Saugatuck cottage description
The historic riverfront Treehouse Cottage sits high above the Kalamazoo River connecting Saugatuck to Lake Michigan. The cottage is a short walk (3-4 regular blocks) to Saugatuck's downtown attractions, shops and restaurants. A large screened porch overlooks the river and opens into the living room and kitchen creating a flowing indoor/outdoor life style. The view of the river boating traffic and wildlife from this porch is unbelievable. Recent remodeling upgrades include a cathedral ceiling in the living room, new carpeting and a large screened HD TV and a hot tub overlooking the river. Treehouse sleeps up to 8 people.
The ground level Master bedroom has a queen bed. There is a hide-a-bed sofa in the adjoining dining/living room. The lower level has two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a set of twin beds. The cottage has central air-conditioning throughout. The cottage is naturally cooled by the river/lake breezes and the over head fans throughout. There are bathrooms with showers on both levels of the cottage. There are also complete kitchens on both floors with a washer/dryer in the lower level. The lower level also has a covered deck spanning the entire width of the cottage which mimics the great views of the screened porch. There is a nice lawn on the river level that is ideal for lounging, games or enjoying the fire pit.
Fishing from this level is usually good and small boats or jet skis can be tied up to the seawall. Weekly rentals take priority. However, three to four day rentals are possible in the off season or on short notice as are rentals of just the upper or lower level units. Pets are allowed with the owner's approval and a small damage deposit/fee.

The views from the cottage were extremely pleasing from both levels of porches. The photos of the home were a little misleading; ie, the upper kitchen and the lower bedroom with twin beds. The queen bed mattress downstairs needs to be replaced. But for the most part, cottage was as described. The walk to town was more than the three blocks as described, but still do-able with smaller children. The cottage needs to be fully air conditioned and the owner said that may happen in the near future. Since it is an older cottage, some windows were painted shut so we couldn't take full advantage of the lake breeze. The owner recommended restaurants and sites to us which was helpful. It was a short drive to Oval Beach which was lots of fun. The WiFi worked on occasion, mostly outside . To be fair, the owner said we should have informed him, that he might have been able to correct the problem. The lower level was musty, but maybe that's due to the river location??? There is parking for 2 or 3 cars which is a plus... Bottom line, this property is overpriced for what you get inside, so you are paying for the beautiful location and views of all the boats passing into the lake. Very peaceful.

Owner response: We want to thank these guests for their stay and for providing us feedback which we value and take seriously. We have now added central air conditioning to the cottage for those hot summer days and have solved the WiFi issue and it is working beautifully throughout the cottage. The walk to downtown is 3 - 4 regular city blocks as our information states. Most of the guests find it is just a nice walk. The cottage was rented extensively throughout the summer and all the other feedback we got was very positive.

About the owner: Our names are Jan & Gary Kemp and we have been married, to each other, for 48 years - a rare feat today it seems. We have lived in the Saugatuck area most of those years and know alot about what there is to do and see in the area. Gary's a former sales/marketing executive a Fortune 500 office furniture manufacture. Jan worked in sales for Xerox and the Avon Company and retired with 20 years of local real estate brokerage experience. We also own and operate Marywood Manor Bed & Breakfast during the summer season and spend winters on our 44 ft catamaran sailing in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. We promise an enjoyable stay in the Treehouse Cottage and will do everything we can to make it happen. Please call us if you have any questions about the Treehouse Cottage, the Saugatuck area or sailing. We'd love to talk with you.
Why the Owner Chose Saugatuck:
We brought the 'Tree House Cottage' for our personal use because we thought we would live in it after we retired. We then brought the house next door when it came up for sale several years later as it had a much larger lot for Jan to enjoy her love of gardening. After remodeling the home we decided to live in it and to keep the cottage as a guest house and summer rental.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The view from the screened porch is spectatular. You can sit and watch boats come and go all day. It's just a nice walk to downtown for dinner or a yummy coffee at the local coffee house. The heavily forested property across the river gives you the feeling of real privacy as you watch deer drinking at the river in the early morning and evening. Throughout the fall the colors of the trees change and provide many beautiful scenes and reflections in the water. Early in the morning haze, while you sip your coffee, the charter fishing boats go out the river for a day of salmon and trout fishing. Sitting on the porch is truely a peaceful experience as is sitting in the hot tub on a cool evening as the boats return to their docks
