Avoca lodge description
A secluded, private, ranch retreat ideal for family vacations, celebrations, holidays, reunions, retreats, weddings and group events.
Need to Relax? You've picked the right place. Nestled in the deeply carved valleys of the driftless region, Big Valley Ranch offers a quiet and extraordinary lodging experience where you can horseback ride, hike, bike and hunt right outside your door. Wildlife abounds with birds, squirrels, deer, turkey, and you might even see the elusive red fox, or a Big Buck just yards from the ranch. The grounds are both breathtaking and beautiful, with plenty of room for outdoor games and gatherings. With 40 miles of trails, natural streams, a covered picnic pavilion, 60 outdoor horse paddocks, a sand volleyball court and an impressive lighted outdoor arena, the possibilities are endless.
Once a buffalo ranch, the 800 acres is now home to an exclusive western retreat and vacationer’s paradise. The original rustic barn was restored into an elegant bed and breakfast using the original foundation, beams and barn boards. With 4200 square feet of country luxury, the barn house features 4 western themed bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, a majestic Great Room with a beautiful stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings, leather sofas, and hardwood floors. The fully-equipped kitchen has granite counter tops, bar seating, stainless steel appliances, and a large dining table. The Great Room leads outside to a private, full-length deck facing a horse pasture where you can enjoy grilling out or relaxing in our 8 person hot tub. Want to entertain a large party? Check out Miss Kitty’s Saloon. Although not a facility serving spirits, it houses saddle stools and a bar to enjoy your own beverages. There you can play a game of pool, darts, foosball, cards or dance to the jukebox. Located below the barn house living quarters is the stable with 8 premium stalls, tack room and wash rack. Nearby is the milk house (shower house) which houses a large walk-in shower and bath.
Not wanting plush accommodations?
Check out our bunk house which holds up to 6 people. Amenities include: 4 full size bunk beds, futon, microwave, mini refrigerator, TV and outdoor grill.
Big Valley Ranch is meant to be versatile. Let us know what kind of experience you are looking for and we will do our best to accommodate. Our piece of paradise is meant for anyone that wants to escape from the stressful, hectic lifestyle we often find ourselves in.

Summer Golf Getaway
Summer Golf Getaway
Our group of golfers is always looking for a great place to stay with great golf nearby. Big Valley Ranch exceeded all of our expectations. We enjoyed being together in the evening...BBQing, then into Miss Kitty's Saloon for fun. Our days were spent at the nearby The Springs Resort playing golf during the days. Even though it was summer, the hot tub was a great way to relax in the evening and get our bones going in the early AM. We can't wait to come back next year!

The Big Valley Ranch definitely exceeded our expectations! We knew about the ranch from friends and were waiting for an occasion to party there. The huge main floor was just perfect for that! It wasn't very clear from the pictures that the first floor is one big open space, so we were pleasantly surprised to find this out when we first walked in. The main floor has a living area, an amazing kitchen and a saloon -- all of which could easily accommodate 10+ people! The 4 bedrooms upstairs were tastefully done, and a big plus were the 3.5 bathrooms! I have been in houses with two bathrooms before, and those are not enough for 10+ people to all shower in the morning. The ranch is thematically decorated to the last detail! From the towel racks in the bathrooms being held by spurs, to the tall glasses in the bar whose stems were little cacti -- there wasn't a doorknob on a cabinet that did not go along with the rest of the house! The bar and kitchen were fully equipped - the first thing I did in the house was to open every drawer and cabinet, and I found everything I could need and more! The two dish washers was definitely appreciated! The ranch is not a place where one can be bored! We were constantly playing pool and darts inside, we made use of the jukebox as well. We were also given two complementary golf carts to explore the 800 acres of land surrounding the ranch. The porch was great! There was plenty of seating for everyone, we drank our morning coffee there and made smores in the afternoon. Most of all though we enjoyed the hot tub! It was ready and warm before we even got there! I recommend this house to anyone! It can suit a multitude of needs - if you are looking for a quiet place for a relaxing weekend, you can enjoy the fireplace and the many board games inside as well as the beautiful nature outside. If, like us, you're looking for a place to play loud music, mix drinks and hang out in a Jacuzzi - this is The Place!

Amazing/Truly a gem
Amazing/Truly a gem
This house was truly an amazing place. The pictures don't even do it justice to the beautiful design elements and details that make this place so unique. We stayed there with 3 other couples and the only thing we were unhappy about was that we didn't get to stay there for longer! We all thought it was the best adult playhouse we could have all dreamed of (pool table, slot machines, jute box, volleyball court, fire pit, golf carts, hot tub, and tons of misc games). The area around the house is all amazing for hiking and exploring. The bedrooms were very comfortable and everything was extremely clean. I would not hesitate recommending this to anyone who is going to be in 50 miles of this house.

Such a Special Place!
Such a Special Place!
I've traveled all over the world and I can honestly say that this ranch is one of the most picturesque (inside and out), comfortable, well-done, fun places I've ever been. My mom, mother-in-law, aunt, sister, nanny, nanny's mom, and friend all came together at the Big Valley Ranch for Mother's Day weekend. We went to Taliesin, which was so impressive and so close to the ranch, and spent wonderful together time making dinners, playing in the game room (pool, foosball, darts tournaments), enjoying the hot tub and deck, dancing to the jukebox, and hiking the property. I couldn't image a more perfect place. I can't wait to come back--my kids will love it!

One of the best getaways we've ever had!
One of the best getaways we've ever had!
We are 4 families (each with teenage kid) who stayed at Big Valley Ranch at President's day weekend. This property offers everything you can ask for: • great atmosphere • unique interior • plenty of room • many amenities • endless trails • board games, billiard, slot machine, electronic darts, jukebox This property has 4 bedrooms upstairs, which can easily accommodate 12-14 people. In addition to the standard beds in each bedroom there are folding beds to accommodate additional guests. We were there in the Winter and we were alone. If you are looking for quiet place to rest and relax we would definitely recommend you Big Valley Ranch. Keep in mind that it is functioning as a camp ground also and may be a little crowded in the Summer. Reservation process was hassle free. Communication quick and smooth.

We--a medium size group of young Madisonians--stayed at Big Valley Ranch at the beginning of March, 2013. It was absolutely fantastic. From the decor to the snowy trails we blazed, the experience was unbelievable. The house has everything one might need for a weekend stay--, foosball, pool, darts, a jukebox, an outdoor hot-tub (which is awesome in winter), and lots of open spaces both indoor and outdoor. It has two TVs but I don't think we even turned them on at all during the stay. There was no need! The reservation process was quick and easy. Sharon responds to emails quickly which was a must for people of our generation :). It wasn't too expensive--came out to about $100 per person with food--although that's in winter. Definitely cheaper than a trip to the dells and certainly just as fun. We didn't get a chance to go off the property and explore the surrounding area, but the town seemed quaint when we drove through it. All in all, we had an incredible time. We all kept commenting on the fact that we felt like we were on a real vacation as opposed to just a weekend away. We have definitely found a place for our future winter getaways and we can't recommend BVR enough for others.

Manager response: So happy you enjoyed your stay! It was so nice to hear that it felt like a vacation rather than a weekend get-away. I always tell folks "it is paradise" but guess I am biased. It is also nice to have the winter guests as most of our summer guests are horse people and we are going after that new market...."the outdoors person" or simply the person that wants to get away from it all. Thanks again for your kind words. So nice to have guests appreciate the place.
Had a Blast, Will Come Back
Had a Blast, Will Come Back
Booked this place thinking it had potential, but not sure about the layout. It exceeded expectations despite not being at full strength (more on that in a minute). The pictures don't make crystal clear that the living room, kitchen, and saloon are all one long, open area (most pics show barn doors closed). It's really perfect. We were there for a Packer football Sunday, and our group of 10 fanned out over the entire area, with the Packer fans taking over the bar yet still close enough to heckle the two Viking fans in the living room, and the evening's chef able to watch from the open kitchen. The bedrooms upstairs feel secluded despite the front rooms (which are the best two rooms) perching right on top of the bar - including a window downstairs in case you want to converse with the barflies. The construction is first rate (speaking as a contractor who's seen the full spectrum), and the level of detail is fantastic. Every room gets the full treatment - loved the John Wayne bathroom in particular. The pros far outweigh the cons, but in the interest of being thorough, the cons of our stay were as follows: - The top two items on my wish list when renting a place to gather in the country for New Year's Eve were a fireplace and a hot tub. This place has both - but neither was working when we were there. The hosts were responsive and apologetic, and promptly sent a mechanic out to try and revive the hot tub (the fireplace was pronounced dead shortly before we arrived). But there was no fix - so it's a good thing we enjoyed the bar, because we spent a lot of time in there. - Minor (and perhaps personal) con - The two "back" bedrooms in the main building are good for families, and I assume they rent to a lot of families. If you've got four couples, however, two are getting nicer rooms than the others. Finally, if you're not sure what to make of the bunk house, the good news is it's warm enough in the winter (and presumably cool enough in the summer). The bad news is it's the definition of bare bones. Just a big open room. Hope to come back to the Ranch next summer, and get to check out the property (and, fingers crossed, the hot tub). Really enjoyed our stay. Thanks to Sharon for all her help - and the prompt return of the deposit!

Manager response: Dear Brian, We were pleased to hear the comments on your stay. Most folks that visit, say words just don’t do us any justice describing the detail and décor. We will see if we can do a better job in describing the living quarters on VRBO. We felt horrible about the mechanical problems you encountered and sent maintenance out right after your stay. We are happy to announce that both items have been fixed. It was unfortunate that it happened. We were pleased to offer you a discount on a return visit and hope to see you back at the ranch. Thanks for your honest feedback. Sharon Ranch Manager

Our winter stay at Big Valley
Thank you for accommodating my family and me this Christmas. We were delighted to hear that the Big Valley Ranch was available for our holiday celebration. It is centrally located to all of us so the travel was easy. My sister and her family arrived first and were absolutely amazed and delighted with the house and décor. The house had the same impact on the rest of the family when they arrived. We love to eat and drink! Having a full kitchen and bar was simply perfect for us. We took advantage – cooked a ton of food and utilized most of the games during our stay. The snow was a blessing. We brought saucer sleds and blazed a few trails for all to enjoy. Our plan is to return next year for our annual celebration again. Would like exploring further out if possible. Thanks for preparing the house for us and for getting the driveway plowed in time, following the major snow storm. It was perfect! Sherri K.

Annual Spring Green road trip
Annual Spring Green road trip
I've been tempted to keep this outstanding vacation destination a secret, but that just wouldn't fit with the generous sense of welcome and hospitality offered by the owners and management of Big Valley Ranch. My family of 6 adults recently enjoyed a three-night stay in the Barn House and our one-word review of everything about the ranch is,indeed, BIG! Big house, big ranch, big views, big furnishings and amenities, and mostly, big hearts characterize Big Valley Ranch. The Barn House is a delight - beautifully and artfully furnished, down to the smallest details. Comfort, aesthetics and functionality have all been given top priority in its restoration, design and furnishings. The living and sleeping areas, abundant bathrooms, wonderful kitchen (better equipped than any of the many nice vacation homes we've rented in the past), fun-filled saloon and beautiful deck with its tranquil and expansive views of hills, horses, and big,big skies all create a true sense of destination travel....the familiarity of the Midwest is there, but there is also a terrific sense of 'out West' that comes from the scale of the house and surroundings. Ours wasn't a riding vacation, but the barn, paddocks and trails are deluxe and would make for some very lucky horse guests and their owners! For our purposes, the proximity of the ranch to Spring Green was perfect - an easy and scenic drive. We also enjoyed a walk through the beautiful and fascinating Avoca Prairie which is only a mile away. The last - and biggest - comment in this review is a BIG thank you to Les, Stacy and Sharon. Their hospitality is unique - their sincere and unhurried attention to our comfort and satisfaction made us feel like valued friends rather than paying guests. And, since our visit coincided with a holiday gathering of the owners' friends and family (they were concerned that this might bother us, as ranch rentals typically include exclusive use of the property, but we loved it and it only affected our stay in a positive way), we witnessed the amazing lengths they go to as hosts to create fun and memorable moments for their family and friends. We thank them for a perfect stay that ranks at the top of our Spring Green summer visits.

Fantastic Family Vacation
Fantastic Family Vacation
We enjoyed a fantastic family vacation at Big Valley Ranch this past summer. The barn house was absolutely beautiful and offered lots of space for six adults and two kids. We enjoyed cocktails on the huge deck and soaking in the hot tub, reading and visiting in the sitting areas of the barn house, and games and music in the Miss Kitty's Saloon. The kitchen was extremely well-equipped and had plenty of counter space to handle multiple cooks. Sharon was friendly, easy to work with, and very prompt with responses. Dave was also helpful and dropped off two golf carts for us (as we did not have horses) to explore the beautiful acreage of the ranch. This was our annual family vacation and all agreed that it was the best lodging our group has ever stayed at. The surrounding countryside is lovely and allows for day trips to Mineral Point, Spring Green, and Govenor Dodge State Park. We look forward to our return next summer!
