the beach. Did I mention shopping. It's a very short drive to Key West from Sugarloaf. A visit to The Square Grouper restaurant for dinner is a must. Great food and atmosphere. The owners of the home were very easy to deal with and were very helpful. Try the Hogfish Grill on Stock Island. Thanks for the tip Jim! We are all looking forward to visiting the Tarpon House again! Close to Key West yet secluded
Close to Key West yet secluded
We have vacationed in several places in the FL keys and this place is by far the best. We will definitely return year and year. Most appealing are the quit secluded location, open canal and undeveloped mangrove areas that provides fantastic views from the upper deck. In addition, the easy access to Looe Key marine reserve is great for some of the best SCUBA diving and snorking in the Keys.
