Island Trader stay
Island Trader stay
My husband & I stayed at Island Trader for our 30 year wedding anniversary. Our son and his wife joined us for a few days. First off the view is great and the pool was very relaxing. When we checked in we couldn't get the house any cooler that 80 so we contacted Bill the owner, he was great and had someone to work on the A/C within a couple hours. The house is definitely older and could use a little TLC but the view is great and it seems there was always a breeze in the backyard to make it so much more pleasant while sitting outside We loved the fact that they did allow dogs since we always travel with ours. We brought our 25' boat and getting to the cut was very easy and the ramp by the Islander restaurant was pretty close. If you want a good meal go to Key Colony Beach Inn Restaurant the food is great. The Sunset Bar & Grill by the 7 mile bridge is a great place for lunch the view is great and they have a pool as well.

We have been home for 2 days now from our month long stay at the "Island Trader". I already miss it! We had such a wonderful time. As stated in previous reviews, the house is older, but.... it is still a great house. The view is amazing. We spent a lot of times outdoors, but when we were indoors it was just as great! We had different people come and stay with us 3 weeks of our stay and every one of them loved it just as much as we did. The last week my husband and I sent the kids home and had a week just the 2 of us. It was a great home for a group or just a couple of people. Bill, the owner was very quick to call back and take care of one minor issue we had with the oven. Other that that we had no other problems. I highly recommend this home as your next stay in Marathon. This was our 5th year vacationing in Marathon, and this was by far one of the best years we have had. Thank you so much Bill for opening your home and letting us experience as my husband said all month "paradise"!!!

As soon as you open the front door, you know you have chosen an AWESOME vacation property...the view of the ocean, the pool, the tiki-hut..this is what it is all about in THE KEYS!! The entire back of the house is all full length glass to look at the incredible view. To us a vacation is all about the outdoors and this property is perfect . We spent all our time outdoors.... in the pool, fishing, sunning, cooking fresh seafood, eating under the tiki-hut and at night sitting on the dock looking at the stars. Just a wonderful quiet relaxing location!! The kitchen was well stocked...the bathrooms are updated...the a/c is cold...there is a brand new very comfortable king mattress in the master bedroom which has a walk-in closet... loved waking up every morning to the incredible view!! The photo's are very accurate...the property is very neat and clean...the location is close to all stores.(Winn-Dixie,K-Mart,Publix,Home Depot)...Fish Tales and Keys Fisheries are great for fresh fish, shrimp, stone crabs,lobster,etc....Savannah Sweets has delicious key lime pie and so many cupcakes and fresh baked bread. We have already booked for 2014 and are looking forward to returning to enjoy all this property has to offer. Thank you Jackie...you are a delight to work with...and Bill, the owner, very attentive.. both only a phone call away...no complaints here.... Highly recommend to all who enjoy THE KEYS experience...thanks so much for sharing your vacation property!!

We are currently wrapping up our stay in the home. We have enjoyed our stay immensly. Some of the reviews of this property mention that the house is run-down and maybe it does need a little TLC but in reality whose home doesn't? The difference here is that these people have opened their home for others to use for their vacation and likely don't get to spend as much time here fixing and repairing the little things. This is our 5th year renting a property in the Keys the previous home which we loved is now unavailable to us due to the owner living here full-time in the winter. For obvious reasons we were unsure about a new rental, pictures can be deceiving, but these were pretty spot on. We spent our vacation outside of the home for the most part, the sea wall provided endless hours of entertainment with fishing and manatees. The pool was great too. I do wish there was more flexibility with split weeks etc with this property a 10 day stay would have been perfect but was not an option. Our children who are 10 and 14 with forever remember their stay here. I am sure we will try to come back.

If your going to spend a week in the keys, it's all about outside. Four guys, friends for several decades now, were granted a man-trip by the wives. Spent a year planning, researching, and organizing. My younger brother and I grew up in the keys, but moved away in the late 80's, ready to get back. Ended up towing an enclosed trailer down 2/3rds the eastern seaboard (Fishing and diving gear, outside stuff, stereo stuff, tiki-torches, steaks, beer...etc). Following about 20 hours of quality time with friends and family in a smelly truck, we arrived at this home. The home was not occupied the day before our rental began, they were kind enough to offer an extra night at a very reasonable cost. Opened front door, opened back door, opened beer, jumped in the canal, opened more beer, jumped in pool. View. Priceless. I brought a small 4-channel speaker setup (Logitech-computer type) and wired it into the tiki-hut, along with several spools of xmas lights. why not right. We rented a 27 foot pro-kat from "vacationboatrentals" for a great off-season rate. Here's the next 8 days in a nutshell: 500AMish: Bacon sandwiches, coffee, rig bait, load coolers, start boat, sun rise and dropping throttles to the Marathon Hump or sombrero reef, (watch your storm forecasts when traveling past a few miles out, got a little bumpy a few times) 9AMish: Fish ON, tuna, shark, snapper, wahoo 12-15PMish: head back in, reef fish, spearfishing, lobster hunt, sandwich, beers. Early afternoon: Heading back in, jump in pool with beer to knock salt off, crank some good tunes up from the tiki hut modification, torches lit on seawall, beers flowing, we also brought a fire pit, great for grilling Allen Brothers finest beef over hardwoods (also brought firewood, apple-wood, pear, etc...what, we had a lot of time to plan this). Evenings: eat too much, some sport of blender concoction is distributed, poker in the tiki hut, music, OH, always had a line off of the fish table rod-holder, 5 foot tarpon, right from the seawall. The house is cozy, layed out well, a little dated, but if you're planning on spending much time inside, then you're doing the keys the wrong way. The backyard, view of the Atlantic, pool and tiki-hut made this location, the boat didn't hurt a bit either. For what we wanted, it was better than perfect, we're still all amazed how 8 days went by in 5 minutes. The four of us are trying to plan a kid free week next.

Decent house...AMAZING LOCATION! For us, we travel with our dogs and spend most of our time outside...so the home was perfect. The owners are very professional and prompt in their replies. Everything was clean and kitchen was great for cooking in for the night. The home could use some tending to (paint, rust, doors, windows)- as being right on the ocean can quickly age any property...inside and out. However, we spent 90% of our trip in the backyard. It's great for fishing, grilling or relaxing to the peace and quite. We have traveled to the Keys for years and only use VRBO, we would stay here again in the future. Thanks for sharing your home.

All in the View
All in the View
From the moment you walk in the door the expansive views of the Atlantic are all you can see. Like other travelers, we thought the house seems a bit worn because it’s a popular rental with families. We spent all of our time outside in the backyard enjoying the pool, view, tiki hut, and grill. The convenience of keeping our boat on the seawall was great. The location was perfect for boating being close to Sombrero Reef and with the Vaca Cut allowing easy access to the Oceanside. The house is in walking distance to stores and was overall very quiet.

Laid back and Relaxing....
Laid back and Relaxing....
My family and I journeyed to the Florida Keys for the first time last month, and chose this home to call ours for the week. The five of us were very comfortable in this home, and while there were a couple small snags( I think probably just because of it being such a popular rental with families), they were quickly taken care of to our satisfaction when we brought up the issues. The home was a little bit worn, with a few dings and scratches, but it sounds like they are already working to remedy these things already with the new furniture and beds. Highlights for us were the wonderful pool, which is right next to the dock/ atlantic ocean and right outside the living room door, the tiki hut, which has little twinkle lights to turn on in the evenings when out by the pool. My dad and son spent a LOT of time fishing right off of the dock, which was great because they had the cleaning station/table right there next to them! We made use of the gas grill that was out next to the tiki hut and enjoyed eating kabobs out next to the pool. I must add that we also were charmed by the huge great white egrets(birds) that stop by to visit the dock on a regular basis! Wonderful vacation and we would return!

I vacation in the Florida Keys every year and this was the first time I was disappointed in the rental. The only thing that saved the vacation was the pool and the view. The house was old and run down. The living room furniture was torn, very worn and dirty. The beds in all the room were in poor condition. You could feel every spring poking through. "Cleaned" dishes in the cupboard still had dried food on them. The house needs a lot of TLC. I will not recommend this rental property.

Owner response: I am sorry you were disappointed. We recently had a new leather sleeper sofa delivered and have restocked our linens and kitchen. We do not have too much feedback on the beds but are checking in to having the mattresses checked and changed out. Our housekeeping should have checked the cupboards etc. to be sure all is clean, but sometimes folks put things away dirty and we must not have caught that at the time. I wish you would have called I would have liked the opportunity to make your stay pleasant.
WOW! We went in celebration of our 25th anniversary and what a wonderful pick we made. Most romantic place we have ever stayed. Hardly ever entered the house because the back with the pool, the tiki hut and the view were absolutely fantastic. Would definately stay here again.
