On his third voyage to the Americas in 1498, Christopher Columbus landed here and named the island "La Asunción." A year later it was rechristened "La Margarita." The island, known as the "Pearl of the Caribbean," is situated 38 kilometers northeast of the mainland of Venezuela and far from the track of Atlantic tropical storms. Its location as an island in the Caribbean sea offers lots of beaches to explore, most of them virgin. Isla de Margarita is in many ways similar to other Caribbean destinations like Cancún, Punta Cana, and Varadero, although on a much smaller scale. However, unlike these other destinations, Margarita remains relatively undiscovered and unexplored by Americans. As part of Venezuela, it is a Spanish-speaking destination and for this reason, it attracts many visitors from Central America as well as Europe. Isla de Margarita is Venezuela's most popular tourist destination. Many come to take advantage of the island's status as a duty-free port. It is a destination for those who love the beach and spending time in the sun. It is also a popular destination for windsurfing enthusiasts.

Isla de Margarita has 167 kilometers of shoreline. The average temperature is 81° (27° Celsius) and the annual rainfall averages 27 inches resulting in mostly arid landscapes with some wooded areas and fertile valleys. You are most likely to experience some rain during the months of July and August and between November and January.

The house ("rancho") is located within the gated community of "Los Ranchos de Chana," one of first areas to be developed in the easternmost part of the island and today still considered the most exclusive development in the Isla de Margarita. The house was built in 1990 by "Chana" and is considered one of the best examples of her distinctive indigenous style. All the furnishings were handcrafted by Chana's team of artisanal laborers.

In order to ensure that your stay is as pleasant as possible, we have made available (included in the rental price) the services of our staff. They will cook and clean for you every day! Daira and Juan Carlos have been with us for over ten years.

We can also arrange to have someone meet you at the airport, help you rent a car and lead you to our Villa (about 45 minutes from the airport).

In March of the year 2010, tired of the frigid weather in New York, we made it to complete relaxation in the paradisiacal setting of Los Ranchos de Chana off the Venezuelan mainland. A quick car trip from the airport took us to the well-protected, secluded private setting nestled on the side of a hill overlooking the Caribbean Gulf where one soon conjured the 17th-century Dutch privateers who tried to make the island their own. The nearby remnant of a gigantic fort is a perfect reminder of those Spanish-Dutch battles for hegemony. Today, Rancho Casares is a hospitable oasis of peace in a luscious tropical setting where the main open living room at the bottom of the multilayered residence provides the perfect setting for the many things we don't get to do during our workaholic lives. An hourly dip in the swimming pool fortified my physique and prepared me for many a social dinner during the balmy evenings. From there it was just a few outdoor steps to the higher-up terrace with its corridor of private bedrooms with spectacular views. The temptation was to sleep in one of the many hammocks but, being New Yorkers, we retired to the air-conditioned sleeping rooms. The nearby beach is wide and peaceful and the surf soothes ones tired muscles in perfectly clear tepid water. Food and service was top notch. We came back to New York totally energized, mentally and physically, for another year of hard work. What is Rancho Casares' theme? RELAXATION!

Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Friends of friends told me about Rancho Casares. It is a beautifully proportioned, terraced property on the eastern side of the island. For those of us who enjoy the morning sun, this is your spot. Its especially large entertainment area is bordered on two sides by broad corridors accommodating graceful, vintage hammocks, and the owners have taken care to supply the house with the work of local artisans. Rancho Casares is known for its emphasis on local, grilled fish and organic poultry. The green-shouldered tomatoes grown on the island are incomparable. As the island is a free port, one is availed of an array of imported cheeses and wine. Should you venture to one of the local beaches, you need not budge from your chosen place in the sand. Your lunch will be served to you on tables set up with real cutlery and cloth!.

My wife and I wanted to get away to the sun for a week and had heard about Rancho Casares through mutual friends. Every March we take a week off and go to the Caribbean. We have been to Barbados, Anguilla, and St. Maarten. We had heard that the coast off of Venezuela is as beautiful, though considerably less expensive. And, importantly, we had heard you eat very well on the island, which is definitely not case with many of the other islands we have been to. It turned out to be all true! What I most liked about staying at Rancho Casares is that you don't have to lift a finger. It's like having your own private bungalow at a hotel, but in this case you can invite your friends. The meals were without exception delicious and made with the most exquisite ingredients - all locally produced vegetables and fruit, and locally caught fish. (You would be surprised to know how many of the Caribbean islands must import most of their food.) The service in the house was impeccable. We sometimes would have lunch at a restaurant in one of the surrounding beaches. I recommend "Biblos" on playa Parguito, 10 minutes by car from Rancho Casares. The seafood is delicious and I enjoyed the kitsch Mesopotamian decor!

Loved visiting Rancho Casares last year with my husband. It was the first time visiting Venezuela and the first time to Isla Margarita. We were lucky to learn of this beautiful Island through friends who had previously been to Rancho Casares. We decided to rent this beautifully situated house overlooking the magnificent ocean. The gardens are luscious, kept with loving care by the butler / gardner, Juan Carlos. His wife, Daira, is the skilled chef. Every meal was a delicious treat. Daira would prepare the food using only local fish, meats and vegetables. The dining table was beautifully set every night. Service was impeccable. On some days we would have lunch on one of the many small huts that line the beaches. We would sit in our chairs on the beach and the food would be brought to us. Food was simple but always delicious. On the beaches one also would find lovely items to buy from the local traveling vendors. Its a great place to go for a perfect island vacation!!!

About the owner: We live in New York City. My husband is a lawyer and I am a housewife.

Why the Owner Chose Ranchos de Chana:
I am Nicaraguan and wanted a place in a Spanish speaking country. I have many friends from Venezuela and fell in love with the island of Margarita when i visited it many years ago. We bought the house just after renowned artisan/architect Chana began building "Los Ranchos." We loved fact that "Los Ranchos" is in a secluded part of the island, away from the tourists of Porlamar. We also liked the rustic and artisanal quality of the homes Chana was building. We bought one of the last ones.

The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Our life in NYC is very fast-paced and relentless. So, when we go to Margarita, we like to relax and do nothing. We have a staff that has been with us for over 10 years and they take care of us. We entertain often in our home and have been told that we have the best cook on the island! Rancho Casares - our home - is only a few minutes drive to the most beautiful beaches on the island. We often go to Playa del Agua in the late morning and have lunch on the beach and stay until sunset. We like to spend the early evening on our hammocks reading and listening to Opera, resting before dinner. Our butler serves the best rum cocktails on the island!
