My husband and I spent 5 nights at this lovely home. The views are spectacular. The house is well equipped and very comfortable, with high ceilings, lots of light and outstanding views. There is a foot path down to the beach which brings you to a great surfing and swimming beach to the left and a rocky beach with tidal pools and interesting formations to the right. Karyn, the caretaker suggested some great places to visit such as the beach at the end of Sailor's Grave road. It was every bit as beautiful as she said. She also suggested some great places to hike a gorge, and gave us good information about finding groceries, etc. The view from the deck of the house is superb. We sat out there for hours looking at the beautiful beach below and watching the surfers. We saw a pod of 8 very large, black dolphins come down the beach and swim around the surfers for a few minutes before continuing south down the beach. We had a full moon while we were there and watched it rise over the rocks and shine on the ocean all the way to the water below the deck. The stars are amazing at night. The location of this house, perched on Paku Hill gives great views while also not seeing over any other house. There is one house perched above it that allows those people to see you but they seemed to only be there on the weekend we were there and were gone during the week. The arrangement of the bedrooms allows privacy if you use both bedrooms, as one is downstairs and the master is upstairs. I would recommend this house to a couple or a small family. Great choice.

This house, with an amazing panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, exceeded our expectations...and for Americans, we consider ourselves well-traveled (having traveled to other beautiful places including Bali, Brazil, Costa Rica, and much of Europe). Tairua is a quaint, coastal town that is not commercialized or touristy. The owners put a lot of thought into the design and construction of this home. It's located on Paku Hill about 200 feet above the Pacific Ocean...with a fun, 5 minute walk that takes you to Ocean Beach. There are an abundance of attractions nearby as well as within a short drive including: 1.) Ocean Beach 2.) Hawaiian Massage Center (just down the street...and THE PLACE to get an amazing massage!) 3.) Tairua village 4.) Hot Water Beach (and there are plenty of better beaches in the area...just need to find them for yourself) 5.) Cathedral Cove 6.) Rangihau Ranch - awesome place go horse back riding...so fun! We will be back next year! Thank you!

We stayed here with our 3 boys (age 8-15) for 5 nights last January and had the most perfect time. From the moment you arrive and see the breathtaking views you will be in love with this house. At the house there was everything we needed to make our stay feel like we were at home. From a well stocked kitchen to soft comfy beds, we were in heaven. The boys loved running down the trail to the beach and our oldest spent hours exploring the hills and hikes around the house. And from Tairua it is a short drive to many other great spots on the Coromandel like Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove, and Pauanui. Also, Keryn, the house manager, was very helpful in getting us settled and giving us ideas for places to eat and things to do. I have stayed in many different rental homes around the world, and by far, this has been our favorite. Thank you again for a wonderful time and we will be back, hopefully soon!

I spent an awesome 3 day weekend here at the end of November. Is such a good spot with unreal views, beach access and everything you could need at the house. In the 3 days I was here we managed to get a couple of surfs in, do a hike, dig hot pools at Hot Water Beach, visit a couple of the other beaches in the area and lots more. The house is like a home away from home except you're at a perfect beach, I'm going back! Highly recommended!!!!

We had a wonderful time at your vacation home! Our family spent nearly a week and we found the house has fabulously positive energy, and has the perfect set-up for a vacation home. Super comfortable beds, open kitchen/living space, and a large deck. Moreover, it's perch on the hill gave us spectacular views of the Pacific ocean, stunning sunsets, and a magical starshow at night. We loved being so close to Tairua beach (a walk down the stairs or a five-minute drive), which was a great beach for boogie-boarding, swimming, or just laying on the sand. As well, the village is really relaxed, with some fine cafes (including Out of the Blue Cafe), a tranquil estuary, and a park for the kids. The perfect atmosphere for a vacation, particularly for families with kids. Moreover, we loved being within an hour's drive to both Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, which are two NZ must-see's. Cathedral cove consisted of a 30 minute hike through bush that leads you to a picturesque cove, with beautiful beaches. As for Hot Water Beach, it is quite the scene, where people dig up the sand to build their personal hot water baths. Loads of fun! Thanks for helping making this our best vacation in years!! I would easily recommend this property to friends or family.

A friend and I came for a too-short weekend to do a long bike ride. After finishing the ride, there was no better feeling in the world than sitting on the balcony in the sunshine, watching the ocean. As one of the other reviewers wrote, the pictures don't really do justice to the breathtaking location. And you will fall asleep to the sound of the surf. It's a wonderful place to stay and I'd come back in a heartbeat. Thanks for letting us use your beautiful home.

This place is even more breathtaking than the photos imply and we were as excited as little kids when we pulled up. There are shades of Mandalay with the wild ocean breaking on the cliffs below and the beach stretching out into the distance, with islands as far as the eye can see. It doesn't matter if it's sunny and warm or cold and wet, as it was for much of our stay. With log fire raging, you're cocooned above this amazing maritime drama - high winds and an angry sea - just taking it all in with a glass of red wine in hand and a leg of NZ lamb in the oven. Bliss. Laurel, the Hawaii-based owner, was terrific to deal with via email and her local representative, Kerryn, is a lovely woman who keeps the property spotless, happily dispenses local advice, and also offers the most amazing massages. Seriously, it you want a winter getaway with virtually no-one around except the bellbirds in the trees outside, plus the occasional pampering from Kerryn, this place can't be beaten. If you do come in the NZ winter months, you need to be aware that local dining options are limited so it's essential that you bring enough goodies of your own to eat. The Old Mill Cafe down the road only opens from Thursday to Sunday in winter and we were very happy when it finally opened its doors. Beautiful coffee and fabulous food for lunch and dinner, including the heartiest lamb shanks, plus the friendliest of owners who gave us their own tips about where to go and what to do. Summer is when Tairua comes alive and everything opens again. But we were told that winter is by far the better option if you're like us and just want to get away from it all. Here's a tip. We flew into Auckland, spent the night in town and went to the French growers market that's held every Saturday at La Cigale in Parnell. We bought most of what we needed for the entire week, including the most amazing food and wine, and then loaded up the rental and headed off on the two hour drive to Tairua. The rest you can get from the local supermarket, including excellent fresh bread and croissants, and the town has plenty of liquor options. But aside from an excellent butcher, we were glad we brought most of what we needed. With a car, you can explore the spectacular Coromandel Peninsular. But our best moment of the day was coming home, lighting the fire and dozing off with just the odd bird call and the sound of the waves crashing on the cliffs and beach below. One of the best and most relaxing weeks ever.

I stayed here the entire month of June -- an incredibly inspiring and enjoyable month. I was doing creative work, and felt my muse the entire time. It is one of the most magical places I have been -- the moods of the sky and ocean are constantly changing, and fully experienced in this house with huge windows and a beautiful porch that feels at the edge of the world. The Aldeman Islands in the distance light up pink in the evenings after the sun has set and rainbows are not rare. Still, crystal blue clear days give way to visibility of sting-rays and others creatures swimming below. Even in June I spent many days in my bathing suit on the porch, which warms up beautifully when the sun is out. I ran the beach in the mornings, walked the estuary in the evenings, and besides that rarely had any desire to leave the house. A resident tui bird sings in the Pohutukawa tree each morning. A treasure. Can't wait to return.

In a nutshell, the best place we've ever stayed - ever! We only spend 4 nights here in late March, but wish it could have been forever! Agree with everything the other reviewers have to say - and 5 stars are just not enough. Like other visitors, all we wanted to do was sit on the deck and stare at the the beach and ocean. The views are amazing. Didn't even bother going to the hot water beach because life was so much better "at home". Very quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. The house has everything - including a washer and dryer. So nice to end a trip with clean clothes. The town of Tairua is small but cute, and you can get anything you'll need. We lucked out one afternoon when hundreds of antique cars came to visit for the afternoon. Car show right on the beach. Would recommend this vacation property to anyone, and plan to return next winter. And thanks to VRBO ( yet again ) for letting us find this place. Great service!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of our trip to the North Island. We were so excited for our trip after arriving here and taking in the BEAUTIFUL view! We had the doors open the entire day and ate all our meals out on the deck taking in the view. Then, at night we'd make a fire and enjoy being inside where it was warm :). Laurel (the owner) was also extremely helpful and gave us lots of useful tips for our stay! The little town of Tairua is great too.. grocery store, good selection of restaurants, and more. Definitely recommend this place!

This home is a gem! Surrounded by nature, it is a quiet little retreat. My husband and I chose this house to bring our family who was visiting us this past June (2011). Tairua is a wonderful town with a great vibe. We are so happy with the location of the house- it is close to the town where there are little shops and a grocery store, but it is up and away from everything as well- which we liked because we felt like we had Tairua to ourselves! It was so nice and quiet! We explored and got to see much of the Coromandel and it was all close to this town. We found this house to be very spacious and modern- everything you need to make you feel at home and then some!! The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was great to cook in with lots of room! The fireplace was enjoyable too! The windows are big and extend around the house from the kitchen to the dining room and the living room, which makes way for beautiful views even as you are inside the house. The house lit up each morning with a stunning view of the sun rising over the ocean. This place is literally right on the edge of the mountain, so there are no houses blocking your view. Out on the deck, it felt like we were sitting in the tree tops with the birds- we had a view right down to the beach and we even saw the bottle nose dolphins jumping as they swam by. The walk down to the ocean starts right outside this house and it takes only 5 minutes to get to the bottom. It is an easy little hike and safe for children- we took our two year old nephew on the trail. The beach was very quiet and the people we met walking along the beach were very friendly. My husband was happy that we stayed here because there was really good surf on the beach. While the men surfed, my sister and I picked shells and watched some of the native seabirds on the beach (we spotted them by looking in a NZ bird book that we borrowed from the house- one of many books they had there). Besides the beach being right at our finger tips, we also found nice hikes around the neighborhood- we walked from the house up to the top of the mountain and saw lots of native plants, birds and amazing panoramic views of the coromandel, so you don't have to even drive anywhere to get a little adventure in and experience nature. I recommend this home to stay at. It made for an unforgettable experience on the coromandel and I know my family got a good feel for New Zealand staying here. Enjoy!

Our family of 4 spent two glorious weeks in this amazing beach house. We had plenty of room to relax indoors and watch the surfers from the spacious deck. Viewing the star show at night with the Southern Cross above our heads made our stay magical. The house is truly a work of art with the high ceilings and cross beams, made from the most beautiful exotic wood, well equipped kitchen, laundry room and that great view from all around. We felt as if we were in a ship floating on the water. The sunrise out the master bedroom was spectacular. We did everything there was to do in Tairua and surrounding areas including hiking, feeding birds at the bird sactuary, wallowing in the hot water at Hot Water Beach, touring the coast with all the wonderful beaches, talking to locals in the library and eating at all the restaurants in town. We spent a great amount of time walking the pristine beach just below the house collecting seashells, swimming and watchng the surfers. The owners were helpful in every way leaving ideas of things to do and a tide chart to help us plan our beach activities. We would highly recommend this property and this part of the North Island, New Zealand to any traveler visiting this part of the planet.

A beautiful setting for a relaxing, adventuresome vacation spot. Comfortable, quiet and the right size for our family. Close enough to walk into town, down the hill to the beach or just hang out on the spacious deck over looking the ocean and other beautiful scenery. Had a fantastic 1st time experience to NZ. Would definitely stay here again!

We have stayed in this beautiful home twice; returning because it was such a delightful experience. We've never stayed anywhere that had such spectacular ocean views whether from out on the deck, sitting at the dining table,or standing at the kitchen sink. Kayaking in the estuary and the ocean, taking many great walks in the area, meeting the friendly people in Tairua, exploring the Coromandel Peninsula and getting in lots of beach time; we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

We had only two weeks to spend in New Zealand and decided to spend it on the North Island. Through a fortunate turn of events, we spent a week of it in this lovely home. As other reviewers have stated, the views are spectacular. We had the feeling of being suspended over the ocean as we gazed out at the pristine beach and beautiful coastal islands. This great home is constructed with exotic wood and is fully and comfortably furnished with a very well equipped kitchen. The immediate area boasts hiking paths, a great surfing and swimming beach, kayaking, and a town with plenty of amenities within easy walking distance. The Coromandel Peninsula offer some of the most interesting natural treats of the North Island: Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach and the Waiau Kauri forest to mention a few. All in all an outstanding vacation home that made our trip very special. We would gladly return there if we ever make it back to New Zealand.

Our stay in this home, perched of the beach on Paku Hill in Tairua, was the highlight of our month-long vacation in New Zealand. The views on three sides of the beach below and the islands offshore were spectacular. The home is of excellent quality with a superb kitchen; it is very clean and well-maintained. We enjoyed the hours sitting on the deck being seranaded by a very friendly tui bird especially. We took walks along the trails that thread their way around Paku Hill. The location has good access to Cathedral Cove and the nearby thermal beach, a bird sanctuary, hiking trails that follow the old gold mine tunnels. We cooked at home mostly since the kitchen was so good (and there is a gas barbecue on the deck), but also had an exception meal at the restaurant on an old boat (sorry, forgot the name) that is anchored at the bottom of the hill. I would recomment this home to anyone vacationing in New Zealand.

Our family had a fabulous, relaxing time staying here. We have two daughters ages 4 and 8 and they loved running down the trail from the house to comb the beach for shells.
