Addison house description
You'll love the isolation and privacy of this welcoming oceanfront house. Facing the water, the spacious house is situated in a broad clearing, surrounded heavily wooded acreage. It's the perfect place for relaxation and recreation. A short stroll to the private sand beach will convince you that you've found the perfect vacation rental.
From the moment you turn into the wooded lane at 313 Cape Splt Rd., you'll enter the Maine of yesteryear. Passing the lily pond, you'll be siezed by the urge to return with an easel and paintbrush to recreate the bucholic scene.
As the woods open to a large clearing, the rambling clapboard house with an attached barn is revealed. This typical Maine farmhouse faces Pleasant Bay where it joins the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape in front of the house includes a wide sloping lawn and a huge garden of beach roses. A winding path through the rose garden takes you to a beautiful sand beach, a rare find indeed, on the Maine Coast. This easily accessible beach is framed by evergreens and rugged rock outcroppings which jut out into the water. Several islands, including Mt. Desert Island in Acadia National Park, as well as the occasional lobsterboat, complete this most picturesque scene. You'll want to gather driftwood to prepare for a bonfire on the beach at the end of the day.
Once inside the house, nostalgia takes over. Many features of the house are the same as they were in the early 1930's when it was built. Vintage furnishings carry you back to your grandparents' time. Wide plank floors of hard pine are set with recessed hand forged nails, remeniscent of the craftmanship from the turn of the century. The floors are so solid that you'll never hear a squeak. Front and back stairs to the second floor are a rarity today and very convenient when a large group occupies the house.
A few of the area's many attractions include Bar Harbor, Campobello, the summer home of FDR's family, Acadia National Park, numerous lighthouses, intriqueing small towns, driving the Maine coastline, blueberry picking, enjoying lobster rolls, and visiting a wide variety of galleries, along with boating, fishing, and wading in the surf.
Among the on site activities are hiking, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, exploring the shoreline, visiting the islands, shelling, or reading or napping on the big window seat in the bay window of the living room.
After an active day, you'll be ready for an evening of relaxation, fine dining, and good company. Stop at the South Addison Wharf on your way home to pick up fresh lobster. ( $4.00 a lb in 2011! ) Gather on the sunporch to unwind and watch the spectacular sunset over the water. Then move on to the enormous oak dining room table and enjoy a repast of the sweetest, most succulent lobster you've ever tasted. After dessert, stroll to the beach and reminisce to the dancing light of the bonfire. If the weather doesn't cooperate, gather round the fireplace in the living room to complete the evening.
Our family is drawn back to Cape Split year after year. The place is simply one of a kind, a rare treasure among vacation rentals. It is every bit as seductive as Maine's dramatic coastline. We are so glad the owners have decided to share this magical place with the general public.

Best Vacation Ever!
Best Vacation Ever!
My husband and I along with our two boys ages 2 and 4 and my parents were lucky enough to spend a week in this paradise. The description is very accurate- total piece and serenity. The boys spent hours on the very private beach, walking the trails and in the rocks catching crabs. On two occasions we rowed out to Sheep Island, about a 20 minute row where we walked along the shores and collected "treasures" as the kids called it. The water is crystal clear and clean. The beach was actually closer to the house than I had thought from the pictures which was a welcome surprise. We were lucky enough to see a bald eagle fly along the beach and land on a nearby tree, which the kids were very excited about. We also saw a porcupine and a fox on a drive one day, which the kids had also never seen in the wild. My kids are crazy about fishing, almost obsessively, so we were so happy when we drove down to the lobster dock one day and the guys down there were so welcoming. They told us that we could catch pollack at high tide from the dock and boy were they right. My husband and father took the boys to the lobster docks every day at high tide and it seemed that every cast resulted in a pollack. The kids were in their glory and I was so impressed with how wonderful the guys on the docks were with the kids. We bought lobster every day right from the dock(a 4 minute drive from the house) at 3.75 a pound( cheaper than hamburger!) The house was perfect. There is a large bay window with the most comfortable bench that we sat at all the time. You can look out at the ocean and the lobster boats from most every room of the house. The sun room has a tv with satellite which came in very handy for the kids on rainy days. The wifi was also a bonus. I cannot tell you how much the washer and dryer were appreciated. Our kids played hard and sure had the dirty clothes to show for it, so it was so helpful to be able to wash them while we were there. We also loved the outdoor shower after coming off a day at the beach. The kitchen has every utensil or cooking item you could ever need and a fully stocked cabinet full of lobster eating utensils. For us, the thing that made this the best place is the total privacy. You cannot see or hear another neighbor. When you look out at the ocean, all you see is water, there are no houses or lights across the bay. You literally are in your own world, yet a 20 minute drive can get you to a gas station and grocery store. Truly, heaven on earth.

Memorable 2 Week Vacation
Memorable 2 Week Vacation
Our family had been searching for several years for the perfect spot in the Downeast area and we finally found it at this location. The house welcomes you from the moment that you enter the drive with a beautiful lily pond and the beauty continues with every corner that one turns at this historic home on an unbelievably private tree farm. The home is indescribable and at the end of our two week stay I had to yet to absorb all that it held. The home is well-appointed, beyond comfortable, and includes everything that one might need (and then some) while living at the beach. The rosebush filled path to the private beach is remarkable as is the private beach. We traveled by boat with our grandchildren to nearby islands and it was an amazing experience. The wharf for fresh lobster is within 2 miles and Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor within an hour. We have vacationed annually for many, many years in many different locations along the East Coast and this home was beyond our expectations with not a moment of disappointment for the old or the young. Thanks! Brenda, Robert, & Family

Perfect Family Retreat
Perfect Family Retreat
Our family of five rented this house the week of July 4th. It is a spacious, solid farmhouse with loads of charm and history. The 42 acres of private wooded trails is wonderful for exploring. But the real gem is the backyard; a 1 acre open field bordered by a thick, seemingly endless grove of pink and white rose bushes, through which a small trail takes you out to a long stretch of sandy beach on the Atlantic Ocean. We spent much time exploring the private beach and the nearby rocks, collecting crab shells, clam shells and polished sandstones. As the days unfolded, we ventured out to hike along the wooded trails and along the coastline. We also visited nearby retaurants and gallaries in surrounding towns. Within the town of S. Addison we found our way to the local pier just as the daily catch was being brought in by the lobsterman. Ruthie, the owner of the operation came out to greet us happily and gave us a tour of all the goings on, giving the kids a tutorial on lobsters and the economics of market prices. We bought lobsters right from the dock (only $5 per lb!), brought them back and cooked them in a pot of boiling water over a fire on the beach. The kids delighted in their first lobster dinner. At night, when we weren’t cooking smores by the campfire, we were playing board games or chess in the game room/sun room of the house. In the morning, the kids’ favorite activity was drawing, coloring, or writing by the huge floor to ceiling bay window in the living room, which overlooks the ocean and Sheep Island. Speaking of Sheep Island, it is located about ½ mile from shore and is an easy row with the ’12 aluminum boat found in the shed (life preservers can be found in the loft above). It took me about ½ hour to reach the island with two of the kids in tow, and was well worth it. Exploring the deserted island for starfish, sand dollars, and the abundance of drift wood was a Robinson Crusoe-like experience that the kids and I will never forget. When we got back, Mary had the fire going on the beach and we cooked hotdogs on a stick. Perhaps the best part of the whole vacation was the fact that we brought the dogs with us. Our newfoundlands felt like they had come home, they simply loved everything about Cape Split. They stayed by our side the whole time everywhere we went. We exclaimed several times on the ride home that it was one of, if not the best vacation we have ever had. We are already on the schedule for two weeks next year.

Owner response: Tom and Mary have described beautifully the unique experience that awaits you at Cape Split. It is a "one of a kind property". There's no more relaxing place to visit. The isolation of the property, the natural beauty of the surroundings, and the charm of a house filled with nostalgia from the Maine of yesteryear is very seductive.

What a glorious vacation! Such a beautiful, solid, accomodating and welcoming home and in such a picturesque and private location. We've returned here many times and each time is better than the last, the perfect spot for vacationing with extended family. From an early morning walk on the expansive beach to the fresh lobster dinner, every moment is savored. The views are gorgeous and the lilly pond is special. The house is so completely furnished one has only to enjoy it. The very short jaunt to the lobster pier in South Addison is a unique experience which has it's rewards with an abundance of unbelievably inexpensive lobster. The perfect down east vacation. Can't wait to return.
