White Salmon cabin description

Note: after ten years of great times we will be listing cabin for sale this spring. Thus, at this point we have limited availability - only in early spring. Sorry for inconvenience. If things change we will open up for rentals throughout summer and fall.

Nestled right on the banks of the White Salmon river in a small community of other cabins. It's private, though not isolated - there are neighboring cabins across the river and one next door. The setting is picturesque. Accommodations are simple (rustic) but with all the basic amenities. And less than an hour and a half from Portland, ten minutes from Hood River - its hard to beat the location.

Daytime outdoor activities, dinner on the deck, and sleeping on the screened porch are our favorite things to do. The river is spring fed so it is cold all year and swift, but a quick dip on a hot day is possible. Kayaking and rafting on the river are popular (class 2-5), and there are many guided trips options in BZ or Husum. There are also ample hiking, cycling and mountain biking options including the Nestor Peak 19 mile loop trail - which you can start from the door. Trout Lake and the Gifford Pinchot are to the North with lots more recreation options - including Mt. Adams. There's also a commercial stable three miles down the road and golf (Husum Hills) approx. five miles away. Also multiple wineries and breweries within driving distance.

Hood River is a ten minute drive away. A great place to go for shopping and a meal. Trout Lake is about twenty miles to the North. The town of White Salmon is about five miles east.

A little more on the rustic charms… Cabin is about 600 square feet and includes main living area / kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and screened sleeping porch overlooking river. Maximum occupancy is three / two cars - though best suited for couple. It's an open floor plan, with limited separation between main living area and bedroom. The sleeping porch is screened and sits right on river. It's open and can get chilly - though is perfect in summer months - actually pretty dreamy. It's cozy living quarters - ideal for a couple. There is a basic shower and sink from a curtained bathroom off the master bedroom. Kitchen is very functional and includes small fridge, electric oven with stove top, coffee maker, toaster, sink with hot water, basic pots and pans, cooking tools, dishware, silverware etc. (on a hot summer weekend you will want to think about supplementing mini fridge with a cooler). There's also a gas BBQ outside.

It's simple, though very cool and a perfect staging area for various activities or for just relaxing. Oh - and our dog thinks its the best place in the world too. Cabin is dog friendly - no deposit required provided your dog behaves him/herself and stays off furniture.

Note: If you do decide to rent / stay, it's important to us that you be good neighbors to the other cabin owners. We appreciate your (and dog if you bring one) consciousness about the wild and scenic environment, appropriate quiet times, etc. If you're looking for a place to be loud / party / entertain - that's fine - but this is not the location for you. Maximum occupancy is three and two cars - unless otherwise arranged. Extra rates apply if we agree to occupancy above three. Inside cabin is non smoking.

Also: for some reason East Lake Road doesn't link with Google Earth or GPS - to see in Google just type in 11 Creekside Place (even though it's 11 East Lake Road) White Salmon, 98672. I show 45 degrees 46'53.52'N 121 degrees 30' 52.46'W

Finally, Condit Dam was breached in October 2011 creating a free-flowing White Salmon river for the first time in about a hundred years. The water in front of cabin has changed dramatically as a result. We still sit right on water, but it's definitely more river than lake now - faster and a much lower channel has been dug. Still very beautiful and the river sounds are now even more pronounced - but no longer placid and simply different. Photos posted are updated to give you sense of the change. Given drop in river the bank is now pretty steep. Not death defying or anything that ominous, but you just need to be careful when walking close to the edge. Cabin is not suitable for young children due to the proximity to the river and lack of deck child precautions in place.

                          • Here's what New York Times says in is '46 Places to Go in 2013' article: 'a white-water paddler’s dream come true. A major dam removal in October to allow for fish passage means that the White Salmon River now runs all the way to the Columbia River, flowing freely from its glacial headwaters at Mount Adams for the first time in 100 years. Local outfitters like Wet Planet are expected to begin rafting and kayaking tours on the newly opened section of challenging Class IV rapids early this year. Conservationists are happy, too, as spawning chinook salmon and steelhead trout have already been spotted swimming upstream in the new habitat.' It's a very pretty and exciting river amongst other great features - i.e. Columbia Gorge, Mt. Hood, Mt Adams, Hood River, etc. ...moreless

This little cabin was a dream. The setting is beautiful and quiet. The cabin is rustic, but the photos here don't really do it full justice - it is quite charming. It had all the basic amenities and was well maintained. The owners gave us all the info we needed for a comfortable, enjoyable stay. We loved the screened porch, watching the rafters and kayakers float by, the books and board games, and the classic DVD's and videos. It is perfect for one or two people wanting peace and quiet and to enjoy outdoor activities. We particularly enjoyed the Husum Hills Golf Course just minutes away. The green fees were reasonable and the course uncrowded. It is very hilly (hence the name), so a cart is recommended unless you're ready for the ups and downs. A huge bonus of this cabin was that it is pet friendly. I loved having my dog with me on vacation. We were there in late July and early August and the weather was mostly perfect. There was only one night that was quite warm and the bedroom got uncomfortable for sleeping, but we slept well on the screened porch that night. This little cabin is a gem and there are many fun activities and restaurants within very short driving distance. Loved every minute of our stay and hope to return.

A charming cabin that fit the bill entirely for our relaxing getaway. We couldn't have been happier when we arrived and saw that the property was even more special than the photos on VRBO. Courtney was very prompt at replying to emails and questions we had. Highly recommend.

This is, as advertised, a charming cabin in a lovely location, right above a roaring river. Unfortunately, we got there in the midst of a ferocious heat wave, so that tempered our enjoyment. However, such heat waves are rare; my only caution to future travelers would be to check the weather in advance. Two (minor) defects: 1. The windows in the main bedroom had no screens, which meant we could not open them to cool the room down in the evening. 2. The main bedroom floor had apparently not been completely swept before our arrival, and there was some grit on the floor—nothing major. The owner was very pleasant to deal with. I would heartily recommend this place, with the one caveat of avoiding a (very rare) severe heat wave.

The drive to the cabin was quite scenic with lush trees and foliage. The detailed instructions from Courtney were easy to follow. The cabin is simple, clean, nestled in a serene but vibrant setting. The rush of the White Salmon River below provides a calming continuous chorus. We greeted the mornings with coffee on the small deck. The kitchen was small yet amply equipped and the space functions well. A screened-in porch was our dining room, a reading room and a place to nap. We ended our days in a comfortable king size bed. As Courtney shared through emails, there was plenty to do at or around the cabin and within short driving distances. We celebrated a 50th birthday with white water rafting that was 2.5 miles away. We hiked both days we were there, found easy trails and trails that were for the more adventurous. The cabin is(if you are open to it) somewhat magical; a place to reflect, relax, rest, and listen. Thanks Courtney for sacred moments! We will be back!

Beautiful, humble digs on the White Salmon River. Highlights: 1. Wood stove and firewood. 2. Screened sleeping/lounging porch. Not only is this a great, bug-free spot in the house to hang out, one can leave the door open at night (or any time of day) to get the full sound of the rushing river below. 3. Location. Right on the river, no traffic, quiet neighbors, super close to the towns of White Salmon and Hood River. 4. Our dog was able to stay with us. Lowlights: Mm, none. The owners are very honest about what they are providing and price this cabin accordingly. This ain't the Benson Hotel, nor should it be. Everything worked, there was wood for the stove, ground coffee and filters for the coffee maker, a fridge, a bathroom, a king sized bed, a great view of the reclaimed river. What more do you need?

Perfect retreat to "get away from it all"! My husband and I enjoyed our time on the White River and this perfect little cabin. The screened in front area was perfect for sitting and relaxing and listening to the roar of the river. Would definitely come back here! Also, the owners were so accomodating and friendly - a unique thing on VRBO.

About the owner: Portland couple and their dog.

Why the Owner Chose White Salmon:
Simple, very charming cabin, close to Portland and in the middle of Columbia Gorge recreational opportunities. We also like the Hood River vibe.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We love the Columbia Gorge and all it has to offer. We can't think of a better place to be on a summer evening than on the deck at the rivers edge after a day of paddling or hiking. And our golden retriever loves it even more than we do!
