Atelier des Alpilles is perfectly located at the base of the Alpilles mountains and just one kilometer from the center of beautiful St. Remy de Provence. Built around the turn of the century, the Atelier des Alpilles was originally a barn and later converted to a painting studio and home by a local artist. In 2001, the property was purchased by an American who completely renovated the atelier. The home is "tres original" combining touches of Provence through color and charm but maintaining the chic factor of an artist's studio.
Atelier des Alpilles is the ideal place to explore all of Provence. You are within easy driving distance to such fabulous cities and towns as Les Baux, Avignon, Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Gordes, and Chateauneuf des Papes. It is the perfect location to enjoy the best of everything Provence has to offer.
The most dramatic feature of the house is the extremely large studio complete with 30-foot high ceilings and enormous floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to the spacious yard. The room has all-new furniture – two large couches and two rattan seats as well as a large bar tiled in the Provencal gold with black olives. A brand-new washer and dryer are located behind the bar. Two large, original paintings of the artist hang on the wall. It is a great place to read a book, play board games, or gather for pre-dinner cocktails.
A black-iron, spiral staircase leads up to a large loft where guests can sit quietly or venture out to the terrace and view the mountains. Two of the bedrooms, one with a queen-size bed and the other with two twin beds, are entered from the loft area. Both bedrooms are spacious, sunny, and feature brand-new beds, mattresses, down comforters, and plenty of storage. The furniture has simple lines and is decorated with floral-patterned linens. These two bedrooms share a brand new bathroom complete with a large mirror, powerful shower, and plenty of hot water.
Downstairs, the large kitchen and dining room are directly off the studio. The kitchen is a large room with terra-cotta floors, a wood-beam ceiling, and French doors that lead to the front garden. The kitchen table and six chairs sit next to a large fireplace, both designed by the artist. With a new oven, stove, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and full complement of pots, pans, and utensils the kitchen has everything for those who like to cook. Located in the pantry is a stereo with five-disc CD player that connects to speakers in the studio and the kitchen providing music throughout the house.
The master bedroom and sunrooms are located on the ground floor next to the kitchen. A set of French glass doors leads you to this very private section of the house. The room is graced with stone floors, a 200-year-old Chateau arch, and French doors that lead to an outdoor, teak dining set. The couch pulls out to a sleeper sofa for those families who may need the room for a small child. A large television sits in the corner (no satellite/cable) next to a café table and two chairs. The bed is tucked away behind another set of doors overlooking the sunroom and front garden.
The master bath features a large mosaic made of stone and shells that fills the wall and an old-fashioned, claw-footed tub that is perfect for a relaxing, lavender bath.
Outside the French doors from the sunroom sits a large, teak table with benches and chairs – the perfect place to end your day of sightseeing. Sip a glass of wine as you watch the sun set behind the mountains creating the famous display of colors that has inspired artists for centuries.
