The first floor accommodation in the main house includes all amenities with a private entrance and is accessible for guests with limited mobility.
The kitchen is every gourmet’s dream! Cookware hangs from pothooks overhead, shelves are filled with china service and the over-sized pantry allows storage for all your favorite foods. A breakfast area hosts a million dollar view of the densely wooded nature preserve and opens to a private deck with tables and umbrellas for outdoor festivities. The pride and joy of any chef, is the 6-burner, 2-oven, Five Star professional stove. A heavy-duty washer/dryer combo completes the service area.
The Carriage House is a fully equipped apartment suite with its own eat-in kitchen, refrigerator, range, microwave and coffee maker, living room, cable TV, paddle fans, separate master bedroom, private bath, individually controlled heat and air, plus a large private deck for quiet time spent bird watching or counting the stars. The master bedroom, with its queen-sized four-poster bed, features two closets and an amazing view of the nature area and mountains that border this beautiful property. The living room trundle bed allows two additional guests to sleep comfortably. The Carriage House also welcomes pets, with prior notice.
Relax in The Library and peruse the hundreds of publications that cover these walls. In cooler weather, a robust fire welcomes all who enter and after dark, a spectacular chandelier casts a magical glow on this magnificent room.
The Parlor is an ideal place to socialize. An alcove bar, with refrigerator, is where you will find a refreshing beverage or snack, while an antique piano waits for someone to entertain. French doors open to the garden terrace, overlooking the croquet lawn and woodlands.
The Dining Room is resplendent with an ornate fireplace mantle and group seating under a magnificent Murano Glass chandelier. A collection of board games and cards are available for a friendly game of Scrabble or gin rummy.
Find a comfortable spot on one of three verandas and deck areas and breathe in the purest air in the country and enjoy all the beauty that surrounds us. Then you will discover what has attracted guests to these mountains for over 130-years!

About: Dale Potruski, of Detroit, MI and Donna Gast, from Rochester, NY, met in Central Florida and were married in May of 1990 in an outdoor ceremony attended by family and friends at Lake Eola Park in Orlando. Donna’s focus at the time was raising two daughters, while furthering her career in the hospitality industry. Dale earned his Bachelors Degree in Journalism from The University of Central Florida while working in area hotels, restaurants and nightclubs. Collectively, Donna and Dale have over half a century of food and beverage/hospitality experience. Their resumes include such recognized “five-star” properties as Disney World, The Peabody, Orlando; The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, Jacksonville; as well as Florida State University in Tallahassee. While living in Palm Beach, Donna worked at the Ritz-Carlton and Dale at The Breakers. In 1993 they decided to combine their experience and passion for the service industry and pursue an interest in becoming professional innkeepers. Their initial foray into the business saw them relocate to St. Marys, Ga. As the southern-most village in coastal Georgia, they catered to guests visiting Cumberland Island and King’s Bay navel installation “We made many friends in those days,” Dale will tell you. 'Some of which have stayed with us here at The Oaks.” From there, Donna and Dale continued to hone their skills as innkeepers in the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, FL. Donna remembers, “We worked hard and loved every minute!' They would delve back into a corporate existence, but held onto the dream of owning a historic home to share with guests. “From our previous experience, we knew exactly what we were looking for and what we wanted to offer our guests” and in 2006, they moved to North Carolina to take ownership of The Oaks. Dale and Donna continue to demonstrate the same passion and enthusiasm for their beautiful vintage home and the guests that visit from around the world.
To experience the Blue Ridge Mountains is to know one of the most beautiful places on earth. You will discover an environment that satisfies every human desire and stimulates your senses in a way you never thought possible. The Oaks is a beautifully restored Queen Ann Victorian, built in 1895, the same year that George Vanderbilt finished his home in nearby Asheville. Built as a physician’s home, The Oaks offers every comfort and detail and provides guests a unique glimpse of how a family of privilege might have lived all those years ago. With its fireplaces, chandeliers and verandas, you can imagine how it must have been when guests visiting Saluda arrived by carriage or train and stayed the entire season. The village of Saluda, only three blocks from The Oaks, is as quaint and charming a town as you will ever find. Main Street appears much as it did over a hundred years ago and is still home to its library, City Hall, police department, general store and post office. Every storefront proudly wears the badge of the National Historic Registry and makes the perfect setting for shopping, antiquing, dining and entertainment. Many painters, sculptors, jewelers, writers and poets find inspiration in Saluda as well as chefs and musicians, making this unique mountain community a haven for creativity. A few nationally recognized painters live amongst us in anonymity, satisfied to call Saluda home. Discovering a vintage home such as this is a rare find; it’s like looking upon a work by Rembrandt or Monet, holding a rare diamond, or falling in love. Come share this incredible experience.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We originally became smitten with this area as tourists. We established a “wish list” of what we wanted in our next home. At the top of that list was the desire to be “in or near a (historic) town or village” that would provide us restaurants, shopping, entertainment and a social environment to share with guests and friends. Next, we looked for a location with four distinct seasons and a mild year-round climate. A home with an expansive front porch that would allow us the space to enjoy comfortable afternoons and starlit nights. We thought the perfect home should be in a pollution-free environment with lots of trees ans access to parks, trails, lakes and streams. While we would enjoy a genuine feeling of independence, we also had to have access to the cultural advantages of theater, malls and an airport. A calendar of seasonal festivals and events, celebrating local arts and culture, would be nice we thought – a reason to get out and explore. Finally, to find a home of historical architectural significance would be the icing on the cake! Ultimately, we wanted a home to share. A home that would provide guests a warm and comfortable place to gather with family, friends and co-workers. . . A home where people can create mountain memories to last a lifetime!
