We have a wonderful monthly rental to offer you: an historic conch house has been completely redesigned and custom crafted by 2 architects as our home away from home. Featured on HGTV in 2007 (!), this intimate house boasts many fun and thoughtful features which will help make your stay in Key West special. It is located in a wonderfully private yet centrally-located neighborhood on a hidden Old Town lane. It has a lovely freeform heated pool (with built-in bench) and relaxing patio in a private backyard - complete with outdoor eating area. Swim, eat, and watch butterflies and birds under the palms....

This is a classic compact "Conch" house, typical of old Key West. This house is in a truly quiet, residential neighborhood just a few blocks to Duval Street, the boisterous hub of town. Although on the cozy side, we designed it to be light and airy and is decorated with lovely modern furnishings (Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, etc), wireless broadband internet service, living/dining/kitchen area and it even has a second comfortable living room complete with cable TV (including Netflix, HuluPlus, and Pandora radio), DVD/VCR and stereo/CD player with an iPod dock as well. Both bedrooms also feature flat panel TV's.

The house is perfect for your retreat both inside and out. Inside it's lovely with tile floors, central air, cathedral ceilings, a full, modern kitchen, 2 bedrooms plus a comfortable carpeted loft with 2 twin beds and 2 lovely tiled bathrooms - one with a creatively tiled tub/shower and the other with a tumbled marble tiled shower. All beds feature down pillows and comforters. Our home is strictly non-smoking.

We have provided everything you’ll need to make you feel right at home including a collection of movies, a fully stocked kitchen, a gas grille (with gas provided) and cooling ceiling fans in every room. Call us for current availability and rates for your stay! We will try to accommodate your needs. If you are in the market for a less expensive/ smaller place, take a look at our second place - VRBO #339927 (1 bed/bath).

All you need to bring to this lovely island is your bathing suit, a pair of shorts and flip flops and come enjoy the beauty and diversity that Key West has to offer!

Here's a quick To Do list I sent to someone recently: "So much to do here! snorkeling out in the reef (about 5 miles out) on a boat is great - can combine it with a sunset sail, parasailing is awesome - go to Smathers Beach for good early in the day deals, best beach for swimming/snorkeling is Ft. Zacharay Taylor - not perfect sand (lots of coral) but lovely place with beach chairs for hire too, great dining all over - definitely try Louie's Backyard for a splurge and get there before sunset - they have incredible decks overlooking the ocean and fabulous food (we also love El Siboney - a locals Cuban place), great shop is Fast Buck Freddie's on Duval - step above many of the stores, great place for coffee/bagels/coffee cake is The Coffee and Tea House near Southernmost end of Duval, La Te Da has fabulous high class drag shows and dinner, rent bikes for best overall experience (just lock them religiously) or rent a scooter for the day. That's for starters. Don't need to bring many clothes or fancy shoes - very casual and carribean. Flip flops work well here day and night!"
p.s. At the house we've left a couple of binders stuffed with menus and things-to-do and places-to-go while you're in town. We hope you find Key West as enchanting as we do!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

My husband and I are architects and have worked in the residential design/build field for the past 15+ years building custom homes and renovating existing historic houses. I continue to practice architecture and my husband is now selling real estate, a passion of his since adolescence. We have 2 wonderful children and look forward to spending more time in Key West once they are off to college. We spent a year in our Key West house with our kids (and my mother-in-law)our wolf hound and our cat while the kids went to the local schools. We loved getting to know the town from a local's perspective. It's a town with a terrific arts community and talented musicians of all sorts.

Why the Owner Chose Private Homes, Old Town

We fell in love with Key West the first time we visited. We stayed out on 'the strip' (large hotels) on that visit but spent much of our time wandering the streets of old town and started to look for a house to buy. We knew that the town's funky flavor, intimacy and relaxed feel was unique and it just spoke to us. The locals treated us well from that very first visit and we felt at home immediately. We love to bike and walk and the town is made for walking! Everything you need is within 1/2 mile it seems, and the architecture enchanted us more and more as we wandered the lovely streets and alleys. We had spent much time in and around New York City growing up, so the grid layout of the town was easily understandable and within a day we could find our way around. We felt at ease here and found so much to see and do while also giving us the space to relax and take in the beautiful ocean surrounding the island with it's incredible crystal turquoise waters!

The Unique Benefits of this House

Our house is in a perfect location - no kidding. - it's within a few blocks of the tourist hub of town and is an easy 10 minute walk or bike ride from everything you could possibly want. There's a library within 4 blocks, tons of restaurants and shops, a great Cuban coffee place about 6 blocks away, art galleries, small supermarkets and the best beach in town is about a mile away. We still can't believe that we found such a location. And, it's private and on a lane that many people can't find - perfect for a getaway. We also put in a lovely curved pool which creates an oasis under our coconut palm for those lazy afternoons or dinner on the patio. We created a home that will be perfect for your visit and hope that it entices you to stay again and again, as it does for us. We ask that you respect the quiet that you will find around you; this is an established full time resident kind of neighborhood, so we want to make sure that our renters fit right in and feel at home.

However, it is in close proximity to the busy, fun main street with shops, galleries, bars and restaurants - Duval Street. We had a delightful time at Casa Dulce and would return, but we fell in love with Key West and bought our own house there!

and there are two bathrooms. The master bath has a wonderful shower with a stone floor. There is a loft upstairs with two beds and it is perfectly fine for sleeping. The kitchen is well appointed with everything one basically needs for cooking and there is a grill outside. Casa Dulce is in a very nice neighborhood and it was a pleasure to walk all around it taking in so many beautiful houses. There is a little dog park very close to the house. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful.

Our stay at Casa Dulce was sweet indeed. The house is just lovely. It is decorated with taste and warmth. It doesn't feel like a rental. It feels like the kind of place you wish you lived in! There is a nice room in front with a desk that is separated by a long hallway from the living room and kitchen which face the yard and pool. So, two people can be in the house and be very separated if there is a need for work privacy, etc. The bedrooms are cute and comfortable and ...(continued next review)

Beauty & Efficiency come together in this Key West home

Date of Stay: 04/23/11 Review Submitted: 05/13/11

This is a wonderful house. It reminds me of a ship, a yacht, with everything perfectly placed for both efficiency and beauty. There are two bedrooms downstairs, and an attic-like space upstairs which is perfect for teenagers and children, who have the feeling that they are in a hideout, a treehouse, with windows looking down on the adults. There are two separate rooms downstairs for gatherings, one in front and one overlooking the pool and garden in back. This enables some of you to be watching a movie while others are talking or just relaxing. The neighborhood is really local, quiet and private. And if you have a dog, there is a great little park just down the lane where locals bring their dogs each morning and evening. The house is walking or biking distance from Duval Street, Schooner Wharf and the waterfront, and all of Key West's excitement. I loved this house.

Perfect location, beautifully decorated

Guest: Barbara and Stan (New York)
Date of Stay: 02/01/11 Review Submitted: 03/27/11

We stayed for the month of February and found the house to be in a perfect location. We could walk to almost everywhere in Old Town: Duval Street, Higg's Beach, fine and funky restaurants, White Street pier for sunrise, the docks, and Mallory Square for sunsets. The pool and yard are a tremendous plus. The house is beautifully decorated and has everything you would need for a short or long stay. You'll love it!

Owner response:Thank you for the compliments on the decor and house generally. Every time I come down to stay at the house I marvel at how lucky we are to have such a great place in such a GREAT location. The pool and small deck area is also fabulous. I totally agree with Barbara and Stan, and I thank them for their terrific review. I am here right now, and have just added Netflix and HuluPlus to the cable TV offerings in case you are a big TV or movie fan.

We are warm season visitors to Key West. We spend the hot summers here and head for Central America for the high season. We love Key West and fortune let us find this home. It is 3 blocks from the main tourist area and a half mile from everything else. Military and retired military will find the VA Hospital, Commissary and Exchange can help extend your stay in Key West. The house can sleep 6 comfortably with 2 doubles and a two twins upstairs for shorter stays or visiting kids the fold out sofas could add a few more if privacy is not an issue. The kids will love the attic room with the 2 twin beds and window that appears to have once been an exterior window which opens up to one of the 2 living areas. The house was very clean and if you are fortunate enough to stay here I think you will find it the same. If you like to cook you will find everything at least adequate, and certainly better than most vacation rentals. Read up on the Advantium 120 oven before your vacation. It is not just a microwave and convections oven but also cooks with light very rapidly if you wish to use the feature. We had one in our last home and were Giddy when we found one here. There is also a small but good quality propane grill in the back next to the dipping pool. Our favorite Restaurant is Salsa Loca. We love the 3 dollar Margaritas available all day there and not just because to of the price. They are dog friendly too as are the more famous places that you must go to at least once like Margaritaville and the Cheeseburger of Cheesburger in Paradise fame. And nobody should miss number 9 on the Travel Channel's world's best beach bars Sloppy Joes with their live music that runs till 4AM Sunday morning and picks up Again at 8. I love that they mentioned that Sloppy's wins a spot on the World's best beach bars even though it is not on a beach. It is just that good and just a long stroll or a short bicycle ride from this property. I lived in Key West for months before I would dare describe it to anybody. I finally got it when I had gone early one morning down to the Cuban Coffee Queen(Best Cuban anywhere) to wait for a mechanic that lives in the harbor on a sailboat to come and work on my yacht in January this year. The tourists were not up yet. The locals were dinghying in from their boats, and people were walking, biking and scootering their way to work. You know every local had a shit eating grin on their face because they get to walk, bike, and scooter to work in Key West.
