This is a very nice place - quiet and safe part of town, but close to amenities (bakery, etc) and 15-20 minute walk to Cal-Berkeley campus. Furnishings are nice, and the owner provided breakfast fixings so it's essentially a bed and breakfast. Owner lives next door and is quiet but very friendly.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

Great place!! You could not have a more strategic location to take in the beauty that is the Elmwood District of Berkeley. The University is within walking/biking distance. The Claremont Hotel is a few blocks east, while the wonderfully scaled commercial district, on College Ave, is right around the corner. Nabolom Bakery,Mediterranean Restaurant, Elmwood Theater, Elmwood Cafe, the list is endless; yet you are far enough away(a minutes walk+/-),from all these wonderful amenities, that serenity, peace & quiet envelop this tranquil setting. A huge old redwood tree marks the unit's ground level entry.Three steps put you on the spacious entry porch. Easy well located off street parking. Once you arrive there is no need to set foot in your car again, until your trip is over. We would definitely stay here again. On top of all this the owner is a very nice guy. The place was very clean, well lit, and tastefully put together. The appliances include W/D, heaters, wifi, expresso machine, blender, microwave the list goes on. Well stocked with fairly recent New Yorker magazines as well, just in case you forgot your reading material.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

My daughter and I stayed in this flat a few months ago. We needed a quiet place to stay while in town for a family wedding at the Clairmont Hotel. We stayed 3 days, 2 nights, and had a wonderful time using the flat as our base for shopping in San Francisco, running around on College Avenue for the wedding, and walking to the hotel for the rehearsal dinner and the reception. The ad is correct—you don’t need a car to get around! The flat is perfect for 1 or 2 people, even 3 because there’s a pull out sofa bed in the small entryway “living room”. Doors separate each room from the next, allowing for quiet reading and privacy from one’s party. The kitchen is well equipped (there’s even an Espresso Maker) and I enjoyed the fresh Peet’s Coffee that James left for us in a basket with a good bottle of Wine and other treats. The flat is super cute, old and charming. It was immaculate, inviting, and a pleasure to stay there. Hotel choices in Berkeley, we found, range from awful to super expensive. This was just right for us. I promised James a review, and here it is, as I book the flat for a return visit in early 2013.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

My mom and I stayed here while visiting friends and family in the Bay Area, and it was perfect for us! It's cute, clean, quaint and so much better than a hotel. To give some perspective, the main picture shows the front (Dutch) door to the flat on the left end of the front porch, and the flat itself is arranged in a shotgun manner. The location was amazing - within very easy walking distance of College Ave (great food - Elm Wood Cafe, Shen Hua, Mediternee are fantastic; shopping, coffee, necessities, etc) and a little longer walk to Rockridge. The convertible couch/bed was as comfortable as pull out sofas can be (a little springy, but overall, fine), and the main bedroom bed was super firm, but really comfortable. Plenty of dresser and closet space, nice desk and fast Wifi to boot. The bathroom was spacious for such a small place, and the two of us had plenty of room. I could see 3-4 people staying here for a visit, if they really like each other. The kitchen was just enough, adequately stocked with flat ware, etc. James even provided a small gift basket for our arrival with treats and coffee. We ended up needing to leave a day early, and James was very accommodating. It was a great stay, and we'll certainly be back! Thanks, James!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.
