Newland house description
The House at High Haven sits on a ridge at over 4000 feet and surrounded by 130 acres of forest and fields. It is easily accessible from Newland, and convenient to Banner Elk, Linville, Grandfather Mountain, and beyond.
This is a large house with three easily accessible floors.
The main floor features a full kitchen, dining area and an enormous wrap around living room which centers on the original large stone fireplace. A wall of glass doors along the entire west facing front of the house opens to a long open porch and provides continuous views of the outdoors. The main floor also contains two corner bedrooms with windows on two sides.
The upper and lower floors of the house have their own mini kitchens, dining areas, and full bathrooms. The upstairs is a romantic favorite with a double bed, separate access, bathroom, and its own balcony with grand views of the surrounding mountains. It can also double for a family with two additional single beds on their own platform. Downstairs can be divided into three rooms for large gatherings and is popular with kids who want their own access to the outdoors and parking.

A Most Excellent Place!
A Most Excellent Place!
What a wonderful, cool place to spend time in summer. We have visited several times and would spend time at High Haven each summer if we could. The owners are very accommodating and were not daunted when we held our family reunion there. The teenagers loved having the basement. Especially nice is the commitment of the landowners to the natural beauty and wildlife of the region. The view out the front windows and from the porch is magnificent. Grandfather Mountain is a very short distance and there are multiple activities there to compliment what is available at High Haven. You will love the town of Newland.

About the owner: The Hodnett and Nunez family have been coming here now through five generations. It is where we come to reunite and get reenergized by the mountains and each other.
Why the Owner Chose Newland:
Donna Hodnett found this land while on a search for a summer home in the mountain in the late 40s. When her car broke down in Newland, she discovered the mountain top she and her husband would call High Haven. A house was built almost immediately, survived a devastating fire in the 60's with an extensive remodeling and upgrading that has continued into the present. The 'elder' these days is Kay Nunez who often summers nearby when not at High Haven with family.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
It is hard to describe the feeling of heading up Hickory Nut Gap road from Newland into the cool fresh air of higher altitudes and space. There is room to walk through the open fields or even brave the 100 acres of dense woods that are now preserved as a natural area through the Blue Ridge Conservancy. It was the first land in the area to be so protected and includes watershed and habitat for endangered bog turtles, salamanders, and various wild flowers. A new project is the 2 acres 'Heritage Apple Orchard' being done in partnership with the Avery County Historical Society. Located near the entrance, the orchard provides an interesting stroll from the house.
