We built our three-season cottage in 1991 to a traditional design featuring lots of warm wood, Deer Isle granite countertops and a wood stove . It is nestled in a woodlands at the end of a long, quiet road. Downstairs, a living room looks out through floor-to-ceiling windows to a view of the islands of Penobscot Bay. A built-in bookcase is stocked with books about Deer Isle, the Downeast area and many unique surprise reads . A wood dining table next to the windows is where we usually prefer to eat. Off the Living Room is a Bedroom with a wood antique double bed, side tables, dresser, and bureau. A Bath is furnished with an authentic claw-foot tub and shower . The Kitchen is equipped with a four burner gas stove, microwave, toaster, fridge with a generous freezer compartment, and a wood desk. Off the kitchen is a Utility Room with a stacked washer/dryer, storage space and plenty of hooks to hang outdoor clothes .
A flight of native spruce open stairs brings you to the upstairs lofts . The back loft has sleeping accommodations for 2 – 4 people including a double bed and roll out single bed and a bureau . The front loft has several old rocking chairs a single cot and a sofa to read, nap, or just enjoy the view of the ocean and islands beyond, or, the glorious sunsets .
A large deck , most of which is covered, is a wonderful place to spend time in any weather, and an outdoor gas grill is just what’s called for when cooking the local native seafood . The cottage sits on a bluff, with a set of wooden steps which lead down to the rocky beach where you can wander in either direction for hours , or take a bracing dip in the ocean.
Deer Isle is first and foremost a fishing island and Maine’s leader in lobster landings . But, the beauty of the island and the friendly, relaxed pace of the islanders has attracted many folks “from away”, bringing with them a rich diversity of interests. Prominent in the life of the island is the large and accomplished Arts and Crafts community . Galleries abound with a variety of skills and styles on display. The historic Opera House in Stonington, ( a 15 minute drive from the cottage), has a unique history and is now established as a cultural center with films, live performances and theater throughout the summer season. The island is a strong supporter of its natural history and there are numerous hiking trails to hidden vistas and pocket beaches.
Deer Isle maintains an island culture, but is connected to the Mainland by a causeway and a bridge. The nearest sizeable town is Blue Hill, a 20 minute drive. The Shire town is Ellsworth, about 45 minutes drive. There are many things to discover on the mainland, but a must –see is Acadia National Park about 1 ¼ hours drive from the cottage . This is a wonderful place to sight-see by car, bike or to enjoy hiking from easy beginner trails to challenging hikes that expert hikers yearn for.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1991
About the owner: Sandy and Larry split their time between their year-round home on Eggemoggin Reach in Deer Isle and a condo in Boston. Three sailboats ( all wooden!) keep them busy during summers, as do the 4 children and 9 grandchildren they share .
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Our family refers to this as 'The McKenna McCottage', a place where they can get back to a simpler way of life in one of the most beautiful areas you can imagine. We like day trips to Acadia National Park or Isle au Haut, but we make sure to get back before evening so we can sit on the porch and watch the gorgeous sunsets over the off-shore islands, seemingly more spectacular each evening .
