My schooling brought me to Lexington from Nebraska to complete a clinical rotation in town. I am so pleased to say that when I saw the cottage inside and out the pictures online don't do it justice, it was absolutely amazing! I brought my travel buddy, Tucker (yorkie), with me and there was plenty of room for him to play and chase rabbits in the yard! Mark was absolutely wonderful, any questions I had he answered and offered suggestions to local attractions as I would be staying for some time. I can't thank him enough for his wonderful hospitality, it was very nice to know he was only a phone call away! The location is great, just minutes from shopping, grocery, restaurants, and New Circle Road which made getting around a piece of cake. This was a great place to stay, everything I needed was at the cottage, and it felt like home coming back from work everyday. Thanks again Mark, I really appreciate it, Tucker too! :)Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: It was a pleasure having you all stay at the Cottage. The time you spent with us seemed to go by very quickly. I am glad that the Cottage pleased you and helped to give you a favorable opinion concerning your stay in Central Kentucky. Sincerely, Mark Whaley

We rented the Stone Cottage from Mark as we were attending the Rolex Three Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park. The accommodations were just as they are described, and Mark was great to work with. The house was large and was equipped with all that a person would need to make the visit comfortable. There were plenty of linens, and kitchen amenities, as well as a good size yard and patio. The home is just minutes from the airport making our very early morning flight bearable. We are just a couple of miles from groceries, restaurants, and entertainment. It was about 15 minutes from the Kentucky Horse Park, making our travels a breeze. We are involved in Pony Club, and the National Pony Club hosts the National Competition in Lexington every three years. I recommend this property to any club member. You can trust Mark to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My wife and I went down to Lexington for keeneland races with are small dogs. The stone cottage is a nice little home away from home. We had everything thing we needed while staying. Enjoyed the peace and quiet of the location. Very close to Keeneland. Are small dogs enjoyed the large back yard. The owners were wonderful and answered all questions I had. Will be coming back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.
Owner response: It was a pleasure having you as guests. Being EMT's I know that you and your wife need an occasional break from the stress that goes along with being a first responder and saving lives. We were delighted to provide the Cottage as a Keeneland retreat. Please contact us anytime. You will always be welcome at the Stone Cottage. Mark

We stayed in the cottage while visiting our son in Lexington over Christmas. The house is great. They even provided a Christmas tree for our stay which was great on Christmas morning when we opened presents. It is a great place to stay and very convenient for multiple places in Lexington as it right off New Circle Road.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.
Owner response: It was nice to have Byron and his family stay with us over Christmas. His sons house was very close to the cottage and he had booked his dates very early in the season. I wanted Byron's family to have a nice Christmas Holiday so I set the tree up complete with lights as it sets the proper mood for such an occasion. If you should decide to return to KY for a visit please remember the Stone Cottage as we sincerely appreciate your business and look forward to hearing from you anytime. Mark

We stayed at the Stone Cottage over Thanksgiving. We were able to prepared our Thanksgiving meal there and went to the the UK game on Saturday. The yard was peaceful and was a great place for my sons to throw a football, and for our dog to run. The location is very easy to get to and conveniently located to Lexington attractions. The owner is extremely helpful and easy to get in contact with. It was a nice place to stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners.
Owner response: Thanks Tina, Thanks for the nice review. I know that the location was a mid way point for you and your sons who are attending the University of Tennessee so you may not be back to Lexington any time soon but if you do decide to comme back to central Ky I hope you will consider staying with us again as it was truly our pleaseur having you and your family as guests at the Cottage. Mark

My Mom and I, along with my 2 boxers stayed from Saturday – Thursday at this wonderful home. It had more than enough room and well maintained. Very pet friendly and the basement was a great place for the boxers to stay when Mom and I left the house for a couple of hours. The home has everything you need to spend a week or more. You cannot ask for a better owner to rent from. Mark wants to ensure your stay is a pleasant one. One day, I locked Mom and me out of the house. As soon as I realized what I did, I called Mark and he came to the rescue quickly. Mom and I really enjoyed sitting on the back patio every evening, quite and relaxing. The boxers loved to run in the huge backyard. If we are ever back in the area, we will stay here again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank You Sharon, It was a pleasure to have Sharon and her mother as guests at the Stone Cottage. They were from South Carolina and had that southern charm and accents that make you want to move further south. Sharon made a couple of wonderful suggestions that we will be tending to. It is nice to have female guests come and stay who can spot minor things that I as a male over look, as women are so much better than men when it comes to detailes. Sharon also thoroughly cleaned the house before she departed leaving it spotless. They were such nice people and the boxers were well mannered and obeyed Sharon like she was a professional dog trainer, she could let them run in the yard and tell them to return to her side and even when there were rabbits and squirrels distracting them. Sharon could rein them in with just her voice. I wish my dog were half that obedient. I look forward to Sharon and her traveling companions possibly returning to the Bluegrass. Mark

I traveled to Lexington with two adults and two kids 3 and 6 and stayed in the Stone Cottage. There was plenty of room and it was clean. Linens were new. The kitchen could use a few more items like a strainer for pasta, but well equipped. I had some trouble with the windows and the dryer but Mark the owner was responsive and eager to please. The weekend we went was soggy and we didn't get to use the ample grounds much. There was a pair of geese who every evening wandered down the driveway for a hand out. All in all I would recommend staying here. Beats a hotel in so many ways in my opinion, I sat outside and read, listening to birds and watching the sun set.Recommended for: People with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you Donna, We appreciate the kind comments and the nice review. I will get a pasta strainer as everyone likes pasta and mac and cheese. We will also be leaving a letter of introduction for our guests on the desk in the living room with important information about the cottage like internet access as well as additional emergency phone numbers for the guests to contact us should a problem arise. It was a pleasure to have you as a guest. Sincerely, Mark Whaley

About the owner: We have owned and enjoyed the property for over twenty years, it is a great place to relax and get away from it all. The natural area where the spring is located attracts various types of wild life. We really enjoy feeding the ducks and when the babies hatch out each spring it is a wonderful feeling to be able to treat the little ducklings to there first crumbs of bread. There is also a larger lake with fountains directly across the street named Saddle Club Lake. At certain times of the year both ducks and geese visit the property and the surrounding lakes ponds and streams, of which there are many in the area. The facility is quite nice and is located in an upscale, peaceful rural neighborhood. We feel confident that you will enjoy The Stone Cottage and Calumet Spring and the quiet natural environment.
Why the Owner Chose Lexington:
Lexington is a unique city, not too large and yet not too small either. Lexington is a good safe place to live, work and visit. We prefer the Keeneland side of Lexington so naturally we fell in love with the property when we first saw it. We particularly like the detailed stone work on the cottage and the rural setting. The property is situated across the street from Saddle Club Lake and the Fountains. This makes for a pleasant view as you tour the surrounding area. We also enjoy the wild critters that come to visit the spring that is on the grounds in the back yard. In this hectic world Calumet Spring provides the proper setting to unwind and relax in a private tranquil setting.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
The trees in the yard are quite large and mature. They provide adequate shade on hot sunny days. The brick patio is a very private area and is equipped with lawn furniture and a out door gas grill.
Guests will also appreciate the wildlife, rabbits, squirrels and the song birds that frequent Calumet Spring to drink and bathe. The colorful birds fill the air with pleasant sounds, quite often it is like a winged symphony as there are so many birds singing and chirping during mating season. Every spring there is a new crop of baby ducks hatched out. Wild ducks come and go daily during the warmer months as they seem to like the fresh spring water. At certain times of the year we also have geese and an occasional Blue Heron that comes to visit the spring as well.
Calumet Spring is country living in the city of Lexington. If you like privacy and nature you will enjoy your visit to Calumet Spring and the woods / nature area of this three acre property.
