Why the Owner Chose Kilauea
We liked the small town, rural charm of Kilauea, the fact we could walk to the Kilauea bakery for a pesto biali or macadamia nut sticky bun or coconut pastry in the morning. The first couple years we had the house there was a bakery in Kilauea called Jacques of Kauai. They had the best rye molasses bread! Hurricane Iniki shut Jacques of Kauai down forever, but we still remember how good that bread was and it was a good part of the appeal of Kilauea for us.
There are no hotels or condos in Kilauea, and we liked that. We were really close to our favorite beaches: Kalihiwai, Secret, Anini and Rock Quarry are just a few short minutes drive from the house. If we forget something for our BBQ or picnic at the beach, it is never a problem to drive back home for matches or whatever! My daughter loves her morning runs to the Kilauea Lighthouse, and my daughter and I both enjoy checking out the shops in the Kong Lung center. We like to hit the farmers' markets in all the towns, but having one right in Kilauea on Saturday mornings is really nice. The family really loves the abundant crops we get from the avocado, mango and lychee trees. We used to let the coconuts ripen, it is has gotten too dangerous since the trees are so large now. We have them trimmed before they start dropping.
We like being not that far from our favorite north shore haunts (Ke'e Beach, Tunnels Beach, Hanalei) and still only 20 minutes to Kapa'a.
The Unique Benefits at this House
What is special about Kilauea Coconut House is that it is not a condo, but a full sized house. It has a kitchen equipped far beyond what you would ever expect in a vacation rental. The bed sheets are of extra nice quality--all 300 thread count (or higher) and 100% cotton. No polyester blends in this house! Two features that are a little hard to find in other rentals are the spa (and it is an extra large one) and a fireplace, which is actually a pretty nice and cozy thing to have in December and January. If you are fortunate to hit the right seasons, you will have an abundance of avocados ripen during your stay (maybe hundreds!) The lychees are exquisite and we have had bumper crops of those in late May and early June. Mangos are ripe in July. The spacious great room is a plus. It is 20 feet x 40 feet with a high vaulted ceiling. If your party is large, you won't feel crowded at all. One of the things we really enjoyed when we first got the house is not having to find a parking spot and walk a good distance into the house, like we had at the condo in Princeville. It is so nice to just pull into the driveway, and being just steps from the front door.
Owner's Map of Kilauea
I was born and raised in Marin County, California, and have lived here my entire life, just like my husband (now sadly, an "ex") and our three children. I first visited Kauai the summer after graduation from UCSF Nursing School. Two classmates and I went to Hawaii to study for our boards. Ha! Ha! Fortunately, we all passed on the first try, in spite of this trip. A couple years later, I spent my honeymoon visiting Big Island, Maui and Kauai. A few years later, our family (which by then included a 5 year old son and a 7 year old daughter) joined Gail, whom I had known since I was 5, and her husband and their 1 and 3 year old daughters for a stay at a Princeville condo. The trip was so wonderful that our family returned the next four years, and on that last year's stay at Princeville, in 1989, I found the house in Kilauea, and with my husband's blessings, bought it.
I have operated the house as a vacation rental since 1991, with our family enjoying summers there over the years. Now that the kids are grown, and I finally have my own business, and the flexibility that goes with that, we now visit Kauai throughout the year.
In Novato, I work both as a surgical and recovery nurse for a plastic surgeon, and have my own esthetic laser (primarily hair removal) Botox and dermal filler practice in office space I rent from a urologist. I am blessed with a one mile commute from my home to my office.
My two sons still live at home. John has a degree in architecture from University of Oklahoma, but works primarily as a massage therapist and is working on prerequisites for admission to Physical Therapy school. Charlie attends Santa Rosa Junior College and is working on prerequisites, aiming to transfer to
UC Davis for Engineering.
My daughter, Torry, graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Art History. She lives in San Francisco and is a residential interior designer with Barbara Scavullo Designs. Yes, that is Torry in the spa photo.
