Cliff House, Dramatic Oceanfront on a Wild Sonoma Coast Cove

The Cliff House in Timber Cove offers a dramatic and romantic experience you will savor for a lifetime. Intimate enough for the honeymoon of your dreams yet is very comfortable for two couples to enjoy. This is a rare opportunity to vacation in a true Californian archiectural masterpiece constructed entirely of redwood, stone and glass. The Cliff House is nestled into a bluff overlooking a rugged ocean cove. View dolphins, harbor seals and whales from the flying bridge jetting out sixty feet above the crashing surf.
Snuggle up next to the soaring 16 foot stone fireplace with a glass of champagne, There is even another cozy fireplace in the fully equipped kitchen. A candle lit table with a view takes on a whole new meaning in our home. Relax and toast to your good fortune in the hot tub as the moon dances across the cove. Two beautifully appointed bedrooms with comfortable queen size beds and flat screen TVs await you after a day of exploring the Sonoma Coast, wine tasting, beach combing or simply doing absolutely nothing. Awake to the roaring surf as the mist lifts off of the rugged coastline. The smell of the surf mixes with your coffee when you curl up in the big leather chair. South facing floor to ceiling 16 foot windows allow the warm morning sunshine to fill the open and spacious living area. Don't be surprised if a pelican is sitting on the deck waiting to greet you. Hawks, eagles and sea birds preform aerial ballets while ospreys dive into the surf emerging with the catch of the day. The Cliff House sits on a private one acre forested lot. It is the perfect place to unplug, rejuvenate and reconnect with eachother. Turn on the music, pour a glass of wine and finally open that book you've been meaning to get lost in.
You don't have to take just our word for how spectacular this location and house are. Ansel Adams photographed our cove on one of his frequent visits to Timber Cove. The architect of the Cliff House is the very talented Gary Tucker. He did his apprenticeship under Frank Lloyd Wright. The house has been featured in 'Better Homes & Gardens', San Francisco Examiner, San Rafael Independent Journal, Architectural Record and Redwood News.
The North Coast also offers a wide variety of activities if you wish to get out and explore. Golf, kayaking, diving, wine tasting tours, fishing, hiking and parks filled with redwoods are a short drive away. The Timber Cove Inn can be seen from the deck. You can enjoy live music and fine dining there. We often call the Timber Cove Inn and order take out when we just want to take it easy. We love going to the local farmer's market on Sunday mornings. We buy delicious breads and freshly made cheese and take a drive through the redwoods on the back roads before heading back to our retreat.
You should be aware that the house is two-stories. The nearest town with full service grocery stores is Gualala about 25 minutes north. We are not kidding when we say unplug. There is no cell phone service at the Cliff House but we do provide phones with free local and long distance calling. If you must bring a laptop, we do have basic internet service. There is DirecTV on all three televisions, a DVD player, CD player with lots of CDs, an IPod dock, board games and jigsaw puzzles for your enjoyment. If cooking is your thing, we have provided just about everything you need, spices, oils, pots, pans, coffee maker, toaster, microwave and a dishwasher for easy clean-up.
Please feel free to contact us to request more information or have any special requests. We will be happy to email you additonal photos, maps and details. This place is too special to keep just to ourselves and we'd be very pleased to share it with you. Call us today!

We had the pleasure of staying at the gorgeous Cliff house for an amazing 2 nights. It is truly everything that everyone says it is, and worth the splurge. We spent the majority of the time on the deck, watching 'the phantom', a harbor seal, watching us. The hot tub was ready to go and we took full advantage of that. The floating bridge is fun and a little scary to walk out on! It also provides more privacy when in the jacuzzi! We were greated by a number of deer both mornings outside the deck of the bedroom. Everything was so easy to use and very clean. We loved the music selection as well. The bed was a little bit firm for us, but we always feel that wasy so I'm sure it's perfect for most people. As far as restaurants, we enjoyed a breakfast and a dinner at Timber Cove. Sea Ranch Inn was also very nice for dinner and not too far. Driving south to Rivers End for dinner is a little too far and the road is definitely more winding. Not a great idea for us after wine in the jacuzzi! Don't miss the Sea Ranch Chapel and hiking at Salt Point State Park. We can't wait to return!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

I will join the other reviewers in trying to explain just how beautiful, perfect & amazing this house is, but words can't describe it. You have to "experience" the house and all that it offers. My 4 nights there were some of the most memorable in my life. If you're thinking of this area for your travels, stay no where else, you've found it. First off, here's some necessary info about the house before I try to share the "experience" of it. Diane will make your reservation with ease, provide you with any info needed and is a pleasure to work with...she starts off your "experience" very nicely. Upon your arrival, you will not "miss" anything, as it's provided. You'll enjoy a full compliment of kitchen wares, a great master bath with wonderful towels and toiletries, a very comfy bed, living room "toys" (stereo, tv, books, telescope, etc)...it has it all. (even though I never turned the tv on) But the "experience" of being there is hard to explain. The house is beautiful to begin with and you know right away, you're in a special place. The views are better than the pictures/video...being there is incredible. The smell of the fresh ocean air, the sounds of the water on the rocks just below your deck, morning Mimosa's in the hot tub while you watch the fog lift, watching the seals nap on the rocks below the skybridge, blue water & sky... But that's only part of the "experience". Sit back and take time to enjoy the panarama, which is constantly moving & changing. My wife & I spent the entire last day on the deck, early till late, and to this day, I'm not sure how that day went by so quickly! You'll enjoy the Timber Cove Inn restaurant and their outdoor fire pit on the cliff, which gives you a nice view of the Cliff House. You will enjoy making new acquaintances by their fire pit, but you will catch yourself looking at the Cliff House and before you know it, you're back in front of "your" fire place or on "your" deck looking at the stars. Also, part of the "experience" is exploring the Timber Cove area, Jenner and the Stewart's Point General Store and of course Healdsburg, home of Seghesio Winery...my opinion, "the" best zin. Cliff House owners, Chris & Diane, give you permission to enjoy their house too, through the instructions they've given you at the house. It's a refreshing change and quite nice that they make you feel that comfortable in their house. Chris & Diane say, "they are stewards of a very special place"...indeed they are.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.

If I could give the Cliff House more than 5 stars, I would. It is spectacular. The views are beautiful, the house is spotless, and the hot tub is warm and wonderful. Diane and Chris, the owners, have gone out of their way to make guests comfortable. Upon arrival, a chilled bottle of champagne awaits. The kitchen is stocked with so many extras to make cooking a joy: a variety of pans, a nice set of dishes and glassware, double ovens and even a spice rack! There are games to play by the fire, binoculars to observe the wildlife, and maps to use to enjoy the area. The process of booking the Cliff House was very easy. The owners are very friendly and responsive. We loved our stay so much that we are already planning our next visit!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We had a wonderful 2 days at this property and loved it. The setting is unbelievable. You are basically hanging over the ocean. The setting is super private, quiet and you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. While there are neighbors, nobody is close by, just across the little cove. The master bedroom has the better view as it looks out across the great room to the ocean, but it is also open to this space. It also has a private deck and more light. The second bedroom has more privacy but is much darker as there is just one small window. We loved being there by ourselves and using the master bedroom without any privacy issues. The kitchen is incredibly well appointed - we've never rented somewhere that had everything we needed and we cooked all our meals here. Nearest grocery is about 30 minutes away in Gualla so stop there first if coming from the north. They even had a crockpot! The only thing missing is a grill, but we didn't mind. It's the best organized house we've ever rented too...and this is coming from a professional organizer. Switches are all labeled so there is less hunting for things. Everything is in it's place and we appreciated it. We had to literally pull ourselves out of there to leave. All in all a fabulous trip and we hope we can get back there some day.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

My husband and I just left Cliff House and I must tell you he almost had to drag me to the car kicking and screaming. Our time at the Cliff House was extraordinary because it is, quite simply, an extraordinary place with extraordinary owners. Absolutely nothing is necessary to enhance the view and the location but this amazing house itself does that and more. The dramatic remote setting on the cliff, the enduring sound of crashing waves, the glorious night sky peppered with stars like you've never seen them all remind you that you are in a very special place. And then, Chris and Diane make certain you will be more than comfortable with wonderful linens, toiletries, coffee, pasta, champagne, and other essentials. Everything we could have possibly needed to cook with was there (we stocked up at Trader Joe's but there are some small stores in the area). They have movies and books and puzzles and games, a telescope and binoculars for scoping out the seal lions and fishing boats. The hot tub overlooking the ocean was heavenly - perfect for long conversations about how we would never, ever, ever get tired of being in this place. Even the mster bath shower was incredible as well - while there is no way we could replicate the setting of Cliff House, we have already ordered the rain shower system - maybe if we close our eyes we can imagine we are back in California????? We did visit a few parks and we also went to the Timber Cove Inn twice - once for the wine tasting and once for dinner. We enjoyed both very much but found ourselves antsy to get back to the house during our outings. Go - just GO and you will understand exactly what we are talking about. Thank you, Chris and Diane - it was wonderful.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

This home is an architectural masterpiece with dramatic coastal views complete with cantilever walkway. We searched hundreds of homes on line over many months and knew The Cliff House would be perfect the minute we came across the listing, laughing with excitement as we considered our good fortune. The home and its location are perfect whether returning after a day of exploring or for simply staying home all day to refresh mind and body. The Jacuzzi hot tub on the deck provided the ultimate in relaxation and we used it to enjoy coffee in the morning and to look at the stars before retiring for the night. It could not be in a better location on the cove. Winds blowing 40-50 mph at Timber Cove Inn only a mile away were non-existent at the home’s sheltered location. Having to dress in many layers at Salt Point Park to explore the ocean trails just a few miles away, we were very excited to find upon returning that we could sit comfortably on the deck in shorts and soak in the sun. From the deck’s great vantage point, we were able to watch seagulls (two which seemingly stood guard on the ends of the flying bridge) turkey vultures, pelicans, and other birds, seals and whales. The pièce de résistance included a new born seal pup we watched for hours on our last day, only to be outdone by a gray whale and her calf which came right into the cove for several minutes before disappearing around the bend. We could not have scripted a better location or home to enjoy our honeymoon and will treasure the many memories we made at The Cliff House. My husband and I rented the Cliff House for our wedding anniversary. We wanted a romantic getaway weekend on the ocean and that's exactly what we got. The house was beautiful and clean and the views were breathtaking. It was so relaxing to sit and listen to the sound of the waves crashing literallly outside the house! We will definitely be coming back hopefully before our next anniversary!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

What a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the coast. We spent a few days last year near the Bodega Coast and wanted to try farther north and boy did we choose the right spot. Great View, gorgeous home, and wonderful owners who I felt as if I had known them all my life. The weather was great and only had one day of rainy wet weather but that did not matter because we stayed in and enjoyed the view of the ocean and the waves knocking against the rocks. We also had two seals who came up each day and rested upon the rocks outside of the home as long as the tide did not cover up their rocks. Diane and Chris have found a wonderful dream home and we felt very honored to be able to use their home for our relaxing trip. It is stocked with almost everything you might think of and then some. I would highly recommend anyone who wants to feel like you are sitting out over the top of the ocean and have a peaceful and beautiful view to choose this home. You will not be disappointed. Thanks Diane and Chris for sharing your home. You are very lucky.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers.

My husband and I, together with our adult son and his girlfriend stayed at Cliff House for just 2 nights. It didn't take us long to realize that we should have booked for longer. This has to rate as one of the best getaway locations that we have experienced. The location is exactly as portrayed in the photographs on this site, but what they cannot convey is how peaceful and relaxing it is. The views over the ocean are spectacular from the jacuzzi and from the flying bridge. We saw 2 spectacular sunrises from our bed in the main bedroom. The Annapolis winery - about 30 minutes away - is a really good place to visit for a tasting. We also found the Timber Cove Inn for dinner and the Sea Ranch for lunch to be good places to go. However, the "home-cooked" meal at Cliff House overlooking the Pacific and listening to the waves was probably the best. Chris and Diane have ensured that the house is well equipped and that all the required information is readily to hand. They were a pleasure to deal with in all aspects of the rental process. As mentioned elsewhere, our deposit was returned promptly a few days after the end of rental period. We will certainly be looking to return here in the future and have recommended it to several friends. Thank you Chris and Diane for making your home available.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

The Cliff House is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beautiful coast of Sonoma County. Diane and Chris (owners) are great and have everything organized that made our stay hassle-free. The house is a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired design and has amazing architectural elements throughout. Highly recommend Salt Point State Park nearby for light hiking and viewing the Sandstone formations along the coast. Looking forward to my next stay.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

About the owner: Hi, we are Chris and Diane. We are native Californians and currently living in Cardiff by the Sea in North San Diego County. We discovered Timber Cove while we were still attending Long Beach State 36 years ago. Chris teaches cabinetmaking & furniture building at a community college and Diane's background is in real estate. We have traveled throughout Europe, China and Japan studying woodworking, architecture, and timber framing. We are life members of the Timber Framer's Guild. Now we have come full circle back to Timber Cove convenced that it is one of the most beautiful spots on earth! We enjoy working on projects together and are excited to leave our mark on the Cliff House without spoiling its original splendor. In addition to woodworking, we are car enthusiasts. We love entering local Show & Shine car shows. We often compete against each other which makes for some interesting drives home. Chris has restored his grandfather's 1929 Model A and loves driving twisty roads in his Lotus. You can often spot Diane cruising down Hwy 101 in her 1954 Packard Pacific.
Why the Owner Chose Jenner:
We have been tent camping on our lot in Timber Cove within view of the Cliff House for over 30 years. In February of 2011 we finally threw out the tent and bought the house of our dreams, the Cliff House. We plan to retire there in a few years so in the meantime we want to share this magical place with others who can appreciate its unique beauty. In less than 2 hours from San Francisco you can be surrounded by redwoods, exploring rocky coasts, tasting incredible local wines, or just watch the sunset while soaking in our hot tub. When we go up, we have a long list of books to read and things to do around the house. Those things are quickly forgotten once we walk through the door. The view is so mesmerizing all we can do is give up and open a bottle of wine.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Spectacular views and nature set the Cliff House apart from all other properties. Crashing white water surf as far down the coast as the eye can see. Bodega Bay off to the south. The horizon is so vast that the earth's curvature is visable. The house is beautiful during the warm sunny days but its true character comes out during the storms. Crashing waves put on a show that rivals a 4th of July fireworks display! After the storm passes you can see waterfalls and rainbows flowing into the ocean from bed. Greet seals as they soak up the sun on the rocks under the flying bridge. In the spring they show off their babies in the cove. Spot whales from the kitchen window while finishing up the dishes. Toast to the moon as it spreads diamonds across the ocean while you are in the hot tub. You will feel perfectly safe and at ease as all of this wild and rugged nature is quietly tamed by the solid, oversized wooden beams, giant rock walls, a huge fireplace and the bold architecture of the house. Once you arrive we think that there is a good chance that you might agree that the descriptions in this listing are actually understated.
