Location: White Salmon, Columbia River Gorge, Washington State, USA (Northwestern Park approx. 7 miles from Hood River ) View Map
Accommodations: Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)
Nestled right on the banks of the White Salmon river in a small community of other cabins. It's private, though not isolated - there are neighboring cabins across the river and one next door. The setting is picturesque. Accommodations are simple (rustic) but with all the basic amenities. And less than an hour and a half from Portland, ten minutes from Hood River - its hard to beat the location.
Daytime outdoor activities, dinner on the deck, and sleeping on the sun porch are our favorite things to do. The river is spring fed so it is cold all year and swift, but a quick dip on a hot day is possible. Kayaking and rafting on the river are popular (class 2-5), and there are several guided trips options. There are also ample hiking, cycling and mountain biking options including the Nestor Peak 19 mile loop trail - which you can start from the door. Trout Lake and the Gifford Pinchot are to the North with lots more recreation options - including Mt. Adams. There's also a commercial stable three miles down the road and golf (Husum Hills) approx. five miles away.
Hood River is a ten minute drive away. A great place to go for shopping and a meal. Trout Lake is about fifteen miles to the North. The town of White Salmon is about five miles east.
A little more on the rustic charms… Cabin is about 600 square feet and includes main living area / kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and screened sleeping porch overlooking river. Maximum occupancy is four / two cars - though best suited for couple. It's an open floor plan, with limited separation between main living area and bedroom. The sleeping porch is screened and right on river. It's open and can get chilly - though is perfect in summer months - actually pretty dreamy. It's cozy living quarters - perfect for a couple. There is a basic shower and sink from a curtained bathroom off the master bedroom. Kitchen is very functional and includes small fridge, electric oven with stove top, coffee maker, toaster, sink with hot water, basic pots and pans, cooking tools, dishware, silverware etc. (on a hot summer weekend you will want to think about supplementing with a cooler). There's also a gas BBQ outside. The cabin is not suitable for young children due to the proximity to the river and lack of child precautions in place.
It's simple, though very cool and a perfect staging area for various activities or for just relaxing. Oh - and our dog thinks its the best place in the world too. And, dog friendly as well - no deposit required provided your dog behaves him/herself and stays off furniture.
Note: If you do decide to rent / stay, it's important to us that you be good neighbors to the other cabin owners. We appreciate your (and dog if you bring one) consciousness about the wild and scenic environment, appropriate quiet times, etc. If you're looking for a place to be loud / party / entertain - that's fine - but this is not the location for you. Maximum occupancy is four and two cars. Extra rates kick in with the fourth. Inside cabin is non smoking.
Also: for some reason East Lake Road doesn't link with Google Earth or GPS - to see in Google just type in 11 Creekside Place (even though it's 11 East Lake Road) White Salmon, 98672. I show 45 degrees 46'53.52'N 121 degrees 30' 52.46'W
Finally, Condit Dam was breached in October 2011 creating a free-flowing White Salmon river for the first time in about a hundred years. The water in front of our cabin has changed dramatically as a result. We still sit right on water, but it's definitely more river now than lake now - faster and a much lower channel has been dug. Still very beautiful and the river sounds are now even more pronounced - but no longer placid and simply different. I've posted some updated photos to give you sense of the change. Given drop in river the bank is now pretty steep. Not death defying or anything that ominous, but you just need to be careful when walking close to the edge.

Why the Owner Chose White SalmonSimple, very charming cabin, close to Portland and in the middle of Columbia Gorge recreational opportunities. We also like the Hood River vibe.
The Unique Benefits at this CabinWe love the Columbia Gorge and all it has to offer. We can't think of a better place to be on a summer evening than on the deck at the rivers edge after a day of paddling or hiking. And our golden retriever loves it even more than we do!

Spent some quiet time at the cabin and explored the new river landscape as the White Salmon reclaims its wild riverbed. This is the perfect place to carve out some time to write, hike, think, bike, and kayak. The cabin kitchen is better organized than mine...I will be back.

I had a wonderful time with my girl and my dog! Very peaceful and loved the smell of wood stove that lingered within the cabin. The screen room was something out of a dream. Great owners and easy to work with. Thanks for a piece of paradise.

Perfect sized place with an incredible sleepable sun room overlooking the river. Immediately felt like home after a long day hiking/swimming/relaxing in the surrounding areas. The river is too cold to swim in, but it's fun seeing the whitewater rafters and kayakers float by. Careful laying on the bed too long as the river noise and coziness will lull you to sleep. Can't wait to go back.

Escape from the city. Only an hours drive from Portland and you feel like you are one hundred miles away. Sit on the deck all day and watch rafter, kayakers, and fishermen, drift by, waving, smiling and telling you all about their adventures. Then set up the BQ and cook your favorite dinner while the fish jump and splash a stones throw away. After dinner go on a beautiful hike up the river and see deer and other wildlife foraging. Finally, retire to bed and listen to the river flowing by while it sings you to sleep. Your stay at this charming cabin will make you want to return year after year.

We have enjoyed staying here numerous times. In the winter there is often snow around the cabin and great cross country skiing not far away on Mt Adams. In the summer there are lots of wonderful hikes nearby and the lake to jump into to cool off. I like that it is a pretty drive from Portland to get there and that it is close to Hood River with lots of good resturants. The cabin is perched right over the water, almost and there is a nice little deck and small floating dock. It has been a perfect place to travel with my girlfriend- we like staying there and exploring the surrounding area alot.

We have spent several weekends here and our favorite place to sleep is on the screened porch right over the water's edge. We fall to sleep with the moonlight on the water and wake to wildlife floating by. Great hiking, biking and kayaking just out the door.

I love this cabin. I've stayed here a couple of times with friends, and enjoyed it each time for its rustic comfort and good company. For me, it's the perfect place for a lazy, loungy summer day reading a book, taking a walk, followed by a swim and a BBQ. My more adventurous friends went for the long day's hike/bike/kayak in the playground out the door. It's a great place to come home to after either option.
