A year ago on 2-27-2012 Chuck and I got married and I went into for surgery right afterwards not having a Honeymoon. We decided this year to go ahead and take a little trip somewhere local. We tried thinking of a place where neither of us had gone before. We chose Orcas Island. After some searching we decided on The Gnome House. It was an Excellent Choice. Other then the weather everything was great. It would have been better if there were more places open to eat at. But being we had a little kitchen we ate most of our meals at The Gnome House. Everything was available for our use. Dishes, flatware, cooking pans and so forth.. It was very cozy. The inside decor was very nice and the work that went into building it was amazing. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. I hope to come back again. Only in the spring or summer though.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you! It was a pleasure to meet you both. The Gnome House is so cozy and romantic, that many other visitors have thought it the perfect spot for a honeymoon also. Mid-week in February does mean more limited restaurant choices on the island;so hopefully you will return for a Spring or Summer or Fall visit to enjoy the full gamut. Orcas Island's rain shadow location means outdoor activities are enjoyed throughout the year. And the hot tub is especially great when the weather is cooler, too. All happiness to you both, Meg and Bob

I enjoyed this rental with some friends, during the Secret Season-- and it is the BEST kept SECRET in vacationing! Orcas Island is a place of awe-inspiring natural beauty, and the construction of the Gnome House, it's placement on the property, and the surrounding amenities magnify it! Many cultures, such as the Japanese, use nature's architecture to inspire their own art, design, and architecture: in this place you can cleary experience why that is! The Connors are truly two of the most generous, hospitable people whom I have ever met. Their dog, a congenial Golden Retriever, named Cedar is a terrific and homey accessory. The outdoor hottub is so great, it almost makes you forget there is a bracing ocean a stone's throw from where you are soaking. Every time I return to the Gnome House, I notice some new detail or meet some new Gnome peeking out from under an eave or branch. Insomniacs pay attention: no one cannot get the best night's sleep of their life in the sleeping "cubby", the walls of which are hand painted, one scene including a Gnome bottle-feeding a baby rabbit!! Nightmares be gone!!! I highly recommend the Secret Season-- all of the tourist crowds and inconveniences are gone, and I have always had great luck with the weather, since the Islands get so much more sun than Seattle. It is the time of year when you can really relax and enjoy the Island in its natural state. Also, the price is right! Whether you are looking for a quick getaway from Seattle, or visiting from another country, the Gnome House-- and Maggie's Mannor for groups that need a little more space and creature comfort-- are the ultimate way to experience all that the great Pacific Northwest has to offer. Thank you Bob and Meg, for sharing it with all of us!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

In the past decade I have stayed at the Gnome house many times. It is like a European Chalet in that it is quaint, beautifully made, quiet, and surrounded by natural beauty. The owners are sweet as can be and I felt completely at home. Orcas Island is one of the most beautiful places on earth and this is one of the best ways to see it.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children.

My family and I have stayed numerous times at both of the Connor's vacation rentals; the Gnome House and Maggie's Manor. The Gnome House is truly a treasure, nestled into one of the most pristine and relaxing settings in the country. The natural beauty that surrounds this vacation rental is incomparable and whether you take a stroll through the grounds, a soak in the hot tub under the stars, or sit in a comfortable chair and look out over the beautiful harbor, all of your stress will melt away. And all of this beauty is second only to the beauty and craftsmanship that went into constructing the Gnome House. From the cozy sleigh-bed, to the beautiful wooden staircase, no detail is overlooked. It is a wonderful place to stay whether you are looking for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. The owners of this vacation rental are amazing people who go to great lengths to ensure that your stay is truly memorable. They love their island and will bend over backward to make sure that you experience everything it has to offer. I can't say enough about the Gnome House; its location, amenities, and hosts are simply amazing!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

What a spectacular weekend we just had! This has been one of the greatest times my girlfriend, Meesa, our dog, Ponca and I have had in a long time. When we first saw this place on your website, we knew we had to visit, but it was so much more charming and enchanting than we imagined it could be. I'm blown away by all the great details and woodwork of this home, it's every bit THE DREAM GETAWAY SPOT we've been searching for, we will definitely be back many more times and we can't wait to share our memories with all our friends! The hot tub was a grreat added bonus to gaze at the star-filled sky...we saw the longest shooting star we'd ever seen our first night here out there. You have a wonderful piece of property and we look forward to re-visiting very soon. P.S. Thank you so much fo allowing our dog. She had a VERY good time.Did you find this review helpful? We had the most relaxing vacation ever! Loved the fabulous wood stove, amazing woodwork, and fantastic jacuzzi. With four adults and two babies under a year, we still feel relaxed and refreshed. Today, 26th, we are dragging our feet; not wanting to go back to the city. What a magical setting for children and adults!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Thank you for sharing such a whimsical masterpiece with us. We spent a lot of time pondering the time, care, and knowledge that is truly mind-inspiring. The Gnome House is a lovely piece of art that is sure to withstand the test of time, and be here a hundred years from now. And thank you for sharing some of the Madrona tree with us. I have decided to carve a gnome couple, so I will always be reminded of the lovely 23rd anniversary we spent here.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

About the owner: We have lived full time on Orcas Island since 1975, raising three sons, who are now married with children who love to visit their grand-parents. We have been happily married for 45 years! We moved up here with a down payment and no jobs and over the years have done many things. We have worked, farmed, been in construction, operated heavy equipment, coached Little League for all three sons, participated in countless community activities, volunteered at the school, run two successful gift and clothing shops, designed and built several buildings including the amazing Gnome House, and remodeled our other vacation rental waterfront home, Maggie's Manor, using the outstanding design drawings of our eldest son, now an Architect. We are involved in cutting edge restoration of marine habitat and just completed a 9 weir salmon ladder and planted over 1500 plants and trees over our estuarine and riparian areas. If you have a Facebook page, visit the Deer Harbor Stewardship Project page to see some of what we have been doing. We hope you will "Like" it. We have extensive backgrounds in skiing, sailing, cycling and mountaineering. We enjoy adventures and vacations with our children and grand-children.
Why the Owner Chose Deer Harbor:
We designed and built the Gnome House as a tribute to our Scandinavian heritage, and as a tribute to the place we first met in Kitzbuhel, Austria. It began as a family guesthouse and now for the past 20 years has been an extremely popular vacation rental, perfect for family vacations, romantic getaways, honeymoons, and special occasions galore.
It is located on our 140 acre estate, near our home, and also near our other wonderful vacation rental 4 bedroom waterfront home, called Maggie's Manor. We wanted to share our Orcas Island lifestyles with visitors from all over the world. We have on-going environmental restoration activities on our 3 streams, several ponds, magnificent 20 acre estuary, and 20 acre wildfowl marsh, as well as beautiful, productive farm and forest land. It is considered the most significant environmentally diverse San Juan Islands' property by local, state and federal environmental agencies.
The beauty and tranquility of Nature inspires everyone who visits.
Orcas Island is the most popular place in Washington to get married, and is the dream vacation spot for people all over the world, and we get to live here! And when visitors leave and we say "goodbye", we always smile...not because we are happy to see them go, but rather because we are so happy that we don't have to leave this paradise!
The Unique Benefits at this Chalet:
In addition to the extraordinary beauty and serenity of Nature,so inspiring to us all, the incredible good weather in Deer Harbor is one of the main reasons for living here. Deer Harbor on beautiful Orcas Island is located in the "Rain Shadow" area of the Great Pacific Northwest enjoying only 23 inches of rain and over 260 sunny days annually. This means that we can enjoy the great outdoors all year long, hiking, biking, sailing, fishing, etc.
There have been documented over 80 species of birds frequenting the extremely vibrant freshwater marsh. There are a variety of environmental programs in progress. We work with scientists, students, and Native Americans on our restoration efforts. Our property is the site of the first white European settler on Orcas Island, Louis Cayou, who married into the Samish Nation in the mid-1800s. We are working with the Samish descendants of Cayou in our restoration efforts, and hope to have their annual Canoe Journey with about 60 canoes stop here in the future.
