Custom built holiday home perched on Paku Hill with incomparable views of the Pacific Ocean, coastline and offshore islands. Spacious, protected deck to watch moonrises and sunsets. Trail from the house leads to long, sandy Ocean Beach, ideal for swimming, good snorkling along the reef & surfing when conditions are right, a morning jog or basking in the sun. Enjoy a hot outside shower with a 180 degree view. Walk along the estuary one kilometer to the town of Tairua with shops & services. Or closer to the wharf and ferry, dive shop, charter fishing and our favorite restaurant - 'Old Mill.' House is open and airy with local wood floors, cabinets and detailing, open beam ceilings, modern kitchen, carpeted bedrooms, fireplace for chilly nights, and a deck large enough to spend most your time. The master suite takes the entire upstairs with views all around. Very quiet, romantic & peaceful setting. Tairua on the Coromandel Peninsula has a Maritime climate with year round activities. Excellent fishing and diving and we enjoy our own catches of crayfish (lobster) and paua (abalone) and snapper often. Kayak in the estuary or to nearby Motuhoa Island. Most days we find we do not need to, or want to drive anywhere. Besides all the ocean activities there are local walks & trails, biking, or take the 10 minute ferry to Pauanui. There are easy drives to a multitude of unique & beautiful beaches, and to a host of other activities such as exploring the old goldmines in Broken Hills, wine tasting in Mercury Bay, thermal bathing at low tide at Hot Water Beach ,or a visit to the giant Kauri trees. Just a two + hour drive from Auckland airport.

About the owner: We are Hawaii residents who designed and oversaw the building of this home in 1998. Rob is a contractor in Hawaii and I am a vocational counselor with the State of Hawaii. Daughter Andrea (age 30) is in a PhD program at the University of Auckland and 28 year old son Lucas is an arborist/ farmer/hunter/fisherman/surfer living on the Big Island with his new bride, Mallory, his surf and business partner and nurse by profession.
Why the Owner Chose Tairua: We honeymooned in New Zealand in 1976 and have been visiting ever since. We spent a good part of 1999 in Tairua with our children enrolled in the local schools. Tairua is the other paradise we live when we have the chance.
The Unique Benefits at this House: We swim, surf, fish, hike, bike, read, snorkle, jog, walk to town and rarely drive when we are in Tairua. We will go to Hot Water Beach and hike to Catheral Cove and ride the bikes to Pauanui and take the ferry back to Tairua. We usually take one big drive to visit another area. In November 2012 we hiked the Heaphy Trek and the Abel Tasman. In March 2011 and 2013 we spent time in the Bay of Islands and the Kauri forests, in April 2010 we did a several day bike ride in Otago and hiked the Kepler Trek. It is now May of 2015 and the whole family just returned from a two month stay in NZ. We toured the north and south island hiking the Kepler and Queen Charlotte Track and the coastal walkway around Cape Reinga. Lucas showed Mallory the magic of Aotearoa for the first time.
