Casa Xano Xano is located half an hour from the colonial center of Oaxaca in the village of San Augustin, Etla, in the foothills of the Sierra Norte mountains. The house is high on a hill overlooking the village, valley, and the mountains. From the terrace you can see two colonial churches nestled in the trees.Our home has two completely separate apartments. The guest apartment has two bedrooms with queen size beds. Each bedroom has french doors leading out to private plant filled courtyard with gurgling fountain. There is a large kitchen with complete water purification system. There is a great view from the kitchen table looking out over the pool to one of the pink colonial churches in the valley. The comfortable, art filled, living room has a flat screen TV with cable. French doors open onto a second private terrace overlooking our vegetable garden and the mountains beyond. Wifi internet is throughout the apartment.There is a large pool house with outdoor living/dining and a gas grill. It is a perfect spot for cocktails and sunsets.
The area is full of daily adventures. For this reason it is more convenient to have a car. But we are only three minute walk from the collectivo stand. [ Five person taxis] It is a twelve peso ride into the city. We can arrange for airport pickups and private taxis for touring at very reasonable rates.
Basic shopping is available in the village as well as simple restaurants. In the next village there is a colorful daily market.
San Augustin is home to CASA, Center de las Artes de San Augustin. Housed in a magnificently renovated textile factory. There are revolving exhibitions and various classes. Next door is a wonderful paper factory. They are happy to walk you through the handmade process.
There are miles of beautiful trails in the hills around us.
We ask for a minimum of a three day stay. Unfortunately, we are not a house for small children.
There is weekly maid service. Laundry service available for a fee.
San Agustin is an authentic Mexican village. Birthdays are celebrated with fireworks, funeral processions through the village are led by brass bands. Roosters, burros and dogs, punctuate it all. It is truly a magical place. We will do all we can to make your stay memorable.

My husband and I just left the magnificent "nest" that Penelope and Victor have created in the past few years - a gem indeed and two of the most gracious and lovely hosts we have ever met, and we've met many! The spacious and accomodating two bedroom apartment rests below their quarters yet still enjoys really magnificent views and is an ideal vista for unforgettable sunsets. The entire property is perfectly and delightfully presented - manicured yet abundant gardens, covered outside sitting/dining area plus two other outdoor seating settings for us guests and a much appreciated swimming pool. The decor is elegant yet inviting, very comfortable beds and beautiful linens, sweet and gentle doggies and kitties and a nicely equipped kitchenette. The town of San Augustin is one of Oaxaca's more charming outlying villages(Google it!) with real Mexican charm and corazon. It's only a 25 minute (depending on the time of day) drive from the Big City and for us it was a great refuge from the heat and the bustle. And, we had the added bonus of enjoying the compnay of Sebastian, the driver recommended by Pene and Victor. We cannot express adeuqately how special our stay at Casa Xano Xano was and we encourage anyone coming to Oaxaca to spend AT LEAST a few days at their magnificent home. It's a bargain AND a rare treat!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

About the owner: Penny and I are transplanted Brooklnites who retired in 2010. I taught theatre design and Penny was a decorative painter. We fell in love with Mexico on a vacation years ago. So, the years before retirement, whenever we could get down here, we toured all over, looking for a new home. We stepped off the plane and it was love at first sight. Our dogs Maggie and Molly will be only to happy to let you pet them.
