Port Austin house description
This updated, 19th Century Victorian charmer sits atop sandstone cliffs overlooking Alaskan Bay on Lake Huron. Surrounded on three sides by fabulous lake views, you can also enjoy the perennial garden and the spicy fragrance of over 50 lush rose bushes while using the gas grill and sipping a cool drink before dining on the cobblestone patio or in the fully windowed dining area. The sandy beach is only a three minute stroll away; although the kids also love to ride their bikes there.
Pointe Aux Barques is a quaint gated community that encompasses acres of woodlands full of deer and other wildlife critters, with stretches of lovely sand beaches and sandstone cliffs. Pointe Aux Barques is home to one of the nation's oldest golf courses. Summer brings lots of activities for PAB - golf tournaments, tennis tournaments, Kid's Club Day Camp, Hay rides, bonfires and marshmallows, Sunday sailboat races, cookouts and baseball games.
Our cottage sleeps a maximum of eight people quite comfortably in five bedrooms, and provides three full baths. Best of all, the family room is surrounded by direct views of the bay stretching out to the point and beyond to the horizon. Plus the family room has two floor to ceiling wooden sliding doors that allow easy access to the gardens and grassy lawn, all overlooking the lake.

Beautiful Views, Great Place
Beautiful Views, Great Place
8 Women went up to this lovely cottage end of September 2011. We had the most wonderful time, it accomadated us perfectly. Plenty of space, fabulous views, we enjoyed it immensely. We walked thru the woods, walked along the beach all the way around the tip of the bay that can be seen from the house; played golf; walked thru the entire community; cooked dinner at the house; went out for dinner at some nice places; couple gals brought their bikes and biked around the community and down the main road; played games; listened to the hollowing winds that Mother Nature gave and boy can Lake Huron talk to you. That was amazing how strong that wind can be, but we were still out there walking and enjoying!!! We would certainly recommend this spot to anyone. We've been going away weekends together now for we think 13 years now and we have gone all over Michigan. We will be back next year, we've pretty much decided. The folks that live in this private community are very welcoming and a couple stopped by to chat with us, and even invite us into their home to see the history and the beauty of that specific home. Quite a few of these homes are well over 100 years old. With that there are very specific rules that everyone must adhere to, and believe me that is no problem - in fact they're common sense rules. The beauty of the area is wonderful. Highly recommend this area to anyone. Thanks to the owners of this lovely home - we loved it!!!! See you next year!!! Sincerely, The Pearl Girls

This is a 100 year old farm house. The room shown in the pictures is a new addition, which is very nice. However, 4 or the 5 bedrooms are uninhabitable: old mattresses complete with bed bugs (not kidding); original wallpaper that is torn and stained throughout the home; old sheets and stained pillows; musty smell; chipped paint throughout; large cracks in the walls; original windows, many with no window coverings and one that is broken; original rugs that are worn down to nothing and smell. We kept our 2 children with us in the master bedroom, as it was the only room that wasn't a potential health hazard. Mold and lead paint were serious concerns of ours. In addition, many of the "antiques" were not functional; such as, drawers that wouldn't open and clocks that no longer worked. Many of the closets and much of the kitchen was overly cluttered with the owners' possessions as well. We learned that many of the homes in this community have been handed down over the generations. There is a stigma to being a "renter" in this community. Also, there are many "rules" and the neighbors take such rules very seriously. On our last night, we had friends visit us and we had a bonfire in a community designated firepit. We were told we needed to put out the fire because we hadn't obtained a permit from the Fire Marshall. There were 6 adults; all in our 30s and 40s sitting quietly by the fire and minding our own business. Although we were complying with the request to let the fire burn itself out, three neighbors arrived in golf carts with buckets of water and doused our fire. On the first day of our arrival, we were instructed to immediately move my parents' 13 foot boat off the property and to park it next to the community clubhouse, despite the fact that we informed the owner that the boat would only be on the property for one day. I was not able to find this particular rule in the long detailed list of rules, which was not provided to us until the second day of our vacation. In addition, sleeveless shirts are prohibited on the golf course and tennis courts. While bike riding, we talked to a woman who is paid by the homeowner's association to watch Pointe Aux Barques' private beaches to ensure that kayakers do not touch foot anywhere on the property. On the positive side, the garden, the view, the beach, and the water were spectacular. However, the home and the community was a HUGE disappointment overall.

About the owner: Our family has been coming to Pointe Aux Barques for 50 years. We love to walk the beaches on quiet mornings, stroll them in the afternoon while visiting with other families sunning on the beach, or in the evening as we catch our breath watching the sunset over the lake. The community is friendly and fun - we have golf and tennis tournaments, sand castle building contests, campfires and s'mores. It has been our children's favorite place for over 25 years as we connect with all of the aunts, uncles and cousins every summer.
