Year Purchased: 2002
About the owner: Chuck and Barbara moved to the Outer Banks from Richmond, Virginia in 1997 and bought a 'beach box' house in Kitty Hawk. We had always wanted to live near the ocean and this was the time to make the move. We spent a year doing hands-on house renovation and we still live in the same house. Chuck is self-employed as a cabinet installer and can do just about anything related to carpentry. Barbara retired at the end of 2012 as executive director of the Outer Banks Community Foundation, an organization that awards grants to area nonprofits to help meet unmet needs in the community. We have 2 indoor cats, Xena and Gabby, and have been adopted by 3 outdoor cats that have become quite tame since we're feeding them twice a day. We are still ecstatic about our move and the fact that we can see the ocean by just looking out our windows and our feet are in the sand and water after a short walk. We love living on the Outer Banks!
Why the Owner Chose Kitty Hawk: Among the first neighbors we met after we moved to Kitty Hawk were Doc and Carolyn who had built and lived in Leaping Porpoise. We became good friends and spent many happy hours visiting with them in their home. When they moved away for health reasons we knew we wanted to buy their house. It was in the same block as our house so we knew it was a great beach location and we knew renters would love it.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: We love the peaceful neighborhood and the short walk to the uncrowded beach. We clean the property ourselves after guests leave so it's spotless for the next group.
Guests renting for a full week receive a special welcome gift--a hand painted glass ornament. Barbara's sister is an artist and creates a new design each year just for our renters so returning renters can add to their collection!
