This was our second time staying at the cabin. Steve thank you again for making the cabin available to us. We had a fantastic time again. The active volcano and south point are mother natures best work. The black sand beach was only a few minutes drive away. We walked the lava fields alone, it was excitingly eery. Black lava everywhere and not a person in sight. Kalapana is intense. For the people reading the review, I can't suggest any restaurants because we went to the market every few days so we had fresh fruit and vegetables and cooked on the grill everyday. It's hard to imagine how much better your body and mind feels after having no processed foods (other than the Hawaiian sweet bread) for 10 days. Thanks again and we'll see you soon.

This is our second stay at Steve’s home, our home away home. Our second time, you do not see too many cedar redwood houses this side of the Island, this house is a gem. We love the location. The house is in the middle of everything this side of the island has to offer. The cool thing about Steve’s the simplicity and Eco friendly his place is. We have been to the island many times. So we have days where we like just to stay at the house and hang. This is the place lots of room, 3 acres to walk about. You will discover all sorts of vegetation, the edible kind. My favorite the Lilikoi passion fruit, it was in abundance at the time of our stay. I left a few for the next guests coming after us, lol. A few things we did at Steve’s. Even it’s really not furnished at the time of our stay. Sleep one night in the Yurt at the back of the property. Hawaii rural style it was great. We also would take a blanket; few beers go out on a clear night and watch the stars, what a show. One last comment, if you want some privacy. It can be had at Steve’s. Trust us we are Nudist, enough said. Lol. If you want to know how it feels to live out here. Stay at Steve’s. You will not want to leave.

Staying in Steve's cottage was a fantastic experience! We felt at home as soon as we entered the door. We were 4 friends traveling to Hawaii in search of aloha spirit and we found it in Lilikoi Farm. Steve's house is spacious, comfortable and has a relaxing vibe. Resting at the charming lanai we could enjoy nature, hear wild birds singing and make friends with cute gekos. We also made use of Steve's musical instruments that we found in the living room. Ukulele rules! The garden offered us a large variety of fresh fruits and other goods like chili peppers and avocados. We were feeling safe as the neighbourhood is very friendly and peaceful. We discovered a fantastic farmer's market in the neighbor Kea'au town where we could buy fresh and delicious food in very good prices! We made several excursions to the nearby Volcano National Park, Hilo, Kalapana Black Sand Beach, Kumukahi, hot pounds, Kapoho, Lava Park, etc. We have a hope to return as soon as possible!

My husband and I stayed here for four days, we really loved the place. The listing description, the cabin is very eco friendly. The view is nice and tropical, the sounds of nature fills your ears day and night. Sitting on the rocking chairs out front were perfect at night to watch the stars, and moon as the clouds move past them. The interior of the house has a unique vibe to it, we absolutly loved it, the decorations set off the place. The ower even had music playing for us when we got there, and we tried to play a little of our own with the instuments in the living room. There was also so many beautiful things around is to look at, flowers, fruits, teas, pretty much everything. The ower was so welcoming, we appreciate it greatly. I would definately recommend this property to a friend or relative because it is very peacefull and romantic. There is so much to do on the Hilo side of the island that I definately recommend staying at least two weeks. There are alot of cool people to meet and places to adventure. I am so glad we got to stay in this cabin for our vacation.

Leslie and I have been to Hawaii many times. We still say this. Hilo and the Puna District are one of the last places where you feel how Hawaii was in the past, open, airy and rural. No wall to wall rental cars and major hotels. Here the locals outnumber the tourists. Steve's home fits the bill. A true Hawaiian home and is Eco-friendly too. The house is in Orchidland Estates which is perfect for this side of the island. This puts you in the middle of everything. seeing the lava flow, Volcanoes National Park, Hilo and the two places we love the most, Mak'u Farmers Market and Black Sand Beach. The beach is a blast on Sunday. We are Nudists, it's always a must visit. Steve's home is a hidden treasure in Orchidland. Just off a paved road and not far from the main road, as you drive up to Steve's house. you will think are visiting Hawaii and no other tourist are there. we enjoyed walking around the property, lots of hidden gems to see. There is a beautiful Eucalyptus tree in the back, awesome. One thing we did every night is sit out in the lanai, looking at the stars and listen to the soft sounds filter in from the neighborhood. We told this to Steve, we would be out there at night and you could feel a hidden energy in Orchidland, very nice. Steves description of the home on VBRO is dead on. no surprises, great place

We want to thank you for having us at the farm. We had a great time. The listing was exactly how the property was described. The sustainable environment really brings peace and made us realize how much we recklessly and wastefully rely on modern technology. It is a nice central location for visiting Volcano National Park, black sand beaches, and was just a short drive to see the telescopes at Mauna Loa Observatory. The photo's do not do the farm justice. It's much more beautiful in person. We kept the windows open for the entire stay. The breeze was very relaxing to fall asleep with and the morning downpour was a great way to wake up. The house was clean and was very well maintained. We used the grill everyday. Within 15 minutes there are several farmers markets with the best fruit and veggies. A few musts for future travelers: Mauna Loa Observatory, Volcano National Park, ALL of the farmers markets, black sand beaches, driving to see the southern most point of the island, walking through the lava fields at the chain of craters roads and driving on the Saddle Road. Oh and must take a helicopter tour. Doors off baby!!! We used Paradise Helicopters at the Hilo airport. I have already recommended the farm to friends and family. Thanks again we will definitely return.

This property was not as advertised. After my wife and I stayed one uncomfortable and unpleasant night at Lilikoi Farm on January 16th 2012, I called the owner immediately the next morning on January 17th, 2012 and informed him we wouldn’t be staying as it was not as advertised. I went through all the following complaints with him, and he did not dispute them. He apologized repeatedly. I cannot recommend this property for the following reasons: Non potable water Non potable tap in the kitchen was not advertised as such in the listing. There was a sign over the kitchen sink that said "Do not drink Tap water". As an alternative, Owner provided a dirty, old plastic container of water to drink and cook with. We had no guarantee even how fresh this was. This was not advertised on the listing. Had I known this alone, I would never have booked this property. Lack of privacy There were no blinds/curtains/drapes in the entire cabin. There was absolutely no privacy. The yurt in the back of your property had full view into the bedroom, as well as the outdoor tub. This was not advertised on this listing. Uncomfortable room Sunlight was way too bright to sleep past sunrise, and uncovered windows were creepy at night. We felt exposed and uncomfortable. As a consequence we did not sleep that night. Dirty towels and bedding The towels (both bath and kitchen) were old and mildewed. The sheets on the bed were old, worn and dirty. The duvet was smelly, dirty and greasy and obviously had not been changed for a very long time. I expected to be provided with clean, fresh bedding and linens. We were not.

Owner response: This couple was disappointed in the accommodations because they clearly did not carefully read the description. The description is accurate and in no way misleading. Unfortunately people come to the Puna District not aware of the environment here. Most are happy to get away from the Mega Resort environment but a few do not integrate well with the local culture. This honeymoon couple and those looking for luxury accommodations fronting picturesque white sand beaches will not find what they are looking for on the this side of the Big Island. The Hilo side does however offer a culture and environment you will not find anywhere else in Hawaii. The description clearly says this house has a catchment water supply as do over 80% of the homes in Puna. It is not recommended to drink catchment water, as clean as it may seem, without purification and chlorination. I do supply a 7 gallon jug of drinking water provided by the county at one of the many distribution stations in the area. The house is described as "Open and Airy" and the pictures show no curtains or blinds that is common for Hawaiian homes so as to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. There are no neighbors that can glare into the house. This couple from San Francisco found the night sky as "creepy" and the morning sun annoying. I personally enjoy the lack of city noise and light pollution. From bed you can enjoy watching shooting stars and the morning birds waiting to be fed. The home maybe considered rustic and although some of the linens may be faded by drying and airing in the sun, dirty or mildewed linens are definately not what is supplied. I have never had any complaints before of any kind. The couple staying both before and after this couple both gave 5 star reviews. Please email or call me if you have any concerns.

The description was perhaps somewhat understated and the pictures didn't really do the place justice. It is in fact "comfortable and quiet" as the listing suggests, but our experience was really one of the best we've had on island. Steve, the host, made us feel like family. I can't come up with a negative. It's peaceful. It takes a few minutes only to Rte 130, 40th Ave to Orchidland Drive, which positions one about midway between Pahoa and Kea'au. I feel comfortable in recommending this rental. Keith & Carolee

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: I fell in love with Hawaii traveling here and camping around all the islands on many vacations from my stressful job. This side of the Big Island is a lot like the culture and green environment I was used to in my rural Northern California home. I just felt like I fit in here better than anywhere else in Hawaii and so when the chance came, I moved. Scary as it was moving alone to a strange land with nothing but two suit cases, I have no regrets. I was lucky to find this great home.

                      Why the Owner Chose Keaau:
This home is accually my primary residence. I have another home as primarily a vacation rental that I have access to while this home is rented. This home I call Lilikoi Farm has the great benefit of being centrally located a short distance to Hilo, Pahoa, the Red Road Coastline, and Volcano. The 800ft elevation is idea for daily trade wind breezes and not much humidity. The Orchidland subdivision consists of 2 and 3 acre parcels providing the space other subdivisions do not.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
This house has been my home for eight years now. Living a sustainable live style with little effect on the environment is extremely important to me. I even drive a car fueled by used veggie oil. (Non- polluting and FREE) For eight years I have been working on this property pretty much by myself. The hopes of pulling together a family here have not come together as I wished and although I love working on this property, I'm getting older, slower and tiered of doing it all on my own. I have recently purchased another home (April 2011) in Hilo and I'm working on getting help financially and labor wise to releave me of the many daily chores of developing and running this farm. Thanks for your help in supporting Lilikoi Farm !
