Better than Tuscany
Better than Tuscany
We arrived in the village of Poggio Mirteto and found a warm, friendly, fun place where we could immerse ourselves in the local scene for several weeks. It is situated on a hill ('Poggio') like all ancient towns used to be, for safety. Though legend has it that the local Sabine women found those marauding lads from Rome very acceptable. These days the greatest danger is from eating too much pasta from the fresh pasta shop around the corner from the apartment and too much crusty bread from the bakery next to that. We had a ball while we were there. Giorgio and Lois's apartment was ideally situated 30 metres up from the main town square where we found plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants, including Tony's Bar and the Vecchia Tipografia ristorante. In the Piazza are also two cathedrals with lots of historic art works, and at the end of the Piazza is the archway to 'old Mirteto' with its twisty little walkways looking out over the valley, charming old houses with charming old doors and crooked tiled roofs. The apartment was very comfortable and very well-equipped, and the bed was wonderful. We used to sit out on the balcony and watch the people stroll up and down one of the tree-lined main streets for their daily 'passagiata' and meet at the bar opposite for the typically Italian discussion with plenty of hand-waving, cheek-kissing and laughter. We had a car, but most of the time we wandered around the village on foot and the car just sat in the smaller Piazza d. Vetreria where the Glass Factory used to be in the 19th century. The big high factory chimney remains as a landmark which stands out around the village. Also remaining are some of the factory's beautiful old buildings with graceful brick archwork and which now hold the Peter Pan2 Pizzeria restaurant where Mario and his staff serve up great food. Poggio Mirteto is only an hour or so from Rome's frenetic lifestyle by car or by train. It's also close to the new Outlet Shopping complex at Soratte. Close-by historic towns and villages include Poggio Catino with it's medieval streets, Farfa with its Abbey and old parchment song-books, Assisi with its frescoed churches, and of course Tuscany itself with Siena, Florence and Pisa is only a few hours away. We stayed five weeks. It seemed like five days. We sometimes felt we were 'part of the family'. We recommend this holiday destination extremely highly.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, tourists without a car.
Owner response: So glad you had a wonderful time. The pleasure was ours. Those minor repairs that you mentioe have been attended to. Giorgio and I will be in Poggio in February just in time for Carivale. Oh yes and to get that dishwasher installed too. More time is needed to enjoy the wine and not washing the glasses!
A wonderful place
A wonderful place
Our stay at the flat and the town of Poggio Mirteto was very enjoyable and relaxing. The flat is nicely furnished, clean, and comfortable. Its location is ideal, about 20 meters from the very large town square with shops, restaurants, internet cafe etc. The large terrace is excellent for outside dining at home. We enjoyed La Tavernetta, Vecchia Typographi, and Dragonfly restaurants a short walk away. For coffee and pastry, we liked Jolly and Enoteca near the flat. One should have a car to explore the many beautiful hill ancient hilltop towns nearby. For day trips to Rome, buy the BIG ticket at Enoteca which is good for train, bus, and underground in Rome at 7 euros. Near the flat are the beautiful church, the Cathedral, Old Town, and excellent fresh fruit, vegetable, and butcher shops. We found the people very friendly and helpful at all times in Poggio Mirteto. If rest and relaxation in a small historic town environment yet with plenty to see and do is your desire, Poggio Mirteto and this flat are ideal.

About the owner: Canadian Lois met Italian Giorgio in Malawi, Africa where she was a volunteer. Now Lois and Giorgio run art galleries in Malawi for local artists where they spend most of their time. Travelling between Canada - Italy - Malawi has meant that Poggio has become a much loved base to spend with family and friends from all three countries.
Why the Owner Chose Poggio Mirteto:
The Losacco family home was built in the 1920's and was one of the first 'modern buildings' on the piazza. It has always been home to family members and slowly over the last decade we have been carefully updating and modernizing it. The decor is a strong & unusual reflection of a hundred years of its African connections. The Canadian side of the family have celebrated birthdays, honeymoons, and graduations here. Italians in general and our large extended family in particular always seem to be celebrating something. Oftentimes it's in the piazza - the heart and soul of every village. From fireworks to fiestas, and processions with the local brass band- if it's happening it's in the piazza! This is the best place to truely experience the essence of daily Italian life. Up at 8am for cappuccino & cornetto at the local bar (coffee bar), by 9am the shops are open and the hustle and bustle begins. By 2pm all is closed and it is time for a rest. ENJOY IT! By 4pm the shops are open until 8 when everyone disapears for the evening meal. However the day is not over as people re -emmerge for their evening stroll. The laughter and gossip, children running and playing, scotters whizzing by will carry on until the wee hours of the morning. If you're up til 3 the bakery will have the first pastries ready, fresh, hot and mouthwateringly good just before you nod off and the municiple rubbish collectors come around at 5am, whistling and clattering bottles. This is piazza life - vibrating and busy. This is all 60million Italians in an area smaller than the average US state. Oh yes and the church bells.....
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
With public transportation at your doorstep it is easy to get around and enjoy comfortably paced day trips. This area so close to Rome is remarkably undiscovered. Traditional ways of life and habits are the norm. After 20 years of spending in the region the 'Guida Turistica della Sabina' with its charming English translation was the FIRST I've found and published in 2008. It's key facts for each town include the Patron Saint. There are more than 400 scheduled Festas, Carnevales, and Sangras listed in the area and this excludes the Easter and Christmas celebrations. Music, parades, speciality foods often free or for a nominal price and hosted by each locality. There are feasts celebrating wild boar (cinghiale), gnocchi, and all kinds of local products (produtti ticipi) The village of Amatrice is famous for Bucatini alla Amatriciana and the Sagra is in August. Although the flat has a fully equipped kitchen the piazza is full of wonderful food on your doorstep
