My wife and I visit northern New Mexico once or twice a year and have stayed at inns and lodges in Taos, Santa Fe and several points between. We'd been wanting to have a "high-desert-solitude" experience and because we love the hot springs at Ojo Caliente we found John's and Polly's studio to be quite a "sweet spot." The studio is spacious and airy and presents dramatic views that change with the day's light. It's also well-equipped, and we made use of both the indoor wood stove and the outdoor grill on two of our four nights there (the other two we had dinner in the wine bar at the hot springs, a jewel). With our two dogs we hiked the immediate environs as well the Vista Verde trail above the Rio Grande gorge. At night the desert sky revealed stars we'd never seen before. And we spent plenty of time on the patio with the dogs – normally excitable types who, like us, enjoyed just lying quietly in the sun, taking it all in. We'll be back.

Owner response: It is so nice to have the Studio appreciated for it's peace and quiet, proximity to the Hot Springs, great star gazing and hiking. Thank you John! We love the trails too around the Hot Springs which lead to the old Pueblo sites along the Ojo river, as well as the great hiking right out the front door of the Studio into the Carson National Forest and Mesa Vibora to the West. Thank you for being such considerate guests and for taking such good care of the place. We look forward to your next visit!

We just spent 4 days on a working retreat at the Studio in Ojo Caliente, inspired by the peace and quiet, magnificent views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, sun and beauty inside and outside of the adobe walls. The studio is a perfect get-away if you are looking for peace, comfort, ease. The kitchen is very well stocked, everything is simple, clean and convenient, creating the space for relaxing, creating, reflecting, contemplating, insight, restoration. The excellent Hot Springs resort is a short drive from the property and we had a truly outstanding dinner at the resort restaurant. We also walked out along one of the several long dirt roads, taking in the 360% views and magnitude of the horizons of northern NM. The Studio is an excellent and convenient, place from which to explore both the near by high desert plateau and comforting hot springs as well as to ski at the Taos Ski Valley, a short hour's drive from the property. I highly recommend the property, the location and the owners. Enjoy!

It's wonderful when people like you take advantage of the great opportunities the Studio and it's environs offer, such as the break from internet and cell phones, the National Forest and the Hot Springs. We're so glad you had a productive retreat and hope you find time to return again soon. Cheers! John and Polly

My husband and I needed a place away from the city we live in and this was the perfect place. It was so quiet with beautiful landscapes, we were sad when we had to leave. The owners John and Polly had a nice note waiting for us and were always available if we had any questions. The house was perfect with its open floor plan, two warm beds, huge windows and welcoming atmosphere. As we expected the house was clean and orderly with all of our needs met. No cell, TV or internet was an added bonus to get away from it all. We are definitely coming back here.

Owner response: Emily and Frank are such perfect guests and really get what the Studio is all about: peace and quiet and a get-away from the hustle and bustle of a busy modern life. Taking a break from TV, Internet and Cell Phones seems hard at first, but Polly and I feel so refreshed after a few days here. We hope Emily and Frank return and see what it's like this Spring or Summer. Thank you again!

We've been to Ojo Caliente before, but wanted a place away from the bustle of the resort. This property fit the bill perfectly. Close enough to leave the springs for a quick trip back for food and refreshments before heading to the springs again. Also, not far from Bandelier National Monument for some great hiking. We loved the views, the light, the kitchen, the porches, and the beds. We plan on returning!

We spent 5 nights/4 full days at the studio and enjoyed every minute. With no cell phone service, internet, or TV, my daughter was somewhat lost at first, not knowing what to do with herself. However, with no bedroom to hide herself away in, and the open layout of the house lending itself to interaction, that quickly changed. We found ourselves playing board games, using the telescope to look out the large picture window, (the only wildlife we spotted were cows...but it was still fun!), reading, and enjoying the quiet. I actually took a real, undisturbed, nap for the first time in a very long time! This is a wonderful get-away for anyone looking for peace and quiet.

Owner response: Thanks Jerry! Its nice to have positive feedback about the Studio's absence of cell phone service, internet and TV. We're glad you and your clan appreciate the Studio's "Gadget Break". The three eclipses over the past two weeks (including Venus's Transposition) have been a real Northern NM astronomical treat too. We'll try to have some Elk and Deer ramble by along with the local cattle herd. Cheers and please come again!

A complatative environment that lends itself well to rest, thought, and renewal. We loved the stunning views of Mesa Vibora, Black Mesa, and Penderal. The initial shock of no cell phone service, no Internet and no TV quickly (well maybe not quickly) changed to a different way of spending time that was simply wonderful. quick note: driving less that one mile to mile marker 358 will get you a hot spot of cell phone service. The owner does provide a land phone line which worked just great. I had not used a land line in a long time. I am proof one can live without CNN for a week. Very clean, very comfortable and. Can't wait to return.

This is a wonderfull place to stay especially if you have an extra few days because there are so many sights and things to do in any direction. My wife and I spent time in Taos, Santa Fe (be sure to go to the farmers market on Saturday), and Abiquiu areas. The Casita has great mountain views to the east and south. and there is privacy and an air of peacefulness that one rarely finds with most rentals. There is great high desert hiking in the adjacent Carson National Forest. We hope to come back!

My wife Beth and I took our two dogs, Arlo & Dexter, and got out of the heat and humidity of the Wisconsin summer and headed to New Mexico! There were skeptics- "going to the desert in the summer?" The Barton Studio proved to not only be a quiet retreat, but also a gateway to all kinds of fantastic day trips. A friend from Alamosa, CO came down to visit while we were there, and showed us numerous hidden gems- from Ghost Ranch to Abiqui, we were amazed at every bend in the road. Did I mention the hot springs? When a diversion was necessary, we simply took the dogs out the back door, stepped off the patio, and into what amounted to our own personal wilderness. The dogs enjoyed chasing lizards while we soaked in the solitude. Did I mention the hot springs? All in all, the Barton Studio proved to be everything it promised. While we did not have the pleasure of meeting Polly, we did meet John, and he was a most gracious host. Have I mentioned the hot springs? Location, location, location...you're a five-minute drive to Ojo Caliente, and that alone is worth the trip, but make no mistake- the combination of the solitude and austere beauty surrounding the Studio and the dwelling itself enhances the whole experience. They don't call it the land of enchantment for nothing!

The best part of our stay at this lovely studio was watching the afternoon rain move in, along with spectacular lightning! While we were never able to find a sufficiently clear window to use the telescope, we were able to see the night sky for a short time. The stars out this way are a sight to behold (can see the Milky Way). So close to Ojo, too. Our dog enjoyed exploring the National Forest around the property as well. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Spending five days at the studio was a most welcome break from work and the city for my husband, the dogs and me. The setting is just enough off-the-beaten path to provide for quiet star gazing and a sense of privacy, yet close enough to Taos and Santa Fe for easy day trips to the galleries, shopping and dining. The studio itself is beautifully designed, open and airy, with gorgeous views out of every window. The open, single room design with high ceilings creates a freeing, yet cozy retreat. We felt instantly relaxed and had to tear ourselves away when we had to leave. The owners are great, they were so accommodating and welcoming, and we truly felt we were guests in their home. Our two dogs loved running around the area, flushing birds out of the sage and juniper, and we all enjoyed leisurely walks in between reading and just relaxing in this wonderful space. A terrific find for those looking to relax, breathe and escape from TV and the internet. We hope to make the Ojo studio an annual destination!
