Villa Licuala, situated on a paved road five minutes from Uvita, is a meticulously designed private three bedroom home. Set on three acres of landscaped botanical gardens that offer sweeping ocean views to one side and primary rain forest on the other, this secluded and luxuriant hideaway is totally attuned with its environment. The 500 million year old tropical rainforest dictated the design, use of materials, services and general ambiance. The result is ultra-deluxe comfort laced with total guest privacy in a low-key casual atmosphere. There is a calm, eastern orderliness and tranquility about the home. The main architectural influence is Southeast Asian but there are Costa Rican influences as well. The al-fresco living space surrounding the coral stone courtyard, the central rancho lounge, the Balinese tiled pool and the single story colonnaded buildings adhere to feng shui principles. Most social activity extends or is visually directed into the central courtyard. The palate of spaces used provides guest settings with appropriate levels of sociability, privacy and intimacy. These spaces are further framed by a lush landscape that soothes and calms rather than confines. The architectural materials are the home’s primary ornaments. The multi-sloped roofs are finished in locally mined grey quartz. All floors are done in a soft but elegant coral stone that does not heat up in the tropical heat and provides a non-slip surface due to its porous nature. Exposed wood beams and trusses under the high sloping roof are emphasized and carefully oriented to maximize air flow. The roof gutters were crafted from intricate formed concrete to achieve a distinctively “oriental modern” style. Two large etched teak doors recycled from an old Manila home serve as the entrance to the master bedroom. Interiors are both elegant and eclectic. The hand crafted wood windows encourage guests to take advantage of the continuous breezes that whip through the property but all rooms also have air conditioning and fans. All bathrooms and kitchens have imported fixtures and are lined with white quartz. The two master suites have king beds, full bathrooms, sea views and large walk-in closets. One of the master suites, in addition to a luxurious shower, has an outdoor roman bathtub with private garden views. The garden suite, ensconced with a comfy queen bed, has sea views, river views, a full bathroom, and a private terrace garden next to the river. The accompanied bath has a Javanese green stone pedestal sink next to a spacious open shower. All spaces are liberally accented with exquisite pieces collected by the well traveled owners. Flower arrangements are decoratively arranged throughout the living quarters and showcase several of the garden’s most rare and beautiful treasures. The private pool is flanked by large hand carved stone statues that also serve as water fountains. The pool is tiled with Balinese Sukabumi green stone imported from Indonesia. The DE pool filter ensures unparalleled water clarity. Sweeping ocean views are visible from all angles of the pool and a bench allows guests to sit in the water while taking these views in. The emphasis at Villa Licuala focuses around the extensive botanic garden. If you have any interest in the natural world, you’ll be bewitched by the sheer diversity on display here. Extravagantly colorful species link the house with the rainforest. An ancient wild nutmeg tree laden with ferns and philodendrons proffers shade and sits in the center of the estate. Hundreds of rare bromeliad species flank an extensive series of rustic limestone paths which meander through streams, bridges and pergolas. The estate specializes in rare palms and has one of the largest collections within the country. Over 260 types of rare palms, most native to New Caledonia and Madagascar, were imported and are now littered throughout the property and grouped according to genus. The heliconia collection does not disappoint with over 110 varieties and is the second largest collection in Costa Rica. The stone paths afford a greater chance to see and photograph wildlife as many of them cross through the heart of the primary rainforest. Guided garden tours are available on request. The informal and accommodating owners live on the second and third floor of the pagoda style home that sits 75 meters to the South and are friendly and full of information.
Master suites have king beds, air conditioning, fans, walk in closets, ocean views, indirect lighting and cathedral ceilings.
The garden room has the above amenities except has a queen bed and a dresser instead of a walk in closet....moreless

Uvita is in the heart of Costa Rica's Southern zone. It is the gateway to Ballena National Park. The Jardines del Morete development is comprised of several private residences and has one of the few paved roads in the area. The local beaches of Chaman and Hermosa are less than five minutes by car. Uvita has several restaurants, two large supermarkets, two banks, an urgent care center with adjacent pharmacy, auto mechanic, a gas station, three rental car companies and a host of other commercial services.
Year Purchased: 2012
About the owner: Victoria and Jason moved to Costa Rica in Victoria's mother's footsteps. They built their home in 2006 and live there with their two children.
Why the Owner Chose Dominical: The property is one of the few ocean view lots that has a paved road and is close to town (less than 5 minutes). It is also the first lot in the development that is flanked by primary rain forest. This property is 5 minutes by car to the nearest beach called Hermosa.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa: The property is very close to town but definitely removed from the commercial center. Most ocean view homes for rent in Uvita require 4 wheel drive and involve rather long drives up steep slopes (at least 15 minutes up a hill for the majority of Uvita ocean view homes). This is one of the primary reasons Jason and Victoria bought here. Add in the primary forest laced with an ocean view and a paved road and there was really no other option that even remotely compared. There are also strong winds here that are unique and cool down the property by at least five degrees relative to the rest of Uvita.
