2013 marked the end of our 10-year project to convert an historic barn into a beautiful residence and small event center. We took our time to do it 'right'.
Carl Gilbert Johnson and his father, Edward Johnson, built this barn in 1915 on the family's homestead. Until 1992, the barn was used in the family dairy business. On site you can still see the creamery with its foot- thick cement walls, a log cabin and numerous farm implements.
When we arrived in 1999 the barn was sagging a bit and leaning slightly, yet had a great feel about it. We put it up on a foundation and eventually decided to convert it into a 5-bedroom house with a wonderful hay loft. It took a long time to renovate, but now it is a place that many can enjoy.
Each bedroom has its own toilet/sink/shower and all bathrooms are ADA compliant. Each shower has grab bars and a granite seat. The large master shower has two shower heads!
The hay loft has an oak floor with two layers of soundproofing so that a basketball dribbled upstairs is hardly noticed downstairs.
The barn renovation includes a combination of original barn wood, warehouse wood, and just-milled, rough-sawn lumber. The baseboard throughout the barn is made of wood salvaged from the corrals that were on site. The bed frames and headboards are made with wood that was growing in the early 1800's.
From the antique decor to the handmade wood beds and the complete kitchen to the WiFi system, the barn is a pleasant combination of old and new. Throughout the barn you will notice the Hilton mattresses, pillows and sheets, the thick cotton towels, and a feeling of home. We have traveled a considerable amount in our lives. Now we want our guests to enjoy the little amenities that make a trip a pleasure and a place feel like home.
The barn is surrounded by 20 acres of pasture and trees that outline Hyalite Creek. From various spots on the property, you can see the seven mountain ranges that define the Gallatin Valley. Around the barn you will find a quarter-mile path that can be used for hiking, jogging, cross-country skiing or star watching.
Through the years we've had many craftsmen help us on this project. Almost to the last man they have said that there was something special about the barn and they enjoyed working on it. We believe that you too will feel the special something this barn offers.

Year Purchased: 1999
About the owner: Dean is a Wisconsin transplant and Kristi is a native Montanan. We met teaching school on the Blackfeet Reservation near Glacier Park near the Canadian border. We have lived in Bozeman long enough to see our children grow up through Anderson Elementary and Bozeman High Schools. Kristi likes yoga, antiques and lunch with her friends. Dean likes Model A Fords, history and cross-country skiing.
Why the Owner Chose Bozeman: When we were looking for a house with acreage, we found this property: a great outdoor space, but still relatively close to town. Instead of having a view with city lights, we found a place with a view of starlight. This is a place where you can see fox and deer and eagles; you can cross country ski or take a walk, picnic in a meadow surrounded by mountain ranges, or fish in Hyalite Creek. There are many fine places to sit and chat or take out a drawing pad and record what you see. There are many ways to enjoy the 1915 Barn and its surroundings. You will find your own.
The Unique Benefits at this Barn: When you walk into the barn you will enjoy the original 11-foot ceilings made of darkened antique wood. The warm colors used on the walls accent the antique furniture and handmade vintage barn-wood bed frames. The carefully chosen drawings, photos, and maps are decorative and informative.
An end of the 14 foot by 60 foot living/TV/game room is a garage door that is a giant 'window' to the world. The kitchen has 20 stoneware place settings and a table space for each. A modern kitchen and laundry will allow you to do things you do at home.
The entire barn has a sound system, an intercom and WiFi. We subscribe to DirecTV with over a hundred channels.
Each bedroom has a personal sound system- just plug in your mp3, iPod, or computer. Each bedroom also has a shower/toilet/sink and a sitting area. The beds have Hilton brand mattresses and headboards that are handmade from antique barn wood.
The hay loft has great acoustics and a sound system. There also is a basketball rim and a hardwood floor in the hay loft. The rounded exposed rafters let you feel the shape of the roof. From the attached deck you can see the 10,000 ft. Spanish Peaks, the Tobacco Root Mountains, Gooch Hill and the Horseshoe HIlls.
In the yard and surrounding pasture you will find part of the barn's log wall, horseshoe pits, part of the old corral, a log house, a creamery, old farm implements and a tractor. At the corner of the property is Hyalite Creek. It is a great place to collect your thoughts, catch a fish or just sit and listen to nature.
