NortherNest is back…this favorite rental home, enjoyed by vacationers for years, is back and is better than ever. NortherNest has been thoughtfully updated and equipped to fully cater to your next relaxing & memorable Maine vacation. If you enjoyed the Nest before, you will be thrilled with your experience this season!
NortherNest is ideally located. Depending on where in the park you are headed, anywhere in Acadia National Park can be reached with a 5 to 30 minute drive. A 20 min. drive reaches the many boutique shops & restaurants in the village of Bar Harbor. A 15 min. drive will access the area’s largest grocery shopping in downtown Ellsworth, as well as an L.L. Bean outlet. These are just the immediate amenities. The list of potential daytrips from the Nest is nothing short of dizzying. The Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia, historic Castine, the gems of the Blue Hill Peninsula, all the sights & sounds of authentic fishing villages & miles of unspoiled shore Down East and stunning Campobello Island in Canada are all effortless day trips. To see it all is to live a lifetime at the Nest!
NortherNest offers comfortable and clean year-round lodging on the waters of Western Bay in Trenton, Maine. Overlooking the mountains of Acadia on Mount Desert Island, a manicured lawn surrounded by many professional gardens sweeps down to the private beach, which is without a doubt, one of the finest beaches in the Acadia area. It is also just about as “kid friendly” as beaches come in Maine. Swimming, kayaking, sunbathing & beachcombing (low tide is great fun!) do not get much better anywhere in Maine than at the Nest’s extensive gravel beach. Want a truly memorable experience? Bring your camping gear and tent out on the beach. The loons lull you to sleep & the sunrise greets you in the morning. Simply unforgettable…
Keep an eye out for loons, porpoises, seals, ospreys, great blue herons & eagles ~ all are common sights at the NortherNest beach. A flock of turkeys moved in in 2011 and can often be seen. Moose, bear, fox & deer have all also been seen at the Nest, but are more rarely seen than the other wildlife. The deck, yard and surrounding marsh bustles with the countless songbirds that Down East Maine is graced with. Red squirrels and chipmunks often scurry over our toes while gardening at the Nest. They are the true clowns of the garden! Kayakers will revel in conserved Alley Island. About a 20 min. row away, Alley Island offers a deserted, pine clad island to explore with remnants of an old farmstead and wild beaches & shore. For more experienced boaters, across Western Bay (about an hour row) there is a seal rookery on the shores of the Blagdon Preserve in Bar Harbor. Be sure to not get too close to the mother seals raising their pups. The seals need their space and they will surely come to greet you before you need to get too close to their resting rocks. The eastern views at the beach spoil you with sunrises over the mountains of Acadia, while the long, evening light warms the bay and the mountains with tones of sunset. The orange moon rising over Acadia as viewed from the Nest’s beach & deck is nothing short of spectacular. Your experiences here will last a lifetime. Well-behaved pets are most welcome at NortherNest. There is a secure, fenced dog yard just off the deck. It is a breeze to let your pooch out from the sunroom for some fresh air or a potty. The Nest’s beach is a world class Frisbee beach. Fido will not miss his daily exercise with an evening ball or Frisbee session before dinner on the day you tackle one of the park’s challenging ladder trails. The Nest is owned by dog lovers and has been crafted with convenience and comfort of your furrier family members in mind.
Eating takes a special turn for the fun at the Nest. Our beach campfire grill is the ultimate spot for a lobster shore dinner or any other campfire meal that you can conjure, for that matter. Mussels can be harvested off of our “Mussel Rock” when the tide is low. Forgot your lobster pot at home? No worries, we offer our tenants all the bells & whistles of shore dining cookery. You will pick fresh & delicious produce from our 9 organic vegetable gardens. Our gardens have been planted with specific varieties in mind to best suit our tenants’ stay. Our raspberry patch brims with fruit for most of the summer. Morning coffee on the beach is a timeless experience. After ten years of sipping coffee in the summer morning still, we still jump at every chance to do so. You will too…
The yard at NortherNest is beautifully landscaped with an abundance of perennial gardens. A water garden peacefully gurgles with goldfish & frogs as residents. Those with a green thumb will wonder at the botanical spectrum that has been compiled. The home’s owners are both certified Master Gardeners & have amassed an impressive collection of flora. All seasons offer a different feel & look. Walking through the gardens to the beach is an addiction will not want or need to break!
NortherNest can be available off-season, as well. Please call for dates & rates.
Short term rentals (3 night minimum) are o.k.off season.
Our goal is to make sure that you enjoy your stay in Down East Maine as much as we love living here. We seek to quickly re-acquire our group of repeat tenants that filled the Nest week after week for many years. We would love for you to be one of the lucky ones! If you have questions about NortherNest or our amazing area, do not hesitate to ask. As operators of a local real estate business, there is not much we don’t know about the area and we love to share our knowledge!
We look forward to seeing you at the Nest…
P.S. Let us know if a week you desire is unavailable - we will inform you of any cancellations.

My husband and I and our little dog Buddy enjoyed a magical week at Norther Nest! Every possible dream of a vacation home in Maine we found here! The view from the kitchen, the screened porch, deck and beach was amazing. The mountains of Acadia, the sunsets, the backyard garden, the flowers, the vegetables, the chipmunks, and the bird watching! Did I mention the quietness? I have a demanding and very public career and the peace and quiet was just the relaxation and rejuvenation needed. Each day we explored Mt. Desert Island and each evening hurried to get back to the Nest for a homemade dinner on the deck or porch. We also had campfires on the beach and saw some of the best starry nights in the world. Every detail was thought of by Julee and her colleagues. Pick this spot folks, you will be as thrilled as we were! Cheers!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, sightseeing, adventure seekers.

Taken from Guest Log Book: Thank you for sharing your lovely Nest with us. Our stay was wonderful right from the start! The fresh cut flowers were such a homey touch. The backyard is so peaceful and relaxing and the hummingbirds were an extra special treat! The beach was beautiful in the sun, clouds & even the rain. We have collected beautiful sea glass and a few heart shaped pebbles to bring home with us. They will always remind us of our stay here. The night sky was tremendous and we made special wishes on all the shooting stars. Thanks so much!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Taken from Guest Log Book: It was a full moon on a chilly, clear night. Me + my honey were shivering and happy. I said "Will you marry me?" and she said "Uh, YES!" (through chattering teeth). Needless to say, your beach will remain in our hearts forever.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: Julee & Pete Swanson are the proud owners of NortherNest. Julee is a local real estate business owner and Pete is an estate gardener & horticulturalist. They are avid gardeners and have several furry friends. They love to share their knowledge of the area with NortherNest guests and will gladly offer tips for fun and interesting places to go that others may miss.
Why the Owner Chose Trenton:
As a child, Julee spent all her summers in Bar Harbor and Trenton and when they saw NortherNest for sale in 2000 they jumped at the chance to purchase their own waterfront property. Coincidentally, NortherNest shares the same beach that Julee spent summers on during her youth. A very serendipitous event. After many years of vacationing at NortherNest, Pete & Julee moved to Trenton year-round in 2004 and are lucky to be able to enjoy the beauty of Acadia National Park and the surrounding area year-round.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
As a real estate agent, Julee gets to see a lot of waterfront homes and beaches. Without a doubt, NortherNest has one of the best, most friendly beaches in the area. It is truly a rare find! The location is quiet, the yard is private and the beach is lightly used by only a few other property owners. It is a great place to relax and unwind. Beach fires are fun at night and if the full moon is rising over the bay it is a special treat. On calm nights you can see bioluminesence (glow in the dark plankton) when you disturb the water. This is amazing. The night sky is a true wonder at the Nest. Kayaking from the beach is so easy and fun. There are several islands you can kayak to and there is a seal rookery across the bay. Wildlife enthusiasts and birders will be delighted by the diversity on the property. Gardeners will delight in the perennial gardens and the organic vegetables, raspberries & rhubarb are yours for the picking. Truly a special home!
